Decided to switch up my usual walking routine this evening - instead of going to the park, I headed to Marina Bay to catch the i Light festival. It was heartwarming to see so many families enjoying the vibrant displays and festive atmosphere. If you haven’t yet, do check it out during the school holidays!

It’s the Dragon Boat Festival!
The festival is a longstanding Chinese tradition. In Singapore, we have developed our own ways of celebrating together with other communities, as part of our diverse multicultural society. For those who are participating in dragon boat races this period - paddle hard and all the best! I hope everyone will also spend time with your family, neighbours and friends, and enjoy delicious rice dumplings (“bak zhang”) together. Nowadays they come in many variations, so you have a wider range of options to choose from!

Heading to Brunei and Malaysia for introductory visits to our neighbours. Over the coming months, I will be visiting other ASEAN capitals too. Singapore is committed to nurturing strong ties with fellow ASEAN states, to drive win-win outcomes, and mutual growth and progress.

Singapore and Brunei enjoy a special relationship, which predates the formal establishment of diplomatic ties between our two nations. Honoured to have a joint audience with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah and Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha this morning. I was also joined by several office-holders in my delegation including Ministers Vivian Balakrishnan, Desmond Lee, Grace Fu and MOS Rahayu Mahzam. We reaffirmed our special partnership, and our commitment to further strengthen cooperation in areas like food security, energy, and civil service exchanges.
This year is the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Brunei and Singapore. Through the last four decades, we have stood by each other through good times and bad. As two of the smallest countries in the region, we share similar perspectives across many strategic issues. I value the close links with Brunei and that’s why Brunei is my first stop in my introductory visits to Southeast Asian capitals. May our special relationship endure for many more generations to come!

Had a wonderful visit to Brunei! From a joint audience with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah and Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha to catching up with His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah and Her Royal Highness Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah, the day was filled with good discussions. It was a great opportunity to strengthen our enduring ties and explore collaborative opportunities for our nations. Here’s a recap of my day!

Lawrence met PM Anwar Ibrahim.

Lawrence Wong

·
I have met PM Anwar Ibrahim on previous occasions. But this is my first time engaging him in my new role. It was good to have a candid exchange of views, and establish a strong basis of mutual understanding and trust to take our bilateral ties forward.
We both agreed that it was crucial for us as PMs to set the right overall tone for cooperation, to guide our Ministers and officials to discuss issues in the right spirit, and pursue win-win outcomes. The more closely we cooperate, the more we expand our economic space and secure benefits for our peoples.
Malaysia and Singapore share enduring ties of culture, kinship and history. Our two economies have complementary strengths and there is much to gain by synergizing efforts especially through projects like the Johor-Singapore SEZ. I am confident our partnership can create many new opportunities to uplift our peoples, and keep our region competitive, vibrant and forward-looking.

Off to a good start to my series of introductory visits to ASEAN capitals. I had good and productive trips to Brunei and Malaysia, to reaffirm our friendships, and renew our longstanding ties with our Bruneian and Malaysian friends.
Singapore is a small and open economy, dependent on being plugged into the world to make a living. We will always need to work with like-minded partners, near and afar, to contribute to building a stable external environment. This is a crucial ingredient for the peace and prosperity enjoyed by Singaporeans.
A stable external environment will allow Singapore to prosper. This is why as PM, I will continue to pay special attention to growing Singapore’s global network of friends and lead our international engagements.
Many thanks to all our Bruneian and Malaysian friends for the warm hospitality towards me and my delegation.

PUTRAJAYA – Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has denied claims that Malaysia is considering recruiting teachers from Singapore to teach English.
He said the proposal, meant to be a volunteer programme, is aimed at boosting English proficiency and improving bilateral relations between Malaysia and Singapore.
“Listen first. Sometimes, the ‘three-minute experts’ will simply make (claims) on social media and all their facts are wrong,” said Mr Anwar.

