Yes but it required one of those super expensive marbles which were a lot heavier and stronger than the cheaper ones.

You must be referring to the "susu", a multi coloured marble with white background.
As opposed to the "goondu" which is a glass marble with only one colour inside.

The Goondu marble is marble coloured as opposed to the chalky coloured normal marbles and they break easily unlike the Goondus. Some goondus actually have a small ball bearing inside. It has nothing to do with glass marbles which are not the marbles used for playing as they are smaller in size.

We were rooting for Home Grown Talents, not some "buy from " some where to win medals for a country, they never knew or loved!. We were proud in school then, holding that tiny Singapore flag on National Day , singing the Anthem & reciting the pledge..then came the PAP who blurred the line between a Nation & a Political party, the generation thinks that SINgapore is PAP & not a country called SINGAPORE!, we have lost that pride! we have lost it as a people of a country.

Not New Nation, the first afternoon paper was the SINGAPORE HERALD, it was too liberal for the Min of Culture, if my memory serve me well, they closed it or bought it over? and it became the trashy paper called "New Nation"...Singapore Herald was very popular for its editorials written by REAL JOURNALISTS!!

What is having great material wealth, when we don't feel proud to hold the flag in our hand, sing the anthem & recite the pledge anymore, those who grew up in the 50/60/70 & even 80...will glow with that pride...we are SINgapore..SINgaporeans!!

Exactly my sentiments, Halsey! When I was growing up, all the way to my teens, I was always excited to watch the National Day Parades on TV. Remember how it used to alternate between the Padang and the decentralized venues? There was a sense of pride watching it then. After GCT became PM and started his nonsense about Singapore Inc. and the multi-million dollar ministerial salaries, I stopped watching NDPs. From the 80s onwards, the damn thing became so bloody contrived, it was a pain to watch. Things got worse when they started this stupid trend of commissioning a new National Day song every year. Singapore is the only country in the world that does that. The idiots in charge don't even realize that the more they try to create this artificial feel, the more the true born and bred Singaporeans hate it. I served my NS with pride and finished my reserve liability in full and back then I would have gladly fought for Singapore. Now, go figure!

I have not said the pledge for many years because I can no longer say it sincerely believing the words, especially the line that says "to build a democratic society, based on justice and equality".

I can still recall the old lady at the market asking me "Le si ai susu arsi ai goondu." :o

Yo, side lane Ord road. Now unrecognisable Clarke Q. And entertainment was jalan to Peoples Park

Below was teochew muay shop, with porrigde going 5cts (rice 10cts). But best part was 3 swee teochew muay. Ooooh, so sweet ah hia. Oops too much info:p

Remember the Toddy shop at Ord Road where workers will drink cups of the cheap brew in plastic mugs.

It was a fenced up area and had some hawkers inside selling fried "vadeys" and fish that was "tolak-tolak" or finger food for that drink.

Unfortunately that drink was banned.

Poor Man's Brew

kite fights. those were the days. will always remember making my own kite and applying glue and broken glass to the roll of thread. cut off 3 kites in a row on a windy day, and mine was declared the champion on the field at mcpherson. the rest declined to engage. my kite was flying high but snapped to the ground with a sudden downward wind gust. it survived but the flap at the top came off. glued it back with a piece of paper, but it was never the same. it was retired and given a pension.

I remember making our own kites, and the glue with ground glass.

The susu also had colored leaves on them only that they are in opaque white instead of clear glass....small size as well.

What about those bigger white marble balls use solely to break or send your opponents far far away? Some were oval shaped and we called those UFOs...
Marbles also can be used to gamble...you up your game when money is involved.

Ellenborough street? :D

I can still recall the good old days when my friends and me will end up at the Ellenbourough Market for Teochew-porridge.

Many gangsters used to be hanging around there in their Montagut Tee-shirts and showing off their expensive Rolex watches and Dupont lighters.

There were many night-clubs close to Chinatown and Majestic Cinema.

The lifts used to be those that had to be closed manually.

Many of the ladies of the night were then from Sitiawan, Ipoh, Perak.

The hordes from China had not arrived back then as Mao-tse-Tung made it difficult for them to leave.

The Indians too were not able to come as the computer was then still in its formative stages - days of huge Burroughs / Minolta.

The smell of opium being smoked wafted through the air.

Huge sign-boards of 555 cigarettes close to the Ellenbourough Market.

The name Ellenbourough has completely disappeared from modern-Singapore

Swissotel merchant court named their cafe after the market.
It sits more or less at the same spot where the market used to be.

kg amber use to fly/fight their kites from.

In the 60's we used to fly kites in an open field along Kim Chuan Road next to the Upper Air Observatory (where the staff used to release a balloon in the evening)

This place was actually part of the Singapore Telephone Board (STB) and many of its staff were residing here in single-story homes.

Next to it was a huge round tank which was home to swallows.

Directly opposite was the old Bethany Church run by a kindly and charitable old Chinese lady. We called her "Bock Su".

She used to give us biscuits and other simple goodies in those days.

She did this to all, irregardless of our race and religion. A truly wonderful and upright women dressed in samfoo.

We had Rose Cinema close by and next to it many ponds with kampong homes dotting it in the midst of coconut trees.

Kim Chuan Avenue led into Lim Teck Boo and Jalan Kambing where many Indians kept herd of cows.

The old Aik Hoe Rubber Factory was still there prior to a fire.

Kim Chuan Road ended up near the Vector Control Unit before the Paya Lebar Airport.

Every Monday we had to bring our live chickens for injection by the Primary Production Dept.

The procedure fattened the fowls and prevented sickness.

Bird flu was then unheard of then.

Pigs roamed wildly along with their little ones in tow.

From the back of Rose cinema we could reach Lorong Tai Seng.

There was a huge fire in Lorong Tai Seng in the 60's that razed our favourite shoe-shop selling the cheap SINWA school shoes.

Life was peaceful. No one cared about the colour of skin. Everyone was concerned with survival.

Lorong Tai Seng was a hive of activity.

Look at it today. Victim of modernisation .............

Wet still behind my years, not know pleasures of alcohol yet. Power smell (if headwind), so even walked opposite side.:o But liked the vadeys by ah neh on bicycle elsewhere.

Across the bridge, you had quite a few teochew muay stalls with only benches to squat on. Way before Owen Rd came to picture.

One of the Ellenborough market teochew tze char now moved to shophouse along Redhill road (forgot name liao). Still with single big fridge fronting stall at front restaurant. Good haypoh sambal (crayfish) and ngoh hiang.
