Inter Milan end Gasperini reign

Inter Milan have dismissed coach Gian Piero Gasperini after a poor start to the new season.

The Italian giants suffered their fourth defeat in five official games with a shock 3-1 reverse at newly-promoted Novara on Tuesday night and Gasperini, who replaced Leonardo in the summer, has been let go. A statement from Inter read: "Inter announces that today's [Wednesday] training session has been carried out by Daniele Bernazzani and Giuseppe Baresi.

"The club wishes to thank Gian Piero Gasperini for the effort shown during his tenure and manifests its true disappointment for the interruption of the relationship with the coach." Inter president Massimo Moratti questioned Gasperini's leadership after Tuesday's 3-1 Serie A defeat at Novara.

He said: "When you lose in the manner that we did against Novara, there is nothing positive to take from that. "Gasperini did not seem to be in control." Gasperini, meanwhile, denied he had lost the backing of his players. "Moratti has declared that I don't have the support of the players?," he questioned. "The rapport with the group is optimum.

If the problem is the coach, then it has an easy solution. "If, instead, as I believe, the problem is another one, then we must resolve it through work." Inter have yet to announce who will replace Gasperini. They travel to Bologna on Saturday before taking on CSKA Moscow in Russia in the Champions League four days later.

Serie A wrap: Genoa move top, Milan struggles persist

22 September 2011

12427262650.jpg

Genoa climbed to equal top in Serie A on Wednesday, while AC Milan and Juventus were held to draws.

Genoa had a first-half brace from Rodrigo Palacio and a late strike from Kevin Constant to thank for their 3-0 win over Catania at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

The result pulled Alberto Malesani's side level with Juventus and Udinese on seven points after three games.

Champions Milan remain winless after three games following a 1-1 draw with Udinese at the San Siro.

Midfielder Stephan El Shaarawy scored an equaliser for Milan just after the hour mark to cancel out Antonio Di Natale's opener for the visitors.

Juventus took the lead against Bologna after 30 minutes through a Mirko Vucinic goal.

But the visitors in Turin responded with a strike from Daniele Portanova to secure a 1-1 draw and register their first point of the season.

Lazio came from behind to defeat Cesena 2-1, with Hernanes cancelling out Adrian Mutu's opener before Miroslav Klose nabbed a winner for Edoardo Raja's men.

Chievo Verona had a Davide Moscardelli goal in the 71st to thank for their 1-0 home over Napoli, while a Stevan Jovetic brace guided Fiorentina to a 3-0 win over Parma at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Two goals from Argentine striker German Denis steered Atalanta to a 2-1 win at Lecce, and Palermo held off a late Cagliari fightback to post a 3-2 win at the Stadio Renzo Barbera.

Serie A wrap: Milan, Inter notch first wins

25 September 2011

12427263550.jpg

AC Milan and cross-town rivals Inter both recorded their first wins of the Serie A season on Saturday.

Claudio Ranieri made a dream start to life as Inter Milan boss as they struck twice late on in a 3-1 win at Bologna.

Midfielder Esteban Cambiasso set up Giampaolo Pazzini for the opener in the first half, but his goal was cancelled out from the spot by Bologna winger Gaston Ramirez after the break.

Diego Milito and Lucio then tipped the scale in Inter's favour with strikes in the final 10 minutes of the game to secure the three points.

Bologna defender Archimede Morleo was sent off after dragging down Milito in the area and the Argentine stepped up to convert the penalty in the 81st minute, before Lucio headed home the sealer soon after.

Meanwhile, veteran Clarence Seedorf struck the winner as AC Milan also collected their first three points of the season with a 1-0 victory over bottom-placed Cesena.

The Dutch midfielder opened the scoring in the fifth minute as Massimiliano Allegri's side moved into eighth.

Elsewhere, Napoli and Fiorentina played out a scoreless draw.

Serie A wrap: Juventus, Udinese remain at summit
25 September 2011

12427263720.jpg

Juventus remain on top of the Serie A after coming from behind to salvage a point in a 1-1 draw at Catania on Sunday.