“The assumption is that we are appointing English teachers from Singapore. That is wrong,” he said in his speech at the Madani Aspiration Gathering at Putrajaya International Convention Centre on June 14.
“Recently, I met with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and discussed several matters.
“(These included the possibility of) establishing an aid scheme from Singapore or getting volunteers, fully paid by the Singaporean Government, to go to rural areas, villages and the interior of Sabah and Sarawak to teach English,” he clarified.

On June 12, Mr Anwar and Mr Wong met to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations.

Mr Anwar said that he was subsequently criticised in certain quarters for disrespecting local teachers by trying to bring in teachers from across the Causeway.
“This is purely to strengthen ties between our countries,” he said.

Lawrence wishes Happy Father's Day to all the incredible dads.

Lawrence Wong

While studying in the US, I learned to ride a motorcycle. I was initially nervous to tell my parents about it. But when I eventually did so, my late father surprised me with his response. He showed me an old photo of himself on his scooter and shared his own biking adventures!
That moment taught me that sometimes our parents are more understanding than we think. Making the effort to foster open communication, and to spend quality time with one another makes all the difference in strengthening family bonds.
Happy Father's Day to all the incredible dads who support and inspire us!

Selamat Hari Raya Haji to our Muslim friends!
Over 900 Singaporean Muslims are currently in Saudi Arabia to perform the Haj. I wish all of them a meaningful Haj and a safe journey home.
Hari Raya Haji or Aidiladha is also a time when Muslims perform the korban rites. This act symbolises devotion, gratitude and compassion. It also fosters camaraderie and unity as the korban meat is distributed to those in need.
To all celebrating Hari Raya Aidiladha today, may you have a blessed and wonderful time with your family and loved ones.
Semoga sambutan Hari Raya Aidiladha anda ceria bersama orang-orang tersayang.

Cambodia was one of the earliest countries to recognise Singapore after our independence. Singapore was one of the early believers of Cambodia's potential, and is now among the top investors in the country.
On Tuesday, I welcomed Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet to the Istana where we discussed ways to expand our cooperation.
Like me, PM Manet has recently assumed leadership responsibility. He has set out a comprehensive strategy to make Cambodia a high-income nation by 2050. Singapore will do our part to support Cambodia’s development priorities under this strategy.
I look forward to working closely with PM Manet to secure Singapore and Cambodia’s future in an uncertain world.

Happy to welcome Communist Party of China Central Committee Political and Legal Affairs Commission Secretary Chen Wenqing to Singapore. Secretary Chen is here to co-chair the Singapore-China Social Governance Forum with SM Teo Chee Hean, where we discuss ways to address common issues in our societies.
China and Singapore have a close and multifaceted relationship. Most people are aware of our economic links. But we also cooperate in other areas including in law enforcement, as well as the legal and judicial fields. Our two countries differ in size and other characteristics, but there are also important similarities. That’s why we both find it useful to share our experiences and ideas for social harmony and cohesion, and to learn from each other.
Wishing Secretary Chen and his delegation a fruitful visit and looking forward to continued productive exchanges in the future.

Lawrence congratulates Farhanna Farid.

Lawrence Wong

·
There are hidden talents in all of us, waiting to be uncovered and nurtured.
Farhanna Farid discovered her talent in powerlifting by accident, when she was at the gym with her partner and his friends. They decided to try how much each one could lift. Farhanna joined them and deadlifted 140kg without breaking a sweat!
From then on, she has started training competitively. And she has been breaking records and winning competitions along the way. Earlier this week, she set a new deadlift world record of 209kg in the Women’s 52kg class at the World Open Classic Powerlifting Championships!
We all have our own abilities and strengths. I hope Farhanna’s story inspires us to follow our talents, work hard at what we are good at, and strive to be the best possible version of ourselves.
Congratulations Farhanna! Thank you for blazing the trail, and flying our flag high!

Growing up in Marine Parade, I would take a bus to get to the nearest MRT station. I wished back then that there could be an MRT station nearer to home. Now that wish has come true!
The new Thomson-East Coast Line Stage 4 (TEL4) will benefit many residents, and make commuting even more accessible and convenient!
The TEL is not the only new line. Over the decade, we can look forward to other new lines and stations all over the island. Together, we can make Singapore the best home for all of us
