When the Old Guard compiled and wrote the Pledge "xxx regardless of race, language or religion", they wanted all sinkies (born and bred in the island pledging allegiance to the country) to know whether you were born black, yellow, white, purple or red and practising any religion or uttering any language, you are a sinkie.
When some people took to twisting this Pledge to justify the hordes of foreigners taking over jobs from sinkies and said the Pledge should be read as "The very birth of Singapore as an independent nation was founded on the ideals of meritocracy, regardless of race, language or religion." This is twisting fact into fiction.
Yes, meritocracy is right. If you are Chinese sinkie and cannot handle a job better than ah neh sinkie, you do not deserve the job. On the other hand, when a foreigner is given a job in the name of meritocracy and a sinkie (mind you, not a permanent shit, which the pappies used to describe as locals when in reality every PS is a foreigner) is kicked aside, this ain't meritocracy in the national interest.