Antonio Conte's side travelled to Catania undefeated in three matches, and they continued that run with a well-earned point at the Stadio Angelo Massimino.

It was the hosts who had the best of the early stages, however, taking the lead on 22 minutes through Gonzalo Bergessio.

The Argentine converted compatriot Alejandro Gomez's assist, but Catania's lead was cancelled out by Serbian Milos Krasic four minutes after half-time.

Udinese are level on points and goal difference with Juventus, behind only on goals scored, after they drew 0-0 at Cagliari, while Lazio and Palermo also played out a goalless stalemate.

Chievo climbed to third after a 2-1 home win over Genoa, with goals to Sergio Pellissier and Davide Moscardelli in the last 20 minutes - the latter coming in the second minute of stoppage time - sealing a comeback win for the hosts.

Atalanta defeated Novara also 2-1, with Ezequiel Schelotto and Luca Cigarini on the score sheet, while a second-half double from Emanuele Calaio helped Siena to a 3-0 home win over Lecce.

And a Pablo Osvaldo header in the 50th minute helped Roma climb to 10th place on the table after a 1-0 defeat of Parma.

Moggi has Inter in Calciopoli crosshairs

Luciano Moggi's legal team are to reveal evidence at the current Calciopoli trial which they claim shows an official being told to favour Inter Milan and not Juventus.

Moggi has been banned from football for life and is being tried in a criminal court for his involvement in a match fixing scandal involving his former club Juve.

However, 10 days ago Moggi said he would bring to the court's attention a transcript of "the [phone] call that will change everything" when the court holds its latest hearing.

Tuttosport have published the transcript of the phone call which they report as being between former referee designator Paolo Bergamo and ex-referee Paolo Rodomonti.

The pair were said to be speaking just before the Inter - Juventus clash of 2004 which ended 2-2 with Bergamo appearing to pressure Rodomonti into favouring Inter.

At the time Juventus were leading the Serie A standings.

Bergamo told Rodomonti: "There is a 15 point gap between the teams, make sure you are well prepared psychologically.

"Play your game and if I am to be honest, if you have any doubts then think about the team behind, not the one in front, do you understand me?

"This is between me and you. You know how hard it is to reach the top and if you fall down then it will be silly for you. Be intelligent."

The court hearing resumes on Tuesday.

Cavani ruled out for Inter Milan clash

Napoli will have to do without star striker Edinson Cavani in their upcoming Serie A clash against Inter Milan.

The Uruguayan was injured during the second half of Napoli's 2-0 Champions League win against Villarreal on Tuesday, and has lost the race to be fit in time to face Inter, according to reports from La Corriere dello Sport.

The striker scored his Napoli's crucial second goal to kill off the La Liga side, but paid the price as tests on Wednesday morning showed he suffered a sprained ankle.

Reports further indicate that the 24-year-old may not be ready for selection for at least two weeks, as the full extent of his injury is still unknown.

This will frustrate Uruguay, as he is expected to miss their 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Paraguay.

Inter deny Lavezzi speculation

Inter Milan chief Ernesto Paolillo has quashed rumours that they are planning to sign Napoli forward Ezequiel Lavezzi in the summer.

Lavezzi is valued at €32 million by the San Paolo-based club and is currently an integral part of their lethal strikeforce that includes Edinson Cavani and Marek Hamsik.

When Goran Pandev was loaned to Napoli for a season in the summer, it was speculated that the Macedonia striker was to be used as a makeweight or replacement in a move for the highly-rated Lavezzi.

However, Paolillo has rubbished the notions suggesting the motive behind the loan, though he is coy on their interest in Lavezzi.

"Is the Pandev deal linked with a move for Lavezzi? I refuse to comment on that. The Pandev deal was borne out of excellent relations between the clubs regardless of Lavezzi," he told Radio CRC.

The Nerrazzuri are currently 16th in the Serie A with four points from four matches after gaining their first league win last weekend.

They will host Napoli at San Siro this Saturday, and Paolillo is hoping that the Milanese side will be able to pick up points against their in-form opponents.

