Why GOV suddenly want to revised COE quota UP?

I think LTA need more money for $1.1b bus subsidy, $900 million MRT upgrade and there others cost eg. expansion of MRT line all need money.

There are political costs involved in having COE prices too high. Govt have to bring it down somehow.

There no way to bring it down is open bidding. As long there consumer willing to pay. The price remain high.
How big is the effect extra maybe 100~500 car/bid will make a different. Now having car is a must/1st priority rather than have HDB in younger generation. Just see on weekend in CP full of car all idle not going anywhere.
Price will be remain high will extra few hundred COE/month.
Maybe should up the CP rate 3 times. That will slove the car problem even idle still have to pay. Then consumer will think twice before buy. Only those always on the road will buy. Those just parking most of the time will not buy. No need to increase COE quota. In the end create any bigger problem>> road congested/parking space/more accident...............
I support gov to increase parking rate by 3 times. Indirectly COE will down/solve car park problem.

But hor those families with 2 cars will be affected,,better if its to hammer the super rich, for those with 3 cars or more. Also increase luxury car tax for those Ferrari's etc. But also Public transport must be more efficient so many will feel there is no need for a car,,but PAP will not want that as the higher the COE the more they earn,,why would they want to damage their own rice bowl??

High COE prices are not good for everyone except govt revenue..but having too much revenue and not knowing how to circulate and get the multiplier effect is not good

If dont like the parking rate then buy landed property/condo with one free parking lot. Dont afford dont buy.

I know many people want to own a car, However with so many sardines in Spore have they given a thought on where park

I remember wasting so much time trying to find a place to park. One of many reasons I've given up on Spore. No place to park, public transport which is unreliable & packed, going out is such a pain as you can't find a seat to eat.

Why would anyone put up with such a lifestyle.

More people on the island = more vehicles on the road. And by vehicles it don't just mean privately owned cars, but also trucks, lorries, buses, bikes, taxis, vans etc.

Cut down the population to 4 million, and the congestion problem immediately eases: on the roads, inside the trains, in the malls.

A simple solution, and you don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure it out.

Political costs will stem from economic causes. Businesses are already hard-hit by rising rents and property prices. Now rising transport costs are gonna add to business costs. Does the PAP-run govt want to alienate the business owners now?

Further to the barn door analogy: having a car is like having a drug. Once you have it, you cannot not have it. Once the government try to take the car away from the masses, they will have the devil to pay. That is why Lui is talking about increasing COE supply now.
