SINGAPORE: Two SMRT staff have been sacked over a fatal accident near Pasir Ris MRT station which killed two trainees in March, the National Transport Workers' Union (NTWU) confirmed on Wednesday (Sep 14).

According to Mr Melvin Yong, the union’s executive secretary, NTWU had asked SMRT not to take action against the staff until official investigations were completed.

“The NTWU understands that SMRT has taken action to dismiss two workers related to the incident,” he said. “NTWU has previously written to SMRT to withhold any actions against the affected workers until completion of official investigations so as to not prejudice the outcome of the official investigations.”

NTWU will review the situation, study the grounds for dismissal and work with the affected staff on their next steps, Mr Yong said.

“The union will continue to render affected staff the necessary support and assistance during this difficult time, as we have since the incident,” he added.

On Mar 22, SMRT trainees Nasrifudin Najumudin, 26, and Muhammad Asyraf Ahmad Buhari, 24, were killed after they were hit by an oncoming train near Pasir Ris MRT station. The two men were part of a team investigating a possible fault involving a signalling device on the tracks.

The public transport operator admitted after the accident that maintenance staff had not followed safety procedures.

In response to a query from Channel NewsAsia, SMRT’s Vice President of Corporate Information and Communications Patrick Nathan said: “We do not comment on staff disciplinary measures.”

SMRT sacks train driver in fatal track accident

Transport operator SMRT Corp has fired the train driver who was involved in a fatal track accident that killed two of his colleagues in March.

The Straits Times understands that Mr Rahmat Mohd, 49, was dismissed yesterday after an internal disciplinary inquiry.

Mr Rahmat, who was reassigned to a non-driving job after the accident, said he felt "sad" about the company's decision. "I've no plans at the moment," he added.

Sources said an operations control centre staff member had also left earlier on account of the incident.

SMRT spokesman Patrick Nathan said the company does not comment on staff disciplinary measures.

SMRT: 'standard' protocol to investigate faults during service hours

National Transport Workers' Union executive secretary Melvin Yong said: "NTWU understands that SMRT has taken action to dismiss two workers related to the incident on March 22. NTWU has previously written to SMRT to withhold any actions against the affected workers until completion of official investigations so as to not prejudice the outcome of the official investigations. We will now review the situation, study the grounds for SMRT dismissal, and work with the affected staff on the next steps."

Two SMRT maintenance workers were killed while they were on an East-West Line track near Pasir Ris station on the morning of March 22. Mr Nasrulhudin Najumudin, 26, and Mr Muhammad Asyraf Ahmad Buhari, 24, were hit by an oncoming train while they were undergoing on-the-job training.

The two men were part of a group of 15 sent to investigate a possible fault with a track equipment.

SMRT said in April - after an internal probe into the tragedy - that failure to follow safety measures had led to the accident.

Lapses included allowing a train to ply in automatic mode while workers were on site, not deploying watchmen to look out for approaching trains, and failing to provide early warning to the work team.

The Ministry of Manpower had also called on the operator to tighten its safety procedures a week after the fatal incident. A coroner's inquiry into the accident is expected to convene early next year.

2 cheap rice bowls exchange for 2 cheap life .

Sacked means they were negligent? Means can be prosecuted or sued by families of the dead?

i wonder why there is no criminal negligence charged by the police?
police usually steps in to investigate and charge the car / truck drivers for negligence.
for this case, why there is no court case by police?

just sack and conclude this case?

i want to see police to charge the culprits in court

so I want to know if this case is handled by police or handled by SMRT displinary committee?

is this is criminal (handled by public prosecutor) or civil (handled by SMRT disciplinary)case?

Outcome of SMRT's own investigations. The Police and MOM investigations are not complete. AG will decide if anyone is to be charged in court. Yes, both SMRT and staff can be sued by the families. Usually it will be SMRT that will be end up being sued if there is a civl suit as the stuff were employed by them.

Usually companies wait for all official investigations to complete. You can see from past conduct that SMRT has no idea what it is doing. They seem to flying from the seat of their pants. At a minimum SMRT is definitely going to be charged in court by MOM at least for the 2 deaths. It will not however not affect Desmond's bonus or pay check as it is not part of his KPIs and the Board has not gravitas to dock his pay either as they were recruited not because of their independence or skill set but their past as loyal servants of the Govt in either the public sector or as community activist for Govt programmes.

The protocol is someone must leeport mata .

Maybe the 2 people who died are Malay and this case is easily solved?

one of the punished ones is a m&d so therefore hard for the m&ds to pursue the blame further. Nigger syed will be trying to find a way to blame Chinese for this.

If the malays are not systemetically poisoned, they are forced to work doing dangerous jobs with huge risk to human life, but getting a small pay.

why do u think that Malay always bullied as what you said above? because they have no brain?

The only one I can think of is the system laid down by chink to be blame. :D

The only one I can think of is the system laid down by chink to be blame. :D

as in why the train tracks are designed that way which caused the m&d train driver to not stop in time and the m&d workers to not see the oncoming provided it was actually designed by Chinese
