Fala Chen Returns to Hong Kong for Upcoming Movie

1671367969328.png

Although Fala Chen (陳法拉) is making grounds in Hollywood, she remains attached to Hong Kong entertainment industry and is reportedly returning back to Hong Kong to star in Nick Cheung’s (張家輝) new movie.

After ending her contract with TVB in 2013, Fala went to the Juilliard School to pursue a Master of Fine Arts. After graduation, Fala took her first step in Hollywood by signing with an American talent agency and made her appearance in The Undoing. Last year, Fala became the first Hong Kong actress to appear in a Marvel movie, Shang-Chi and the Nine Rings alongside Tony Leung.

It has been eight years since Fala worked in Hong Kong, but the actress has reportedly set her eyes on a new project Suk Mung <贖夢> led by Nick. Not only will Nick act in the movie, the actor will also be taking on the director’s role.

Details of the New Film

The upcoming movie received funding through the Hong Kong Film Development Council and was approved with a record-breaking budget of $9 million Hong Kong dollars. The movie was originally scheduled to be filmed in May of this year but it was pushed back due to the pandemic and to accommodate Nick’s schedule.

Although little details of the movie has been released, it is reported that Nick personally offered the role to Fala after being impressed by her growth in Hollywood. In return, Fala was interested in working with Nick and agreed to the project without negotiating on the appearance fee.

Rebecca Zhu and Terrance Lau Join the Cast

TVB artistes Rebeca Zhu (朱晨麗) and Terrance Lau (劉俊謙) will be playing a nurse and a doctor in the upcoming film and have a romantic storyline.

When the reporters reached out to Rebecca on the new project, Rebecca was vague and responded, “I am planning to film some movies, but it is not convenient to reveal too many details. I will share details with you at a later date.

Lonely Christmas for Nancy Wu?

1671456858862.png

Despite good friend Bob Lam’s (林盛斌) help in sussing out suitable partners for actress Nancy Wu (胡定欣), she remains single!

Attending “TVB Brand Award” ceremony organized by TVB weekly, Nancy had expressed that she would be celebrating with family and friends, and has already firmed up arrangements as Christmas is a festival that she really likes. Recounting a recent conversation with Bob, he had told her, “It’s the year-end and your “report card” ain’t looking too good,” to which Nancy replied, “Indeed, it means you must work doubly hard!” and Bob affirmed “Okay, well noted!”

Nicknamed the entertainment industry’s golden matchmaker, Bob has successfully found partners for many female celebrities including Queenie Chu (朱慧敏) who tied the knot with cardiologist Jason Chan and Sammi Cheung (張秀文), who married finance whiz Billy Wong (王大權). While Bob has been enthusiastically sending photos of a selection from his network of bachelor acquaintances to Nancy, he shared that he has yet to find someone whom she has expressed a liking for.

Past Relationships Ended In Disappointment

Achieving successes in her acting career, Nancy’s past relationships have all ended with breakups, with Deep Ng (吳浩康) and Kenneth Ma (馬國明) amongst her previous boyfriends. Deep married Margiela Kwok (郭思琳) in February this year, while Kenneth and Roxanne Tong (湯洛雯) are also busy planning their dream wedding set for 2023. Romantic rumors had flown all over with co-star Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) on the set of A Fist Within Four Walls <城寨英雄> back in 2016, but things came to naught, and Ruco later admitted to going on dates with Phoebe Sin (單文柔), though many were of the view is that Ruco had made use of her for publicity.

Unidentified sources have pointed out that Nancy’s perfectionistic character caused some of the people she has worked with to find her difficult, for which she earned the unflattering “Hong Kong girl” (expressing undesirable personality traits such as self-centeredness) label.

Career Over Romance?
Nancy was 18 when she took part and placed fourth in TVB International Chinese New Talent Singing Championship. Two years later, she participated in “TVB Magazine 3rd Annual CoverGirl Competition”; emerging Overall Winner, and was invited to join the Artiste Training Class. Proving her acting chops, Nancy also clinched the TV Queen award for two consecutive years in 2015 and 2016.

Not rushing into things, Nancy says she will let nature take its course, and “dare not” list down criteria for her other half!

