Most of us owned our first car by buying an old junk and slowly upgrading as our income rose yearly. Not all of us were fortunate to have rich parents who buy cars and properties for their kids. My first vehicle was actually a Honda 100 cc until I got into an accident and decided it was not safe as the accident was caused by the other party. With the insurance money from the accident I paid a deposit and got an old car.

My previous car I paid $85000 COE in 1995. It was even higher than today.

That is because in 1995 the supply of COEs was tight, then past several years under Raymond Lim, COEs were allowed to increase which gave the impression of an affordable COE until population growth and road congestion demand the supply again to be tightened. The supply will again be tightened further sometime early next year, because LTY only intended the tightening to be delayed by 6 months. So COE fees will move up even further.

Remember I cautioned you one year ago but you listened to your friend. Best solution for you now is to buy a second hand car, say with 7 years to scrap and then hope that your business make you rich enough to buy whatever COE in 7 years' time or anytime before that time if the economy goes downhill and COE prices drop for you to seize the opportunity to change to a new car.

I actually upgraded my car last year even though I had 3 years more to go on my old car to take advantage of the relatively low COE.

This is happening right now that people who really need a transport cannot afford one. The government is doing something wrong for their people. In 3rd world countries they have adopted different approach to resolve their congestion and I don't see why out highly paid ministers take the easy way out causing more misery to their citizens. Something here I cannot accept.

There is only one way to control COE from moving up further and even to bring it down:-

1) Control further increase in population
2) Build more MRT lines and further improve other means of public transport
3) Embark on a major road expansion programme to allow more COEs to be supplied. Together with this, residential/commercial building heights need to be raised to more fully utilise land.
4) Adopt Zhihau's idea of using fully or partially cash for COE. This has the effect of reducing demand and total cost of ownership but not make it easier to own a car.
5) Increase road usage tax, together with the improvement in public transport, shift traffic away from private to public thus allowing for more COEs to be issued.

It must be understood that this is a competition for limited resources. If there is a need for car ownership, there must be a sacrifice on usage, all things being equal. But things need not be equal as given above. When we sacrifice usage, the alternatives must be of reasonably good standard and affordable. Therefore we need overall improvement in quality and efficiency across the board.

I may have some gripes about living in Singapore. I will still have gripes living in other countries too and I have lived in other countries half of my life too. We don't live in a perfect world and I for one accepts this fact.
