notice the obscenely high pay of the govt and appallingly slow fault response to. any more doubt that the Old Fart's "culture of greed and scheming" has permeated every level of business that safety cums last and squeezing every cent out of the peasants cums 1st?

The streets are packed because HDB pigeon holes are too small

All spill out to the streets to hang out and enjoy free aircon and wifi

Leave the house at 9, pay $5 for a cup of hot brown water at the cafe and sit there for the whole day

Majulah Golden Period! Majulah sinkapura!

173 people trapped on Singapore Flyer, world's tallest ferris wheel, for six hours

SINGAPORE — More than 170 people were trapped on the world's tallest ferris wheel in Singapore Tuesday.
Media reports say the 165-metre Singapore Flyer stopped working after fire damaged the wheel's control room.
It took six hours to get it working again.
NewsAsia TV says the wheel has had two other malfunctions since it began operating in February.
The Singapore Flyer is about 30 metres taller than the London Eye, formerly the world's tallest observation wheel.

In the air tonight: The Singapore ferris wheel disaster movie

Who would you cast as the people who got stuck on a Singapore ferris wheel for six hours?

Today's news from Singapore surely has all the ingredients of the classic disaster movie (apart from the fact that everyone thankfully escaped unharmed). One hundred and seventy-three pre-Christmas thrill-seekers were suspended in mid-air after the ferris wheel they were riding in broke down.

After six hours enduring everything from vertigo to malfunctioning air conditioning, not to mention nowhere to go to the toilet, the passengers were eventually rescued. The trauma didn't end there - pictures of the event show the trapped revellers having to abseil down from the cabins.

In the Air Tonight: Terror on the Singapore Flyer - or whatever you'd like to call it - would surely be a big hit on ITV come Boxing Day. With excitement like that, who needs Orson Welles and his cuckoo clock?

All we need is a cast. Who would you pick to play the loveable old lady with a weak heart stuck in the highest cabin? Or the wimp who only took a ride in an attempt to try and overcome his vertigo? How about the stressed manufacturer everyone blames, or the heroic grease monkey who averts death at 541 feet? Names please!

A trapped passenger is rescued from the Singapore Flyer

The Singapore Flyer broke down because of a short circuit in one of the drive motors.

Some reports suggest there was a fire in the control room.
About 173 passengers were on board at the time, a spokeswoman for the attraction said.

The majority were still stuck when the power came back on six hours later.
Firefighters were involved in the rescue but only five people had been taken to safety by the time the power came back on.

The Flyer opened this year

One woman abseiled 50m to a platform while onlookers applauded.
A trapped passenger told Channel News Asia the attraction "suddenly jerked to a stop".

Lim Boon Siang explained: "We thought that this could be something normal. And then there was a message that came in that said that it had stopped temporarily.

"Everybody was calm, but initially the air-con was switched off, so it was very hot due to the evening sun."

The Flyer, which opened in February, is 165m high, some 30m taller than the London Eye.

This is the third time it has suffered from technical problems since it became operational.

It was stuck for nearly five hours earlier this month because of extreme weather conditions.

And in July it was stopped due to a fault in the braking system.

During its construction, the directional rotation of the wheel was reportedly switched at the request of feng shui experts.

About 173 people were on board at the time. Some were later lowered to the ground in harnesses, witnesses said.

Re: Over 100 people trapped in Singapore Flyer

We are famous now. NO 1 again , but for the wrong reason.Three breakdowns within a few months, twice in December.

Tourists safe after drama at world's biggest observation wheel Published: Tuesday December 23, 2008

A power disruption left more than 100 passengers stranded above ground in the world's biggest observation wheel for about six hours on Tuesday, forcing some to abseil down to safety.

A few lowered themselves in a sling-like device on a rope from one of the observation capsules before the Singapore Flyer eventually began turning again to allow other trapped passengers to walk out, an AFP reporter witnessed.

Power was restored at about 11:11 pm (1511 GMT).

A 70-year-old woman complaining of dizziness, and a boy who vomited were taken to hospital, said Lieutenant Colonel N. Subhas, of the paramedic and fire service.

"We thought we were going to have to abseil out of the capsule. Of course we were getting fairly panicky about that," said Anna-Louise Allen, an Australian tourist who was trapped with her daughter Amelia, husband Syd, and five other people in one capsule.

A total of 173 passengers were aboard the wheel when a small electrical fire caused the stoppage, said Steven Yeo, general manager of the attraction which began operations early this year.

The power outage at about 5:00 pm is the fourth at the Flyer, Yeo said.

In earlier incidents power was back on within one hour, he told reporters.

"It is a very peculiar incident," Yeo said of the latest case, which is under investigation.

He said some trapped passengers were "a bit disturbed" by the experience. Ten were rescued using harnesses and the other 163 walked out when power returned, he said.

AFP reporters saw one passenger sitting in a sling-like device slowly lower herself about 50 metres (yards) down from the end of one observation capsule to a platform below the wheel.

When she was down safely, onlookers applauded.

At least three other people escaped from the same capsule, including a child brought down in the arms of a firefighter, reporters saw.

The wheel is 165 metres (545 feet) tall, 30 metres bigger than Britain's London Eye, said Great Wheel Corp, which built the Flyer.

Enough electricity was brought back to power air conditioning in the stuck capsules, and to enable the intercom system to function, a Flyer spokeswoman said.

"I was just worried about my baby," said an Indonesian tourist, who gave his name only as Aditya. He was travelling with his two children, aged 11 months and five years old.

Allen, the Australian visitor, said she saw workers in hard hats climbing the wheel while she and her family were trapped. Allen said she was "not sure" at the time whether they would emerge unharmed.

"It was great until it stopped, and when it stopped there was a lack of information," her husband said.

Meta Hartono, an Indonesian visitor, said trapped passengers resorted to urinating in plastic bags while they were hanging in the air. "I love Singapore but I don't think I'll come to the Flyer again," she said.

Yeo said the Flyer would remain closed at least until Thursday.

Unlike old-style Ferris wheel carriages that hang in the open air, the Singapore Flyer and other large observation wheels feature fixed "capsules."

The 28 sleek-looking capsules -- about the size of a city bus -- can hold up to 28 people, and passengers can walk around during the slowly-moving ride.

The Singapore Flyer, worth about 240 million Singapore dollars (171 million US), was a private venture backed mainly by German investors and built by Mitsubishi Corp and Takenaka Corp of Japan.

Great Wheel Corp is also building wheels in Beijing and Berlin which will ultimately edge out the Singapore Flyer as the world's biggest, the chairman of Singapore Flyer, Florian Bollen, said before the attraction opened.

Re: Singapore Flyer broke down, what happen if...

what happen if

1) a lady is having her heavy days

2) need to pee

3) having diarrhoe

4) need to catch a flight?

5) heart attack

so non of the 173 passengers are having such problems? then it is still not so bad, or lucky i would say.

But if look at it at another angle, those 173 passengers got a good deal.
A 20 minutes ride extended to 6 1/2 hour, inclusive of free food, drinks and some stuntman action for getting down the flyer.

QUESTION: DOESN'T THESE THINGS HAVE EMERGENCY POWER GENERATOR?..no?...someone forgot to install? or budget, not enough!:o
