That has nothing to do with Tiongs ruling HK. The rise of China accelerated the demise of HK because it is not competitive. While some businesses retain HK as gateway to China, majority has moved directly into China itself. Businesses decline hence standard of living declines.

HK, despite having China as its support, managed to have container traffic in 2017 below what it was in 2009 (financial crisis) - barely above 20 million TEUs. Dropped from No.3 to No.6!

SG, in spite of not having China as support and hostile neighbours like Malaysia and Indonesia, managed to grow container traffice from 25.8 million TEUs in 2009 to 33. 7 million TEUs in 2017, keeping its No. 2 spot.

Both cannot fight with Shanghai, no.1 since overtaking SG in 2010.
