Liverpool, Spurs, Inter fighting for Lucas

Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and Inter Milan will have to duke it out to try to sign Sao Paolo midfielder Lucas.

The 19-year-old, who shares the same moniker as Liverpool's current defensive midfielder, is attracting interest from Europe's elite after some sterling performances for Sao Paolo. The attacking midfielder is coveted by the trio of clubs, but according to reports in talkSPORT, Kenny Dalglish is planning to pull the Brazillian card on the young star, as he is often paired with namesake Lucas Leiva during international games for the Selacao.

Inter is trying to beat their rivals to the punch by putting in a £15 million bid the next transfer window, but Sao Paolo are not keen to let Lucas leave, as he is playing on his second full season in their first team. Former Liverpool player Phil Thompson was pleased at how proactive the Reds have been in bringing in top talent to the Merseyside club, saying to Liverpoolfc.tv:"I like the way the transfer business has been done, going back to January as well, a lot of business has been conducted without too much press interference or people knowing too much about it.

"It's been done in a very Liverpool-like way and I'm extremely pleased for Kenny Dalglish and Damien Comolli for what they've achieved. You have to take your hats off to Fenway Sports Group as well who have dug deep. "Over the last couple of years the strength in depth hasn't been there. It's said in football you're only as good as what you've got on the bench and that's fair. "You need a good squad to get you through a season and our squad has now been strengthened with different qualities of player. We now have a fantastic squad to worry most teams."

Excitement as Serie A renews hostilities

AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic believes his team will still be the side to beat in Serie A this season.

The Rossoneri open the 2011-12 campaign on Friday night at home to Lazio. The first round of Serie A games were postponed after the players went on strike but the league will finally get underway after the Lega Serie A and the Players' Union signed a new collective bargaining agreement this week. "We cannot wait to start the season," said Ibrahimovic. "I believe we are still favourites to win the Scudetto.

"With respect to last season, we have strengthened our team and we are much stronger than last year." Milan signed defenders Philippe Mexes and Taye Taiwo this summer and also brought in midfielders Alberto Aquilani and Antonio Nocerino. The Rossoneri, who finished ahead of Inter last term to clinch their first Scudetto since 2004, got their season off to a great start by beating the Nerazzurri to lift the Italian Supercup last month.

Gianpiero Gasperini's Inter travel to La Favorita to face Palermo on Sunday evening. Diego Forlan is set to make his Serie A debut against the Sicilian outfit. The Uruguay forward joined the Italian giants from Atletico Madrid shortly after Inter sold Samuel Eto'o to Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala. Juventus entertain Parma in Turin on Sunday hoping to prove their worth to new coach Antonio Conte.

The Bianconeri, who will not play in Europe this season, are boosted by the arrival of forward Mirko Vucinic from Roma. Two teams that could present Milan and Inter with fierce competition are Napoli and Roma. The clubs have bolstered their squads in the transfer market. Former Udinese star Gokhan Inler is one of Napoli's 13 signings.

Napoli visit Cesena on Saturday while Roma, who are coached by Luis Enrique, begin the season at home to Cagliari without top summer signing Erik Lamela. The Argentinian midfielder is sidelined with an ankle injury. Fiorentina entertain Bologna in Florence, in the same stadium where Italy beat Slovenia 1-0 on Tuesday night to secure a place in Euro 2012.

Udinese begin life without Alexis Sanchez when they travel to Lecce on Sunday. The Chilean winger scored 12 times in 31 games to help Udinese finish fourth last term but moved to Barcelona this summer in a £23m transfer deal. Siena, who were one of the three teams that gained promotion to the top flight, make the journey to Sicily to face Catania.

Novara will play their first Serie A game in 55 years when they square off against Chievo in Verona. Atalanta, another club that returns to the top flight having finished first in Serie B, take on Genoa at the Luigi Ferraris stadium.

Serie A: AC Milan 2 Lazio 2

10 September 2011

12427259790.jpg

AC Milan failed to mark their Serie A title defence with an opening-day victory after only managing to draw 2-2 with Lazio at the San Siro.
The visitors took a shock lead with goals from new arrivals Miroslav Klose and Djibril Cisse on Friday, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Antonio Cassano ensured Milan did not begin the new campaign with a whimper.

Alberto Aquilani, arguably a surprise inclusion in Milan's starting XI, was gifted the opportunity to mark his debut with a goal after Ibrahimovic acutely played him in one-on-one with Albano Bizzarri, but the Argentine stopper blocked his effort.
Lazio began to pile the pressure on their northern Italian counterparts, and it proved fruitful as ex-Bayern Munich star Klose opened the scoring for his side, capping his debut with a sublime finish on 12 minutes.