"Our objective is to always do well in every competition so we can get to the very end. We know it will be hard, but we are trying," he said.

Serie A wrap: Inter thumped, Roma on rise

2 October 2011

12427265460.jpg

Napoli have inflicted new Inter Milan boss Claudio Ranieri with his first loss in charge of the side, courtesy of a 3-0 thrashing on Saturday.

The hosts at the San Siro had it all before them when Nigerian midfielder Joel Obi was sent off late in the first half, and Hugo Campagnaro pounced on Marek Hamsik's saved penalty to put Napoli ahead.

Second-half goals to Christian Maggio and Hamsik added more pain for Inter, leaving the powerhouse club flailing in 16th spot in the league.

Maggio scored Napoli's second when Inter defender Yuto Nagatomo tried to guide the ball back to goalkeeper Julio Cesar, but his lack of protection left his goalkeeper stranded and the Italian midfielder got in behind to score his first goal in five months.

Hamsik added another with 15 minutes remaining, slotting past Cesar in a one-on-one situation to seal the points for Walter Mazzarri's men.

Earlier, Ranieri's former club Roma dealt promoted Atalanta their first loss of the campaign in a 3-1 home triumph at the Stadio Olimpico.

First-half goals to former Barcelona starlet Bojan and Argentine-born striker Pablo Osvaldo had Roma 2-0 up at the interval, but the Serie B champions scraped their way back into the contest via a German Denis goal three minutes into the second half.

Atalanta's resistance ended, however, when Fabio Simplicio reinstated Roma's two-goal buffer, sending his side into fourth on the table.

Atalanta have three wins and a draw to their name but are in 15th spot on four points, having begun the season with six-point penalty due to match-fixing offences.

Ranieri blames referee for Inter loss

After a 3-0 defeat to Napoli, irate Inter Milan manager Claudio Ranieri blamed referee Gianluca Rocchi for "ruining" the game.

A red card for Joel Obi and a dubious penalty decision in the 43rd minute helped Walter Mazzarri's side on their way to all three points as Claudio Ranieri saw his side lose for the first time since he took charge.

Marek Hamsik missed the spot-kick but Hugo Campagnaro scored the rebound and further goals from Christian Maggio and Hamsik in the second half earned Napoli all three points.

The result took them two points clear at the top and left Inter just one point above the bottom three.

The ex-Chelsea manager was fuming after the game about being sent off for his protestations, and according to reports from Tuttomercatoweb, slammed: "[Gianluca] Rocchi was not good enough tonight, as Obi's first yellow was non-existent and the second one was outside the box".

"He ruined a potentially fascinating match and also our first-half performance."

The Italian tried not to make a fuss though, and gave commiserations to his men for their efforts.

"Complaining is not my forte, and I have only done so a few times in the past in 20 years, but I have enough experience to know whether a referee is having a good or bad day," said Ranieri.

"The boys did not deserve to be punished in this way. I was sent off because I complained too much, but we are men and it is normal to be frustrated when you are penalised by the referee", he concluded.

Happy birthday for Mazzarri

2 October 2011

12427265550.jpg

Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri has hailed his side's 3-0 win over Inter Milan on Saturday as the perfect 50th birthday present.

Napoli had goals from Hugo Campagnaro, Christian Maggio and Marek Hamsik to thank for the win that sent them two points clear of Juventus and Udinese on top of Serie A, although those sides have a game in hand.

Inter will be ruing the controversial decision to send off Joel Obi for his challenge on Maggio with five minutes to go in the first half.

Not only did the decision leave Inter a man short for over a half, but Campagnaro slotted home the rebound after Julio Cesar had saved Hamsik's penalty.

On the day he turned 50, Mazzarri said he was not bothered to be the recipient of such good fortune and insisted his side has had their fair share of bad luck as well.

"I thank my players for having given me the greatest birthday gift I could've asked for," Mazzarri said.

"I think we played well and in terms of overall performance we deserved the win tonight."