“My Date with a Vampire” Movie Production Delayed

1671461157749.png

Confirmed to be starring Bosco Wong (黃宗澤), Jacky Cai (蔡潔), Rosita Kwok (郭柏妍) and Annie Liu (劉心悠), upcoming film My Date with a Vampire <驅魔龍族馬小玲> was originally slated to wrap in mid-December but has met with production delays!

Stress Over Directorial Debut

The movie version of ATV classic My Date with a Vampire <我和殭屍有個約會> is helmed by director Chen Sap Sum (陳十三), who is setting near perfect expectations for his directorial debut, with 20 or even 30 retakes for some painstaking scenes. A particular scene at a mall in Kowloon Bay, which had Ma Siu Ling descend from the third to second floor before fighting off vampires was to last just one minute, but had taken over 4 hours to film, with the two body doubles continuously dashing up and down the set.

With many re-takes, filming was unable to wrap on time, causing inevitable overrun on the original budget – which the film’s investors have yet to express their stance about.
On December 11, filming halted following the completion of a major scene, with the production crew celebrating male lead Bosco’s birthday. As the cast have their respective filming commitments to fulfil, the restart date for filming can only be fixed when everyone’s schedule matches again.

Good Chemistry with Bosco

Director Chen Sap Sum admitted to the overrun when asked, “I didn’t want to compromise just to meet the schedule, (and) am really grateful for the production cast and crew’s unity… (what about investors?) I will work on the footage and see how many days of filming we need to add on before negotiating again,” Having dreams about filming ever since filming halted, Chen Sap Sum is relishing the pressure and happy to have the support of the team. He spoke about the joys of working on set with Bosco, “I already have good chemistry with him, so there’s no need to say too much, he can already get it, and is a very good actor.”

Joey Meng to Surprise
Inviting many actors to make guest appearances, the director’s wife – the original “Ma Siu Ling” Joey Meng (萬綺雯) has also returned earlier to Hong Kong from mainland China for filming. According to sources, Joey will be relinquishing her role of a vampire slayer and will play a vampire instead, which Chen Sap Sum teases to be a “surprise” for audiences.

Sisley Choi’s Body is Full of Injuries

1671632508942.png

In the industry for nine years, Sisley Choi (蔡思貝) won TVB Best Actress in 2020 and is known for her hard work ethics. Behind her success story is a body full of injuries.

Filming Let Me Take Your Pulse <你好,我的大夫> earlier, Sisley revealed that she often suffers from headaches. The traditional Chinese medicine consultant on set even commented on Sisley’s injuries, stating that the actress is injured and bruised all over. Ever since then, Sisley has learned the importance of taking better care of herself. Right after filming an outdoor scene in the blazing heat, Sisley quickly shielded herself from the sun with an umbrella and consumed large amounts of liquids to avoid a heat stroke.

Known for her hardworking behavior, Sisley often gets injured on set from different fight scenes. She has previously worked through her high fevers. Aside from pulling all-nighters and not looking after her health, Sisley was once admitted to the hospital due to her poor immune system.

“I hit my head previously so I suffer from frequent headaches. There was one day where I just couldn’t take it anymore and I asked the doctor if he could massage my neck. I felt so much better afterwards. The following night when we were all out getting a late-night snack, I asked him to do some acupuncture. The doctor didn’t charge me, but he say I was injured all over and that I need full body treatments,” Sisley admitted.

Filming Let Me Take Your Pulse with a doctor on set as a consultant, Sisley developed an interest in traditional Chinese medicine and finally began paying better attention to her health and diet.

Fala Chen and Nick Cheung Start Work on New Movie

1671806552054.png

Nick Cheung (張家輝), Fala Chen (陳法拉), Rebecca Zhu (朱晨麗), and Terrance Lau (劉俊謙) attended the blessing ceremony for their new movie Redemption <贖夢> in Tuen Mun. This will be Fala’s first time working with Nick, and they will be playing a couple plagued with constant nightmares as their mental health deteriorates. They later meet Rebecca and Terrance, who are part of their medical team, while mysterious events ensue.

Wearing multiple hats as an actor, scriptwriter, and director, Nick joked that he will be making sure to take care of himself, “Of course there will be passionate scenes with Fala, and they’re really exciting! But it’s the kind where you’ll be scared after watching.”

