I think there's an over-reliance on automation on the newer MRT lines, where the trains are driverless.
Anyhow, the warning signs were already present long before this spate of incidents. I had been travelling along the East-West line and sometimes I could hear horrible screeching/creaking/bumping sounds from under the train along the tracks... it sounded as though there was a lack of lubrication or maintenance.
Well, in crony-corporate fascist states such as Singapore, corporations are way higher in the food chain than (ordinary) individuals, so your convenience, prosperity and safety can all go kiss Saw Phaik Hwa's ass.
