Shocking!!! NEA BUYS 26 ah pek looking bikes for 2.2k Each

Ranting on New Paper of this forum is useless. Just get a whistle and go to CAD and blow as loud as you can. Maybe they'll hear you.

It seems my account is not working properly and giving duplicate posts when i only click once.

Kingrant, these could possibly be Chinese bikes afterall, you expect the Brits to still make bikes now? Fucking NEA should spend just a few thousand dollars to attend the Canton Fair (China Import and Export Fair that happens twice a year) and get bikes as good as these cost this fair features many factories making bikes for foreigners.

100% made in China.......even top end bicycles like Pinarello, Litespeed and Cervelo are either made in China or Taiwan.

They simply cannot manufacture in their countries of origin because of high labour cost.

Before you type, Nparks and NEA belongs to different ministry. Those incompetent idiots who bought the bikes are Nparks which is under MND under $8 Khaw.

Was thinking who would spot it. I was waiting for this so that I can bring up about the female staff fired for discovering anomalies at MND under MBT watch years ago. SLA is under MND of course. Because it smells of NKF and CHC repeat but not looked into.

brompTon folding bicycles ARE made in the UK. I have one and bought it when I was on holiday in london.

It's amazing how self-righteous keyboard warriors post stuff without references or some basic googling.

Pinarello, Trek, etc usually make their top end frames at home while subcontracting the cheaper stuff to Taiwan or China.

You shocked at the price of about S$700?

Cannot be what, someone or somewhere decided to buy more than 2 dozens of these foldies at more than S$2200 per piece or did they pay in rupees instead?:D

Re: Why are Folding Bicycles so expensive in Singapore ?

Not surprised TS is shocked!

You can find newspaper advertisement selling 16 inch wheel at $200 a piece retail price. No tender required.

Why are prices so high ?......................

Nowadays, people generally want to buy "quality" and equate it with price. You can get a folding bike from a littel over a hundred upto a few thousand dollars, depending on the "quality."

Agree with you that its kinda expensice. When I was fifteen years old, me and some friends went to steal bicycles. We stole seven in one day. Problem - where the fuck to keep them?

Cheers!

$700.00 you're shock? than means you are still new and very shallow!
The Tyrell Japanese Titanium 20 inches wheel with Durace will easily cost you
more than $5K!

A folding 20inch Bike Friday from US and Alex Moulton from UK easily cost more than $5K
too!!

So you want cheaper bike with basket infront go Carrefour or NTUC get Aleoca for $65.00/$99.00
you saved a TON! Your choice!

Similar foldable bikes selling at $89 available at NTUC. But please do not expect the same quality for such cheap prices.

The typical SG mindset of wanting 'cheap', 'good' is as bad as the disgusting Kiasu mentality. CANNOT afford, don't buy and learn to live without!!!!!

This is the best quote I heard.

$8 Msian Cow defends NParks $2.2k Bike

Khaw defends NParks' purchase of $2,200 foldable bicycle

<!-- CONTENT NEWS: start -->National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan has stated via his blog that he supports the National Parks Board's (NParks) decision to purchase Brompton foldable bikes for its staff.

Some Singaporeans had questioned why the purchase for the 26 bicycles - each
<!-- End Related Links -->
Mr Khaw wrote in a blog post on Wednesday that he had asked NParks for the rationale for the purchase. He said NParks cited staff productivity as the main reason for the purchase: "Providing staff with bikes was thought to be a simple and effective way to raise staff productivity as it enables the officer to cover more ground and do more inspections within the same time."

NParks officers in the Park Connector Division cover between 30 to 40km in their daily rounds.

=> Cut the fuzzy crap and tell us the distance per person.

Mr Khaw added that a foldable bicycle was chosen because such bicycles "would eliminate the need for an office van to transport the bikes and the staff to the areas of their daily rounds". The NParks staff would also be able to carry them onto buses and trains where necessary.

=> And strain the public transport further?

He also said that Brompton was picked because only one vendor responded to the tender with a bid price lower than the listed retail price of the same bicycle.

=> You believe this crap of the response by only one vendor? Tell us the RFQ was. And it is justfiable to buy just because it is below the listed price and the fact that this is way too high to pay for a bicycle? Did not SAM show the listed price is lower than $2.2k? Utter BULLSHIT! It is scary how the FAP squanders away SGs' blood and sweat money!

While a Brompton bike costs more than foldable bicycles with similar specifications, Mr Khaw said cyclists told him the bike was durable and would require less maintenance after heavy usage.

=> Just on the basis of hearsay?

He concluded: "It looks like NParks has bought the right equipment. However, it also looks like NParks might have gotten a better deal if there was greater participation in this quotation."

According to the Lianhe Zaobao report where the NParks purchase was first reported, a police officer's bicycle costs about $1,000 while Singapore Post's postmen use bicycles which cost about $500.