Nick admitted to inviting Fala to return to Hong Kong, and convinced her with the realistic script. “She’s loyal, not just to me but to all of Hong Kong. This time, all of our crew joined with an elevated level of work ethic…They stepped up to help after they heard that the movie was being funded by the [Hong Kong] Film Development Fund.”

Since making a name for herself in Hollywood, Fala has not filmed in Hong Kong for years yet she still feels right at home. She joined the project because she really wanted to work with Nick, who is famous for pushing new boundaries in his work. “Everyone is very passionate, so I’m very touched. There are many new crew members who have just entered the industry and are super hard working, running around completing their tasks. They are the hope of Hong Kong’s film industry.” As for juggling family time, Fala admitted to being in Hong Kong by herself but she can “fly back to join them for Christmas and New Year” when the crew takes a holiday break.

Redemption is Nick’s fourth film as a director, and he continues to tackle gritty subject matter in his films. He shared that a director has reached out to see if he would be interested in filming a comedy and he may consider. Reporters joked that he should film a biopic about Lionel Messi’s life as many find that they look similar.

Ali Lee Remains Single for Christmas

1671889517076.png

Ali Lee (李佳芯), Ricco Ng (吳偉豪), Yoyo Chen (陳自瑤), Candice Chiu (趙希洛), and Tsui Wing (徐榮) attended the first promotional event for their new drama The Perfect Man <有種好男人>. Ali will portray Ricco’s mother and she shared that she was surprised and nervous when she first received notice, “I was like no way, him as my son? Not everyone can accept someone with a 17-year-old son.”

Ricco shared that there is inherent difficulty in portraying a 17 year old as he has a mature look. He had to rely on the styling team to help him appear as a convincing teenager. When asked if he was disappointed that he is playing Ali’s son instead of boyfriend, he replied, “We do have some hugging scenes, but her parenting style treats us like best friends.”

The drama is airing during the “cannon fodder period,” as it coincides with the Christmas holidays and many viewers are busy with celebrations. Ali did not seem too worried about the ratings, as she reasoned that there might be more people watching television since it is the holiday season.

However, Ali’s fans have been very upset at the broadcast date as it puts her out of the running for TVB Best Actress. Fans even called for her to leave TVB. Ali replied, “Because of this? It’s not worth it. This is really a small issue. My fans can be overprotective–they also worry about whether I eat enough or am dressed warmly.”

For Christmas, Ali already made plans with her family and and will be going to music festivals to support her friends. However, she does not have any dates lined up and joked that she has “no market.” Reporters asked whether her rumored date with a male friend in Japan had scared away all the suitors, and she joked, “I can’t help it if they don’t approach me. Should I make a public announcement?”

Ultimately, it’ll be the emotionally touched and motivated fans who will vote for me.”

1672060609582.png

TVB and Youku collaboration, Memories Beyond Horizon <無限超越班>, is a new variety show featuring Hong Kong’s biggest celebrities. Andy Lau (劉德華), Tony Leung (梁朝偉), Louis Koo (古天樂), Sean Lau (劉青雲), and Kara Hui (惠英紅) will participate as mentors, while Charmaine Sheh will be both a mentor and program manager with behind-the-scenes responsibilities.

The show will see a group of actors being trained on acting skills and receiving feedback from esteemed and well-established veteran actors. In recent promotional photos, Fiona Sit (薛凱琪), Aarif Rahman (李治廷), Timmy Xu (許魏洲), Li Yitong (李一桐), and Liu Yaowen (劉耀文) will be a part of the program’s lineup. To test their acting skills, the participating artistes will be tasked with reenacting scenes from classic dramas, such as The Legendary Ranger (原振俠), The Legend of the Condor Heroes (射鵰英雄傳), War and Beauty (金枝慾孽), Beyond the Realm of Conscience (宮心計), Triumph in the Skies (衝上雲霄), and Line Walker (使徒行者).

Although Charmaine returned to Hong Kong to spend time with her mother for the holidays, filming obligations for Memories Beyond Horizon forced her to return to China earlier than planned. When asked for her thoughts regarding the project, Charmaine expressed, “I am very happy to be able to revisit many of Hong Kong’s classic productions. I will be a mentor and design programming content to test the students’ acting skills. I will also take part in acting on the show.”