Stefano Mauri floated a curling ball into his path, and the German hitman collected it magnificently, showing great footwork to weave his way around Alessandro Nesta and Thiago Silva in the box and coolly drive his shot past Christian Abbiati.
Indeed, it got worse for the Scudetto holders only six minutes later, as Cisse made it 2-0 by meeting another of Mauri's impressively pinpoint crosses from the right, and powering a bullet header past the helpless Abbiati in the Milan goal.
The champions responded on 29 minutes, as Ibrahimovic opened his account for the new season with a simple tap-in after fantastic build-up play from Aquilani, whose visionary first-time through-ball released Cassano and he expertly drilled the ball hard and low into the Swede's path. Cassano showed his predatory instinct in front of goal to grab an equaliser for the Rossoneri on 33 minutes; Aquilani again featured in the build-up, whipping in the assist from the corner flag.

The second half offered far less invention and entertainment in comparison to the frantic first 45 minutes, as both teams took their foot off the pedal, content to maintain a slower tempo for the remainder of the match and much to the disappointment of the fans at San Siro.

Serie A wrap: Juve off to flying start, Cagliari shock Roma

12 September 2011

12427260310.jpg

Ten-man Juventus made the perfect start to life in their new stadium with a 4-1 win over Parma in Serie A action, while Cagliari shocked Roma. Juventus Arena was buzzing when new signing Stephan Lichtsteiner scored the opener after 17 minutes. Andrea Pirlo provided plenty of drive from midfield and could prove to be a valuable acquisition after leaving AC Milan in the off-season.

The 32-year-old provided the first assist before goals to Simone Pepe and Arturo Vidal made it 3-0 for the hosts. Pirlo set up Claudio Marchisio for a fourth before Paolo De Ceglie was red-carded for the hosts. Former Juventus winger Sebastian Giovinco added a consolation penalty in stoppage time to make it 4-1. The goal was his fourth against his former club since going out on loan to Parma last year.

Cagliari stunned Roma with a 2-1 away win at the Stadio Olimpico. Daniele Conti put the visitors ahead on 61 minutes before Moestafa El Kabir added a second in injury time. It was the worst possible start for new coach Luis Enrique, the only consolation for him a Daniele De Rossi strike after Francesco Totti's free kick some six minutes into stoppage time.

Roma showed off their bounty of new signings with Maarten Stekelenburg, Gabriel Heinze, Jose Angel, Miralem Pjanic, Bojan Krkic and Pablo Osvaldo all starting. But their off-season spending failed to pay immediate dividends and Enrique will now have plenty of questions following his side's first-up failure.

Udinese started their season on a positive note with early goals to Dusan Basta and Antonio Di Natale enough to gift them the three points away to Lecce. Meanwhile, Fiorentina put two past Bologna at home to post their first victory. Alessio Cerci opened their account on 20 minutes before Alberto Gilardino added a second just after half-time as it ended 2-0.

Genoa were held to a 2-2 draw with newly-promoted Atalanta who sit on -5 points at the foot of the table following their six-point penalty for their part in a betting scandal. Fellow newcomers Novara held Chievo to the same scoreline with a late goal from Massimo Paci rescuing a point, while Catania and Siena played out a goalless draw.

Napoli chief taunts 'money-wasters' City

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has labelled Manchester City 'money-wasters' and said that it was satisfying to hold them to a draw in Manchester.

The outspoken Italian has previously caught the attention of British press with disparaging remarks regarding English women and has now gone on record to taunt Manchester City's inability to clinch a win at home despite their expensively-assembled squad. He said on the Daily Mail: "Here a draw is like a victory and we deserve high praise. People had said that City and their cousins United are the candidates to win the Premier League and it would be really hard for Napoli.

"It didn't go like this and if it weren't for a few errors, we could have won. I'm almost glad we conceded as it will give us time to think things over and not get convinced we're too perfect." The film mogul urged FIFA to clamp down on the free-spending nature of some clubs, but admitted that it did make getting a result against City all the more satisfying.

"Does Michel Platini want to make this financial fair play rule or not?" he asked. "Is it going to be respected? In any case, I have fun challenging money-wasters." De Laurentiis did concede his envy of the stadiums that the English clubs play in, suggesting that Napoli would do well to learn from them. He commented: "The English are extraordinary and build stadiums that bring a lot of income,

"They even have a cell in the arena in case there is any violence. I have never been able to understand why we can't do similar things in Italy. The San Paolo (Napoli's stadium which was last developed for Italia 90) needs to be restyled."

Serie A wrap: Inter, Roma remain winless

18 September 2011

12427261870.jpg

Inter Milan and Roma are still without a victory this season after playing out a goalless draw in Serie A on Saturday. Both teams came into the heavyweight clash at the San Siro looking to arrest their disappointing start to the campaign. Under new coach Gian Piero Gasperini, Inter lost the Super Cup to AC Milan and went down on the opening day of the league season at Palermo.

That reverse was followed by a 1-0 loss at home to Trabzonspor in the Champions League. Roma meanwhile, under the guidance of new manager Luis Enrique, bowed out of the Europa League to Slovan Bratislava and lost at home to Cagliari last week. And both managers remain under pressure after neither side proved capable of finding the breakthrough in a limp encounter.

