Teachers not allowed to moonlight soon...

No. That would be a conflict of interest

But in real life, as long as no one complain ............

No peasant should complain about a conflict of interest when you already have scandals: AIMS, Brompton bikes, sex-for-contracts, sex-for-grades, the NTUC... and all taking place under a father-to-son political system.

The cartoon was what happened to my nephew previously.

He joined the Wushu CCA and was said to be doing very well and often praised by the China coach. After 6 months, the coach say, my nephew needs more training but can only improve if he goes to the coach external classes (need to pay extra).

My brother say it is okay and just wanted the son to enjoy. The next time you know, my nephew was not chosen for any performance and sidelined from many things.

No wonder why this ah tiong just teaching wushu can drive BMW 5 series. He must be milking a lot of money from parents.

Thanks to a cartoon article, the MOE is finally doing something.

This was a stupid provision by MOE to start with. How do they even enforce the 6 hours a week limit? They have never done so. It is all left to teachers' integrity to declare when they give tuition. How many teachers bother to declare? How many declare the actual tuition hours?

And when it comes to moonlighting, it is not only tuition that teachers are involved in. There are a growing number of teachers who start a business outside and remain in their teaching positions as it is still very much an iron rice bowl. So the teaching salary provides them with the buffer to take some risks and try out some other business outside. This has been exacerbated by the very generous MOE provision that allows a teachers to take up to 6 months no-pay leave for any reason. There are teachers who use this leave scheme to start up something outside. There are even those who quit to start up a business outside and when the business stabilises, they rejoin the teaching service as contract teachers and enjoy dual income streams. Guess where the focus and attention of such teachers will be?

the actual question should be: how on earth does the teacher find the time to give tuition?
seen a teacher at work? this is what i gather from friends and acquaintances alike.

1. administration: ranging from daily attendance taking to collection of MCs, letters of excuses etc, letters for CCAs, CCA payments, chasing students for fee payments.
2. CCA duties: once a week, not inclusive of meetings with trainers/vendors to discuss schedule, GeBiz for tenders, budget planning, logistic planning, etc.
3. marking: tonnes of it. generally 4 classes of 40 scripts/class per homework given.
4. meetings: staff meeting, level meeting, committee meeting, CCA meeting, Learning Circles or Professional Development meetings, meetings with vendors for CCA, meeting parents.
5. preparation: lesson planning for lesson delivery, slides/videos/worksheets, etc.
6. project involvements: no thanks to something like WITS project in the army, the education fraternity also embarked on silly projects like these.
7. teaching: handling 40 kids at the same time is never easy, so they said

given that all of us spend 24hrs a day, my friends from the education sector don't seem to have a life :p

Then roleplay in bed as a school discipline mistress and a naughty boy who needs to be stripped naked and whipped on stage during school assembly.

then you mean teachers should've gotten a higher pay? they're already the highest paid compared to their counterparts from over the world. unless you're saying the teachers in Singapore should be paid the combined salaries of the teachers in USA, UK, PRC, Germany, France and where else?:biggrin::biggrin:

Why the fucking double standard ?

If ministers and elites can hold so many directoships so why can't the normal joe and jane do the same earning from sidelines ?

SINGAPORE: The Education Ministry (MOE) is reviewing its policy of allowing teachers to give private tuition.

Under existing guidelines, teachers can give up to six hours of tuition per week.

Tuition centre operators Channel NewsAsia spoke to said that if the rules are tightened, the pay of tutors and in turn, tuition fees, may have to be raised.

Operators said parents prefer MOE-trained teachers and if rules are tightened, the demand and pay for such tutors may increase.

Max Tan, director of True Learning Centre, said: "Many tuition centres will be willing to pay higher. We will have to compete with other tuition centres. As a result, you may see that these full-time tutors will be earning much more."

The centre said that under such circumstances, tuition fees may then have to be raised.

But this is likely to affect only agencies with a large pool of current MOE teachers as its tutors.

Another agency Channel NewsAsia spoke to said it is not expecting to raise fees, as less than 20 per cent of its tutors are teachers.

What a joke that the immediate relation that teachers may not be able to moonlight is ....MONEY. Singapore is all about MONEY, like... RIS is all about "ME"!
