Siglap

That guy was filthy
rich and to access his mansion, you can go by Nallur Road.
Now, the mansion is long gone.

Actually you can still see the remnants of the curtain wall around his mansion if you are on marine parade road at lagoon view....you are right a lot of these mansions are all gone .... a reminder of the granduer of these villas all you have to do is look at The Duchess next to St Pat's. that whole condo estate stood on one villa's land.

I rode from my home in Tanjong Rhu along Meyer Road, Amber Road, East Coast Road, up Siglap Hill.... then a screaming descent down Fidelio Street and up again.. then back along what has now become New Upper Changi Road and Frankel Ave back to East Coast Road and then home again.

You so old meh? And local too, lah.:)

Good old summer time ~ Susan Lim.

Susan Lim and The Crescendos bring back so many fond memories.

Hi Mel, would you know where to get CDs or LPs of the old singapore bands? i would love to listen to original singapore made music. even if its from 30-40 years ago.

The shoreline during the Japanese occupation is without Marine Parade or East Coast Park.

One of the places that the Japs killed and buried Chinese was Lucky Heights. It was a hill then and when
the hill was dug to get soil for Marine Parade reclamation, many many bones were found. Lucky Heights
is formerly a burial ground of killed Chinese.

Alamak! Uncle living just on top of remaining Lucky Height's hill. Must becareful walking there at late night.

You are correct.

On top of the hill near where Evergreen Gardens/Evergreen Ave are located, the old timer Malays believed that there was a cobra snake nest.

I don't think you can get them now, but most of Susan Lim's songs are available on Youtube.

Besides Susan Lim, you may want to listen to the following songs by our local talents which made it to the top of the local chart on Youtube:

S'pore cowboy ~ Matthew Tan & The Mandarins.

Sad movie ~ Sakura.

Sausilito ~ Western Union Band.

Don't play that song ~ Keith Locke & The Quests.

My lonely heart ~ The Thunderbirds.

I know ~ Naomi & The Boys.

Shanty ~ The Quests.

if you refer to Post #77 in this thread, it was mentioned in last sentence of some National Heritage article that there were multiple killing sites including specifically in Evergreen Avenue, which is part of the Lucky Heights Estate area.

More Discoveries
Further investigations uncovered forty more mass war graves, off Evergreen Avenue in Siglap. Then, another two were found at 10.5 milestone Changi Road, where, Mr. Ng Aik Huan of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce claimed that more than 1,000 people were machine-gunned and buried here.

The Uncle on the left of the ray wearing the pouch was the one who caught this giant monster..
Bedok Jetty old timers called this Uncle the Bedok Jetty legend.. He's in his late 60s or early 70s now.. This giant sting ray that he caught at Bedok Jetty back in early 80s weight more than 120kg.. Many feel thats the record for a sting ray caught there.. Till now, no anglers have managed to beat his record..

The legendary Uncle on the left looks like a young Jackie Chan

Oh yes, I remember Palace cinema tea-dance which was held in the Continental nightclub and that was where they featured Sakura Teng during the night showtime.

Those were the days.

During the war, St Pat was a hospital.
The class rooms on the ground floor of the
old building are very eerie.
Further up Siglap centre there is a Poh Heng court,
is it at Palm Dr? Does this apartment building
belongs to Poh Heng Jewellery?

Hey boss.

I heard you ride bikes without the seat.

Hence the "screaming descent down Fidelio" happy ending.

:D

Death of Susan Lim

In 1970, Susan Lim was 22 years old and engaged to be married to John Chan York Lee. After completing her final university examinations, Lim went on a holiday to Malaysia
with her fiance and some friends and relatives.

On 8th February 1970, while at a beach in Kemaman, Trengganu, Susan was swept away by strong waves despite attempts by her fiance to hold on to her. The body of Lau
Kheng Khuang, another member of the party killed in the accident was recovered, but Susan's body was never found.

Shortly after the accident, the National University of Singapore awarded Susan Lim a Bachelor of Arts honours degree in absentia.

Unlike other bands of the 1960s that reunited over the years for nostalgia and charity events, the Crescendos never regrouped as they felt that Susan Lim could not be replaced.

You may wish to know that this Uncle (then a very young man) was working with Susan's father Lim Teng Law in the late fifties in the Ministry of Education then in Palmer Road and Kay Siang Road. I believe that he was also a teacher in RI and after his secondment to MOE became a Principal. So sad about his daughter.

In this Rollin Good Times video hosted by Douglas Oliverio and Lauretta Alabons, they paid tribute to Susan Lim and the surviving Crescendoes. Susan's Mum was at the taping and must have been so painful to see her old photos and listen to her songs after all this years .....

Do you guys have any more details or pictures of the shophouses at the corner of woo mun chew and east coast road? I am compliing some details of the changes in the siglap area and saw this greenish shophouses. Horrible colour but very noticeable. Is there any history of any significant in this area besides the barber shop? I grew up in the siglap area as well. Thanks.
