that's the problem isn't it? as far as a good % of them (pious or less pious) and the religious leaders are concerned, their scripture entitles them to go kill, steal and rob neighbours land. while the videos show the orthodox jews protesting, there are a good number of orthodox jews that do support.
if you rely on scripture, you are automatically now obligated to interpret that scripture. and if you are religious, and your religious leader interprets it to kill, rob, steal, then you by religious affiliation are now hereby obligated to follow or be excommunicated from that religion. so in short, religions inherently require you to follow whatever the religious leaders say (not god!) or get kicked out. nobody wants to be kicked out of heaven right? so a lot of people will follow just for that reason whatever that requires. and that is the tip of the iceberg of problems concerning following scripture. the priesthood holds all the cards. not the follower and certainly not god.
to be clear, I'm not pointing fingers at any one religion. any school of thought whether religious, political or even state where they follow their "scripture" without thinking 1st is likely to result in crimes against people. need an example? communist china's "scripture" forbids any allegiance to belief to anything other than communist party rule. so what do they do? lock uighurs up. you think that's bad? what about falungong where they harvest organs from live prisoners? the uighurs got off lightly.

the main point I'm trying to make is following religion is not the same as believing or having faith in god/allah/yahweh. they are 2 very separate things. following religion requires you to suspend your own thinking and to just follow human religious leaders. you can also apply to political leaders. having faith does not require me to suspend my thinking or questioning.
for another perspective, if a god exists and created us, I feel like it's like a parent. mother or father. If you ask your parent a question will you be sent to hell? I don't feel so. If such a parent were my parent and acted so vindictively, I would not follow them. I believe you are a parent too.