Many notable stars such as Sheren Tang (鄧萃雯), Maggie Cheung (張可頤), Benz Hui (許紹雄), Angie Chiu (趙雅芝), and Kent Tong (湯鎮業) appeared as guests in the first episode, which aired on December 17.

In the episode, Fiona expressed her desire to diversify her acting portfolio. As one of the show’s mentors, Kara did not hold back in providing feedback and chastised Fiona for being limited due to “looking like a porcelain doll at the age of 40.” On the awkward exchange, Charmaine commented, “Every mentor has their own style. Since I also have the role as program manager, it is my responsibility to try and balance out the relationship between students and their mentors.”

Leila Tong Moves to New Zealand “To Find Herself”

1672062235652.png

After a successful run in the Hong Kong drama, theater, and film industries, Leila Tong (also known as Leila Kong 唐寧) began to step away from the spotlight in 2017. Having started out her acting career as a child star, Leila had more than 50 projects under her belt with nearly 30 years of experience. Many were surprised the 41-year-old decided to put aside her acting career to start afresh in New Zealand.

In a recent video, Leila introduced her fans to many of New Zealand’s tourist attractions, and even went ziplining on camera. After the ride, the divorced mom began crying and reflected on the decision to move her two children to a new country.

“When I started acting at a young age, I took on the stage name Tong Ning. This identity has been with me for a long time. Sometimes, I would wonder whether there is a difference between Tong Ning and Leila Kong. Tong Ning seems like such a happy person all the time and would introduce and share with fans all these things, as if she is really mature and knows what she’s doing. But then what kind of person is Leila Kong? I feel that I don’t really quite know myself. The Leila Kong that I know is always afraid of things and does not have the courage to do a lot of things. I would worry that I can’t do something or won’t do something well,” she admitted.

Hoping to overcome her fear, Leila decided to step out of her comfort zone and relocate to New Zealand. “In addition to planning a better future for my family, I also want to take this opportunity to find out who Leila Kong really is.”

After seeing supportive comments from fans, Leila followed up with a more positive message, “I often feel that life is a journey of constant searching. Finding the meaning of life, and finding your own value. I have spent a lot of time in my life acting out other characters, and indeed I haven’t really gotten to know myself and understand myself. If I had 80 years to live, I’d be halfway there by now. It’s definitely not an easy thing to understand myself. If I don’t start now, I’m afraid it’ll be too late.”

Ali Lee Plays Her Fourth Maternal Role in “The Perfect Man”

1672145584458.png

Starring Ali Lee (李佳芯), Joe Ma (馬德鐘), Yoyo Chen (陳自瑤), and Ricco Ng (吳偉豪), TVB romance The Perfect Man <有種好男人> is premiering on December 26. Playing a maternal role for the fourth time, Ali will be a mother with a 17-year-old son in the drama.

Going from Goddess to Super Mom

Recognized for her versatile acting, Ali is especially convincing in maternal roles. From her strong and independent character in Provocateur <與諜同謀> to her winsome performance in Who Wants A Baby? <BB來了>, and to her money-greedy single mother role in Death By Zero <殺手>, Ali has demonstrated her ability to portray various maternal characters.

In The Perfect Man, Ali has a very sweet relationship with her 17-year-old son, Miu Sing Lam (Ricco Ng). He even nicknames his mother as Yau Yau and would behave like her boyfriend. While their backstory is still a mystery, there are undoubtedly anticipations on Ali and Ricco’s mother-son chemistry.

Only 40 years old in real life, Ali admitted it was difficult to imagine what it is like to raise a 17-year-old son. “It feels like a very distant thing, so I definitely took some time to get the
feeling in the beginning. There is a different mode to interacting with an older child.” Fortunately, Ali got along with Ricco very well as they eventually built a solid tacit understanding with each other.

Asked if she desires to become a working mother, Ali said, “I believe everyone wants to make each stage shine its brightest. I am also the type of person who can’t stop working, so even if I have family and children in the future, I will still find something to do. Especially since I am a great multi-tasker, I am confident in fulfilling my life.”