"Incidents do happen in football and I said the same last season when we conceded a penalty and then lost against Milan."

"We were denied a clear penalty against Fiorentina last week, so mistakes happen to everyone over the course of a campaign."

Despite their good early season form, Mazzarri said it was far too early to be thinking about a Serie A title.

"The team has grown a lot this season and has more character," he said.

"Playing in the Europa League helped us a lot, while now we are learning even more from facing Barcelona, Manchester City and other top clubs."

"The squad has had a rapid climb and there are youngsters who have reached maturity like Pocho (Ezequiel) Lavezzi and Marek Hamsik, while it's a pleasure to watch others such as Paolo Cannavaro and Salvatore Aronica."

"The Scudetto? We'll take it one game at a time."

Serie A wrap: Juve topple Milan, Udinese cruise

3 October 2011

12427265720.jpg

Late goals were the difference in Juventus' 2-0 victory over AC Milan in their Serie A clash on Sunday, while Udinese won by the same score. Juve were heading for their third draw in as many league fixtures, before Claudio Marchisio willed the ball into the net after being played through on goal in the 87th minute.

The goal owed a little to Daniel Bonera's attempted clearance off Marchisio, but it was neat interplay as Juventus piled forward that put Milan's defence under pressure. ilan's Kevin Prince-Boateng was shown a second yellow card two minutes later to heap more misery on Massimiliano Allegri's men.

Marchisio then added another from range in the second minute of injury time to top off a fine win for the Bianconeri, sending them equal-top with Udinese on 11 points.

Udinese enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 win over Bologna at the Stadio Communale Friuli. Francesco Guidolin's side continue to fly high and they were convincing winners at home to the winless Bologna. Defender Mehdi Benatia broke the deadlock on 29 minutes and evergreen striker Antonio Di Natale struck a second-half penalty in the win.

Elsewhere, Palermo maintained their perfect home record with a 2-0 win over Siena. Giulio Migliaccio headed home the opener in the first half before Palermo were reduced to 10 men when defender Federico Balzaretti picked up a second yellow card. Luca Rossettini was sent off for Siena late on, and Abel Hernandez struck a 90th-minute penalty.

Lazio struck late to down hosts Fiorentina 2-1, after being forced to come back from behind to earn a second away win of the season. Alessio Cerci had given Fiorentina an eighth-minute lead, before Brazilian midfielder Hernanes equalised in the first half. It was left to German striker Miroslav Klose to head home the winner seven minutes from time.

Meanwhile, Catania and Novara played out a thrilling 3-3 draw. Centre-back Nicola Legrottaglie and Francesco Lodi struck on either side of Marco Rigoni's 49th-minute equaliser from the penalty spot to give Catania a 2-1 lead away from home. But Rigoni set up Japanese striker Takayuki Morimoto to head home an equaliser and Novara were ahead five minutes from time when Jeda netted. It was not to be the end of the drama, however, as Alejandro Gomez earned Catania a point in the first minute of stoppage time.

Parma have returned to winning ways after soundly beating Genoa 3-1. Sebastian Giovinco was on the scoresheet twice in the first half and Stefano Morrone made it 3-0 as Parma broke their run of two consecutive losses, despite Argentine Rodrigo Palacio's consolation penalty late on.

Lecce's dreadful start to the season continued as they suffered a 2-0 loss to Cagliari, who had Thiago Ribeiro and Davide Biondini net. Elsewhere, Cesena picked up their first point of the season in a 0-0 draw against Chievo.

Totti struggling to make Rome derby

Roma captain Francesco Totti is a doubt for the city derby at Lazio on October 16 after the club confirmed he has strained a thigh muscle.

The 35-year-old was substituted during Saturday's 3-1 win against Atalanta.

A statement from Roma read: "Francesco Totti underwent a scan which revealed a muscular injury in his right thigh.

"The player's condition will be evaluated in the next few days."

Totti, who has yet to score for Roma this season, is expected to be sidelined for at least 15 days.

Roma lie level on eight points with Lazio after five games played in Serie A.
