The Armchair Anarchist is in his early 50s and had a 30 year career in top tier banks in global financial centers such as London, New York, Tokyo and of cos Singapore where I spend my formative years in my field of work. I am currently regional head of my division for Asia Pacific and a member of the global executive committee of said division, having been so for the last 10 years.

In the last 5 years, the global financial crisis struck, destroying hundreds of thousands of jobs in the banking and securities industries. But in Armchair Anarchist’s particular field of expertise, demand for highly experienced staff has been very strong due to regulatory pressure and balance sheet deleveraging. I had been offered jobs in Frankfurt, London, New York and Hong Kong; many after just 1 or 2 interviews. You will notice that I did not mention Singapore. For I did not get a single job offer from that supposedly pre-eminent financial and wealth management center. Yes I had been to interviews with banks seeking my particular skills. But guess what? The interviewers were all Indians from India and the feed back I got from my contacts in the industry tells me that the jobs eventually went to fellow Indians from the sub-continent.

There is no question that there is widespread prejudice and racism in the hiring practices in Singapore. This happened because the govt never considered it necessary to enact anti-prejudice legislation and Singaporeans are too passive in fighting for their rights. This sort of thing would have faced legal challenges in other countries but not in Singapore.

I happened to hear from HR people last time about hiring practice in Australia, the company actually have to make sure they advertised sufficient times and duration in major newspapers to show their effort in hiring locals...

So different from SG half baked manpower database idea that is belittling Singaporeans rights to jobs - are Singaporeans not worth to have jobs advertised looking for them in major newspapers? also never heard before two weeks is sufficient duration for hiring...

My fren's wife worked 42 years in a polytechnic ....
Upon reaching age of 62 mgmt told her she will not be re-hired as her past year performance is C-level. The peerformance review was tweaked becos a div one officer with such rating would not be able to last 42 years in that oganisation && on occasion recd performance bonus. The Director of Library(academically under-qualified person who got there by apple polishing) in SP has devilish plans and ulterior motives - among which was to trim cost (so that she comes out smelling like a rose and not like ussual ceespool); avoid a cost of $10,000 provided for in RRA in the event that the job was no longer needed. & to move her yes-men ga.ng upwards.
The victim went to MOM & SP surrendered but forced a big pay cut & a lot loss of perks built up over 42 years. As mgmt was arrogant & non-apologetic she declined the re-hire offer - just to spite the organisation which does not care for its employees even for its long service award holder. Is singapore Polytechnic worth working for??????

SP netted a HR Good Practise award & I wonder what the heck was that for? It ought to b withdrawn. Also an organisation which is ISO certified does not even have an Employee Handbook - tells us a lot about their art of HR practices
Previous principal Tan Hang Cheong has since left & I hope the new principlal knock some sensesense into both cheebye directors - pple clamour recently of lack of female directors... With these types why do you need them to powder their CBs 10 mins before kcnowoff time.

The victim's replacement was a female Indonesian Chinese - this is treasome in such time that PMEs are chasing such plum job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This replacement was also sponsored a part time degree course in library science funded with our taxpayerrs' money...WTF... & money wasted - see below
After some 6 months the female fT quitted as she was forced out by the director of library due to pressure mounted against her for not hiring Singaporean. The director is still arround & I hope she gets sent to an Indian bus plying New Dehli. She attends church in Serangoon/Hougang area & for the dirty things she has done and doing, why attend church?

Why on earth would anyone still want to work at 62??? If she's been working for the past 42 years, she definitely has ample savings that will see her through the golden years.

Our No. 1 enemy is PAP who brings to us this predicament. We still have
a choice in 2016. Vote wisely. Vote PAP OUT OF POWER. We may go through
some transitions , but it is no big deal as long
as policies are formulated with Singaporeans interest at heart.

YET MOM is still talking about sg public job portal in mid 2014 when this shit has been going on for many years - I now becos my nephews cannot get PME's job since 2004 - who are they competing with and who set up the system loaded against them?
Why vote for a gahmen which did not help but is cause of the problem while drawingmega buck salaries???

Not many are lucky like you with no money worry... costs rising faster than my hotrod; bad investments; cud also be children are not ready..... IN any case it is one's personal choice whether to continue working LKY still working isn't it? Or at least worked thru his 80s...

Speaking for myself: I hv lots of money locked up by CPF... despite way past 55 yrs
It infuriates me that I cannot even use my medisave to pay of old man's eyecare problems in SGH!!

For a typical Chinese money NO enuf even got half a miollion cash in bank he must always guard against deppletion as he canot trust the gahmen to bailout. That is the core and origin of kiasuism....