Ricco Felt Very Supported by Ali

As for 24-year-old Ricco who is playing a teenager, he laughed that his biggest challenge was his mature appearance. Attempting to make himself look younger with different clothing and hairstyle, Ricco expressed it was a tough period trying to fix his hair with mousse and clips.

Otherwise, he was happy to work with Ali, who took care of him a lot during filming. He shared, “I initially felt very nervous and stressed because I was a rookie with not much acting experience besides Come Home Love: Lo and Behold <愛.回家之開心速遞>. Ali made the atmosphere feel very lively, so I was infected by her positive energy and was able to relax and perform better.”

“Forensic Heroes 5’s” Ending: Will There Be a Sixth Installment?

1672233767668.png

Airing its final episode on December 23, TVB anniversary drama Forensic Heroes 5 <法證先鋒V> continued the unifying theme of the franchise by having Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) dress up as a clown!

Coco Chiang Steals Scene
In the finale episode, Bosco and Coco Chiang’s (蔣怡) 5-minute eye contact “face-off” scene evoked trending discussions amongst netizens. They were intrigued by Coco’s cynical half-smile and devilish look. Interviewed, the actress said, “Because I totally couldn’t see what the male lead looks like behind the camera, I had to use my imagination. And because I wanted scene continuity, I spent a long time memorizing the lines, I’d recite till I dozed off, and continued reciting when I woke up, I was memorizing the whole day long,”

Bosco Continues Clown Arc

Towards the end of the episode, Bosco told Coco, “Does everyone become the clown you envision them as?”, after which he self-paints as a clown and reveals sinister laughter, leading viewers to take it as a sign that he would turn villain. Keeping mysterious about what the ending really meant, the actor said, “The clown makeup is also a cliffhanger, will there really be ‘Forensic Heroes VI’? Everyone doesn’t know, it is in keeping with the clown character which has featured in the series all along. When asked about it, I’d ask everyone to guess at what the ending means,”

Sharing about his clown getup, Bosco shared, “Putting on the makeup and filming took quite long, as I had to start from zero and film while enhancing the makeup at the same time, little by little, the foundation part were done by the makeup artist and I only did the colors.”

Bonus and Venus Not Shy About Intimate Scenes
Chatting about his scene of rescuing co-star Venus Wong (王敏奕) which included mouth-to-mouth and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), Bosco laughed and said that he was on too chummy terms with Venus for both of them to feel any embarrassment. “Of course before filming we’d communicate about it and perform the adequate safety measures,”

Described as the warm guy on set of Forensic Heroes as he would send protective guards to his co-stars, Bosco said, “I myself sustained many injuries when filming action scenes, so I would always prepare a pack of guards, when I see that they did not wear these protection guards I’d lend mine to them, the key thing during filming is that no one gets hurt.”

Sharing her most memorable scene on set, Venus recalled her scenes filmed in the cargo containers, where she was saved by Bosco, as “it was the second time he saved me, it was also his birthday…Bosco is really a warm guy and took great care of those around him, and liked treating everyone to food, (but) I was the only one who was pranked by him the whole day long.”

Shirley Yeung Never Considered Giving Up On Her Daughter

Announcing the birth of her daughter Krystal (楊卓穎) in 2012 and son Kody in 2020, former Miss Hong Kong and TVB actress Shirley Yeung (楊思琦) opened up on her experience as a single mum recently, and said she “never once considered giving up on Krystal”!

Remained Tight-lipped to Prevent Things from Getting Even Murkier

Interviewed on a recent Chinese variety show Lily Talk <麗人麗語>, the 44-year-old described how she had to face the media linelight then when pregnant with her first child, Krystal, allegedly the daughter of diver Andy Ng (吳帥). She later left him to raise her child on her own and gave birth to Krystal in the States.

