Singapore Casinos

korea forbids its citizens to go to its casinos. Hk doesnt have casinos..taiwan, japan?

For most countries it is not a regulatory issue but an issue of not able to attract an investor large enough to build one. Notice that many are actually existing players who have started business some where else.

Knowledge and technology is important. Although immensely profitable, the gambling margin is actually quite small - 2 to 3 %. And from this you have to cover all your operating costs. You must have the technology to make sure there is no leakage and fraud which can be expensive. And you must be able to demonstrate to the authorities that they can collect gambling tax from you. It is all very technical.

If you cannot bring in the required number of gamblers, you can lose money. In many East Asian countries, small gambling dens are already in place. So some needs have already been satisfied. Casinos only advance the gambling experience up another level into entertainment. Las Vegas and Macau are very good examples.

If Singapore wishes to prosper from this, it is in the entertainment part that must be improved to give a total experience to bring in the top rollers. Today that part is a bit lame. You cannot use something else within the city to fill that gap. It has to be within the casinos or around the casinos.

Thanks for the excellent summary.

From what you surmised, I think it is not going to be easy for MBS and RWS for the next few years with the novelty wearing off, debt servicing, high operating costs, competition, expected bad economic situation in Asia, Europe and USA.

My take is to sell genting shares.

groupiers are changed so that fraud can be detered. odds are against the players, not against the house. other punters over stay due to 2 primary reasons: 1. greed (to win more), 2. recouping a loss (thinking they can beat the odds in the next round).

me don't fight with the casino, me just play to the game and try to reap the best of it :p:p:p

For a game like BJ, the croupier does not play against you alone. He plays against the whole table and he will maximize his winnings from the whole table. If he has already win enough he will not take any more risk and so should you. Understand this and be observant, your chance of taking home something is much improved.

but does the groupier have any choice? doesnt he play according to fixed rules?

As I've said, the solution is how to improve the overall experience. So far the casinos have not been focussing too much on this aspect. They should now.

On paper, there is entertainment at RWS but that is family entertainment. No doubt, a gambler can put his family at the Universal Studio or let them roam around the island but this is only one segment of the market.

How about the solo high roller. He can't be gambling all the time, in between he needs breaks (good quality breaks) and these should be readily accessible, nearby, because he will need to quickly get back to the gambling tables. To attract all segments of the market, there have to be, what the sales and marketing people say, product differentiation.

Their shares will languish until they can come out with something new or the global economy makes a sudden recovery and they will also be pulled up in the short term. On the longer term, they need to make changes to improve the total experience.

In line with this, I expect the Govt to loosen some rules and also liberalize some other restrictions and censors in the entertainment industry. They must if they wish to bring in big media houses and film makers, which I think is the next targeted engine of growth.

The croupier plays according to the game plan given by the casino but he has to make the judgment call.

You know what? There is another possibility why the casinos' profits have dropped. Frauds. Frauds committed by croupiers in cahoots with the gamblers. The casino owners must do their own investigation.

what judgement call can a croupier make?

i thought the rules are fixed..the croupier has to draw a card if he gets below certain points and has to stay at certain points...
