SIA Youth Scholarship
This particular scholarship scheme was started around 20 years ago by the Singapore Ministry of Education in collaboration with Singapore Airlines. Each year they select 25-40 students from all over India after selection tests and interviews. Selection is strictly merit based and only for Indian citizens. Applications are invited through advertisements in most newspapers, usually in June.
Selected SIA Youth Scholars attend the top Junior Colleges (JCs) in Singapore pursuing courses in the Arts or Sciences. Scholars were assigned only to the top 5 JCs until recent years when this policy was changed to include other JCs as well. Academics and other facilities are top-notch, giving scholars ample opportunities to excel in any area they desire. Boarding facilities are good and located close to JCs; Indian vegetarian food is also catered.
The curriculum prepares students for the Sinagpore-Cambridge GCE 'A' Level examinations. Great emphasis is laid on co-curricular activities. The progress of scholars is monitored, indeed, monthly reports are written by tutors.
The options available after completion of this scholarship are numerous. One may choose to have further education overseas - countries like USA, UK and Australia are the most popular. Scholarships for undergraduate studies in NTU and NUS are readily available. Various other scholarships to study in Sinagpore and abroad are also offered by Sinagpore companies and government bodies. One may of course, choose to return to India as well.