“How to go about facing the media after giving birth, I felt a great deal of pressure at that time,” She also shared how the negative press made her feel helpless.“Relationships aren’t always smooth-sailing, but (because) I am an artiste, the media magnified (what happened) to me and blew up every small detail to do up their reports,”

What the World Thought Did Not Matter

Explaining how she chose not to clarify things in case she “dug a deeper hole for herself”, she said, “I was the one who was clearest about the truth, what the world thought of me didn’t really matter, this was my fate,” As someone who adored kids, she also added that despite her situation, “I couldn’t do away with the baby, I think that would be impossible. That thought has never once crossed my mind,” Thanking her mother for her steady support, she recalled, “She told me very calmly, “What issue is there? You have the ability (to raise the child), our family is behind you,””

Things Can Only Get Better After the Worst

Despite this, it was difficult to face wagging tongues, as Shirley recalls, “It was the first time in my life I was publicly reviled, but having survived it, being an actor is just a job but my kids are the ones who will accompany me to the end of life. Why should I let a little criticism get me down?” In 2019, Shirley announced her pregnancy with her second child, and that she was married to a man from outside of showbiz. She welcomed her son in February 2020.

Having gone down the path of a single mother, Shirley thinks there was no need to mind what others thought. “Now everyone’s living standards have increased, women are financially secured, and would rather find a partner to grow old with…there is great deal of competition. As a result you might not find someone compatible, it’s not that I chose to be a single mum…life is not only about finding a partner, you still gotta go on even if you can’t find that someone, in this world there isn’t anyone whom you can’t do, no one should (think) that way.”

Louis Koo on Expanding to Hollywood

1672487585542.png

With the ambition and foresight to expand and diversify the Hong Kong film industry, Louis Koo (古天樂) has dedicated an immense amount of time, money, and effort in groundbreaking projects. His production company, One Cool Group, released Warriors of Future <明日戰記>, which is currently streaming on Netflix. As Hong Kong’s first foray in sci-fi action films, Warriors of Future achieved widespread success and was praised for its advanced visual effects.

Speaking with the Hollywood entertainment news online platform, Deadline, Louis shared plans for his production company to expand into Hollywood. Next steps have already been taken, as One Cool Group has already invested in two Hollywood animation films The Mitchells vs. The Machines and Vivo.

Hoping for additional investment prospects in Hollywood films, Louis’ primary goal is to create films that would enhance the Hong Kong film industry’s use of new technology, such as virtual production and AI techniques. He expressed, “Currently, Hong Kong does not have any virtual production stages. This technology can improve the production of science fiction films. Our goal is not only to produce sci-fi films, but to explore and embrace the technology itself. If it turns out that building a virtual set stage in Hong Kong is not cost-effective, then we will fly to the United States or Australia for shooting.”

In addition to the major goal of expanding to Hollywood, one of Louis’ smaller-scale goals is to cultivate new Hong Kong directors and actors. “Right now, Hong Kong is in need of discovering new screenwriters and directors. Although the Hong Kong film industry was brilliant in the past, it has not grown to cater to the younger generation, who are not interested in internationally renowned genres of action or crime films. We want to develop films that are more relatable to their lifestyles and experiences.”

On whether he worries about the pandemic negatively affecting his goals, Louis remains positive, “The Hong Kong film industry has reached its lowest point, so it’s time to start rebounding. It is the most suitable time right now to explore different genres and try out different things. We can’t go back to repeating the same old formula over and over again.”

Mat Yeung Sentenced to 18 Days in Jail for DUI Convictions

1672575099484.png

After being convicted of driving under the influence twice within two years – once in 2020 and again in 2021 – Mat Yeung (楊明) was given an 18-day prison sentence last year by the court. Appealing his DUI sentence, Mat appeared in court with his girlfriend Lisa Chong (莊思明) and her sister Jacqueline Chong ((莊思敏).

Emphasizing Mat’s repeated offences of careless driving and lack of concern for the safety of others, the judge ultimately adhered to the original verdict, and Mat was ordered to serve his sentence immediately.

Although Lisa had cried last year when the ruling was first announced, she remained dry-eyed this time around. Appearing expressionless, Lisa and Jacqueline calmly approached Mat and collected his personal belongings before the officers took him away.

Since Mat is sentenced for 18 days, he will not be given holidays exemption. As such, Mat will be spending the upcoming holidays in jail, with an anticipated release date of January 8, 2023.

According to sources, the 41-year-old actor will be held at the detention center for five days while going through and completing the proper inmate procedures. He will then be transferred to Stanley Prison to finish serving his sentence.
