Sweat-soaked man in Sengkang looks like WP MP Jamus Lim doing solo walkabout with no fanfare​

A photo of a lone sweat-soaked man walking past 316B Anchorvale Link in Sengkang was put up on Facebook on June 4, 2021, which generated interest as the person was identified as Workers' Party MP Jamus Lim.

A member of the public who took the photo claimed it was Lim going about his duties.

Her post's caption read:


Lim is currently the MP for the Anchorvale ward in Sengkang.

The photo was believed to have been taken on the first Friday of June, when temperatures in Singapore soared to a high of 34°C during the day.

What photo showed

Based on what can be seen from the photo, the man's face could not be identified as it showed his back view, while his gait and hair style could barely be made out from a distance.

However, the man's grey shirt that appeared drenched with a big dark grey patch of his perspiration bore an uncanny resemblance to a previous image of Lim, when he personally revealed the unglamorous side of politics while on his regular walkabouts before he was elected:

Wins praise​

The photo of the grey shirt man was originally put up by Dania Nasuha, and shared again by at least two other Facebook pages, where they were reshared at least a few thousand times in total.

Responses to the photo of Lim making the rounds on his own in the estate without minders elicited praise.

Multiple comments on Facebook said Lim's approach was praiseworthy, as what he was doing could have well gone undocumented if not for this chance occurrence of him being recognised and photographed for posterity.

But some commenters did doubt whether it was indeed Lim who was photographed.

As of the wee hours of June 6, Lim, a savvy social media user, has not address the fanfare over the supposed sighting of him.

However, he did mention on May 23, in the midst of the Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) period, that the estate walk activity is still permissible, but those carried out will be a "scaled-down version".


That week's walk was accompanied by litter-clearing in the estate, where Lim was seen participating in the hands-on activity.

Lim's preferred apparel: Polo shirts​

Lim was also previously seen a few times before in a similar-looking grey polo shirt.

On many of his house visits, he would turn up in a different coloured polo shirt each time.

It's a very good reflection on the good work that Jamus and WP are doing on the ground, that multiple articles are written about this.

The weather in the past few weeks has been sweltering, and the heat and humidity is going to continue in Jun.

Many Singaporeans are content to hide from the heat while working from home. But a Member of Parliament’s (MP’s) work involves being involved in the day-to-day affairs of estates under their care.

This makes it necessary for them to actively walk around the estate – a potentially uncomfortable task if you’re sensitive to the heat.

So when a netizen posted a photo of a man walking alone around Anchorvale and identified it as MP Jamus Lim, netizens quickly noted that he was soaked in sweat.

Many praised him for his dedication despite the heat, and also noted that he wasn’t assisted by anyone in his rounds.

OP identifies man in photo as MP Jamus Lim​

The photo was posted on Friday (4 Jun) in Facebook group Void Deck Kakis.

From the block signage, we can see that it was taken outside Block 316B, Anchorvale Link in Sengkang.

While the man in the photo can only be seen from the back, the OP – a Ms Dania Nasuha – identified him as Dr Jamus Lim, who’s MP for the Anchorvale ward in Sengkang.

She also marveled at how Dr Lim was doing his rounds without any entourage.

Shirt soaked with sweat​

Netizens were quick to point out that the man’s whole body was sweating.

That could be inferred from the huge dark patch on his grey shirt that covered almost his entire back.

Given the crazy hot weather we’ve been having, any person walking out in the open in the middle of the day would be perspiring like mad.

The sight of his sweaty shirt managed to touch at least one netizen.

Making an effort when nobody is watching​

Others picked up on the fact that he was seen alone in the photo, without an entourage or photographers to take photos of him.

One netizen, possibly referencing a quote attributed to coach and inspiration author John Wooden, said the effort made when nobody is watching is what matters.

Thus, if indeed the man is Dr Lim, he seems to have gained some respect from this photo.

In Jun 2020, before being elected as Sengkang MP, he posted a photo of his sweaty shirt while doing house visits.

While gross, that photo of a sweaty shirt illustrates the hard work that goes into campaigning for a chance to serve the people.

As such, being an MP definitely isn’t a glamourous or cushy job.

He wears polo T-shirts often​

Although Dr Lim hasn’t mentioned anything about the photo on his social media, a glance at his Facebook page shows that he does prefer a simple ensemble of polo T-shirt and pants when carrying out his MP duties.

Scaled-down estate walks conducted during tighter restrictions​

Although house visits have been suspended due to the Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) restrictions, Dr Lim still performs a “scaled-down version” of an estate walk.


He said this on Facebook on 23 May, adding that that week’s estate walk included some litter clearing due to it being #CleanSG month.

And this time, he did post a photo of himself clearing up some rubbish.