Roma's Dani Osvaldo had the first sight of goal for either team 11 minutes into the match. The striker was played into the box after a great ball from Daniele De Rossi, but Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar was there to turn away Osvaldo's low drive. Roma lost their goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg mid-way through the first half.

The Netherlands international was knocked unconscious following a collision with Lucio, to be replaced by former Ajax colleague Bogdan Lobont. Cesar denied Osvaldo again early in the second half, following a neat through ball from Roma veteran Francesco Totti. Diego Milito almost opened the scoring for Inter with a diving header from Wesley Sneijder's free-kick, but the Argentina striker sent his effort wide of the post.

It was Inter who looked the more likely to score late on, with substitute Mauro Zarate and Sneijder both registering long-range efforts. Diego Forlan went closest to finding the breakthrough when his curling effort from the edge of the box went just past the far post in the 76th minute. And with five minutes to go, Sneijder saw a shot cleared off the line by Roma debutant Simon Kjaer.

Also on Saturday, Cagliari defeated promoted Novara 2-1. Ribeiro Cardoso Thiago struck the first for hosts Cagliari 37 minutes into the match at the Stadio Sant'Elia, with Joaquin Larrivey doubling the lead in the 85th minute. Takayuki Morimoto pulled one back for the visitors with two minutes to go, but they proved unable to snatch a late equaliser.

Serie A wrap: Napoli dispatch Milan, Juve edge Siena

18 September 2011

12427262020.jpg

Edinson Cavani struck a hat-trick as Napoli came from a goal down to defeat Serie A champions AC Milan 3-1 on Sunday. Visitors Milan led early in the match at the Stadio San Paolo, following a headed goal in the 12th minute from former Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani. Napoli wasted no time in levelling proceedings, with Uruguay international Cavani netting the equaliser from close range less than 60 seconds later.

The striker made it 2-1 on 36 minutes, receiving a Walter Gargano pass in a wide position before sending a curling effort beyond Christian Abbiati in the Milan goal. Milan had chances to get back on level terms, with Aquilani denied twice just before half-time. But Napoli made sure of the three points after the break, as Cavani completed his hat-trick with a vicious strike on 51 minutes.

While title-holders Milan are yet to register a victory from their first two matches, Napoli move joint top on six points, alongside Juventus, Udinese and Cagliari. An Alessandro Matri goal in the 54th minute at the Stadio Artemio Franchi was enough to give Antonio Conte's Juventus team a 1-0 victory over Siena.

Antonio Di Natale and Mauricio Isla both scored in the opening half-hour to secure a 2-0 win for Udinese at home to Fiorentina. Atalanta continue to reduce a six-point deduction for match-fixing, registering a 1-0 victory over Palermo courtesy of a goal from Argentine striker German Denis. They remain bottom of the league table on negative two points, following a win and a draw in their opening two fixtures.

Goals either side of the break helped Lecce to a 2-0 away win over Bologna, with Guillermo Giacomazzi and Carlos Grossmuller on target for the visitors. Maxi Lopez's first-half injury-time penalty was all Catania needed to overcome Cesena 1-0. Genoa came from behind to beat Lazio 2-1 in the Italian capital.

Giuseppe Sculli had put the hosts ahead on 11 minutes, a lead they retained to the interval. But second-half goals from Rodrigo Palacio and Juraj Kucka ensured Genoa left the Stadio Olimpico with all three points. A Sebastian Giovinco brace saw Parma defeat visitors Chievo 2-1 at the Stadio Ennio Tardini.

Giovinco opened the scoring on 24 minutes, but the visitors looked to have escaped with a point when Alberto Paloschi equalised 10 minutes from time. But Giovinco struck once more, with the 90th-minute winner then overshadowed by his dismissal deep into second-half injury-time.

Serie A: Novara 3 Inter 1

21 September 2011

12427262460.jpg

Newly promoted Novara claimed a shock 3-1 Serie A win over Inter Milan on Tuesday to heap more pressure on Inter boss Gian Piero Gasperini.

Just six days after suffering a 1-0 Champions League defeat to Turkish side Trabzonspor, which was followed by a 0-0 draw with Roma over the weekend, Inter fell behind to a Riccardo Meggiorini goal seven minutes before half-time.
That was where the scoreline stayed until the 86th minute, when Marco Rigoni scored from the penalty spot to put the hosts 2-0 up.

Inter pulled a goal back through Esteban Cambiasso three minutes later to set up a nervous finish for Massimo De Salvo's men.

But Novara put the result beyond doubt in stoppage time, with Rigoni tapping in to secure all three points.

The result is an incredible one for Novara, who two years ago were plying their trade in the third tier of Italian football before successive promotions led them to Serie A.

Gasperini's nightmare start at Inter continues meanwhile, with last season's Serie A runners-up having claimed only one point from their opening three league games.
