Which is the most significant dialect group in china and is there a ranking?

...... Singlish accent is a no-no unless preparing for a fight.

singlish accent is for barfing and clearing out lunch and dinner from one's stomach. after a psychiatric visit, the shock may be mitigated. like vietnamese, it's an extremely annoying and disemboweling accent.

yet so many peasants think they are higher classed especially compared to other chinese.

even a peasant viet cringes when hearing a sinkie speak. it's ok to speak poor english for a peasant in the countryside as we expect him or her to struggle with it since it's not the mother tongue. for sinkie chinkies, they can't speak mother tongues properly, lost their true sense of phonetics, accents, nuances and pronunciations, can't speak english correctly, can't even speak an adopted tongue like mandarin accurately. truly jack of much shit but master of none. and the worst are those trying to impress and pass gas as legit english speakers in the elite ranks. street talk is one thing. official podium speech another. each time a sinkie official gets up to talk in a foreign setting, everyone in the audience except those same sinkies in his/her entourage gets up to go to the loo.....to let one go. and laugh out loud rolling on the floor.

Yes i do know of the linguistical capabilities of many a sinkee are truly lacking. Yet what pisses me off is this seeming arrogance many sinkies have despite their bad enunciation of words both in mandarin and english that somehow they are superior to other nationalities especially poorer asian nationalities that don't speak english as their first language even though their english is at most some screwed up patois. Just simply unbelievable.

I was ranked Top 4 in Chinese (Kanji) calligraphy competition from San Francisco Japantown to Tokyo Shinjuku. Is that a good enough Chinese for you. Sorry, I couldn't win the championship. The Japansese guy was that damn good, that I'd have to give it to him.

calligraphy and writing are very different from oral delivery and speech. when a sinkie speaks singlish in sf chinatown, everyone including birds can hear him/her. hearts will stop and ambulance sirens will follow. that's the reason why one hears much fire truck and ambulance sirens going on every minute in sf. sinkies are in town, especially around parc 55 hotel where the sia crew checks in.

LOL you mean the Union Square area? Yeah, everynight sirens keep ringing all the way to Tenderloin, just sparing Nob Hill. Anyway, I lived in Nob Hill awhile then shifted to Rincon. :D

For SG, Hokkien or Min-nan dialect is more prominent than any other dialect even thought the government tried to killed the various dialects in the early 80s. You have Hokkien Peng but not other Peng.

For those who do not speak English even though Hokkien is an alien dialect to you, you are also put under the Hokkien Peng platoon. This is more for the convenience of organisation. When you have this concept of organisation everyone is just a digit.

No. As a Teochew myself, I'd say Teochew is not a good language for guys to tackle girls. It's too soft-pitched. More suitable for girls to lead guys on. I'd simply use English with British accent since any girl worth tackling can understand English nowadays. I can do it with American accent but I feel more comfortable and dignified with British accent. American accent somehow projects an image of wild and care less. Singlish accent is a no-no unless preparing for a fight.

You mean Tommy Koh's brand of English which the Govt always blandish as the English that Singaporean should emulate is No No?

I don't really know what accent I speak in naturally. I guess it's somewhere between British and American, neither here nor there. I guess that what you people mean by Singlish accent should be something like how Lim Swee Say speaks English. The best Singapore-Chinese accent in English are by the likes of Lee Kuan Yew and Tang Liang Hong and despite distaste for his politics, I'd have to say, Chee Soon Juan too. The likes of Tommy Koh and Tony Tan are a rung below.

Richard Hu at one time has the best Singapore English - very Oxford like. I agree that Tommy Koh and Tony Tan are lower in level and LSS very close to Singlish. TCB's English in my opinion is better than Tony Tan. TJS has the tendency to stammer.

Oh yes, Richard Hu, he gave the best Budget speeches, regardless of contents, but best in English. Could have graced Westminster without problem.

LSS is a disgrace! I cringe whenever i hear him speak.....another one not far behind is keechiu.....how come all these overseas grads never polish up their engrish? or are they trying to 'connect' with the heartland?

The young street corner gangsters nowadays can hardly speak hokkien, speak mandarin campaign really successful

1 or 2 more generation, Hokkien will most certainly has it's eventual death in Singapore except for the swear words and some phrases, an irreversible inevitability. few Chinese Singaporeans below 35 yrs old conversed in dialects. the use of dialects for those below 20 yrs old are almost non-existent.

I would enjoy it immensely if Lim S.S were to debate at Westminster. He would be torn into shreds in no time. :D

That's Sinkies for you. Always appealing to the lowest common denominator. Sinkies are easily tickled at the mere utterance of Hokkien and Singlish words. To stand out with perfect diction and grammar would be "extra" or "haolian" in Sinkie society. All individual aspirations must be curtailed in in this collectivist country obsessed with envy and social status.

He'll end up crying LOL

Here's a glimpse of the intellectual giant that is Lim S.S:
