Sam Leong's band of brothers - cyclists

Spot on nobody wants to ride in the front but if they are out front they don't want anyone sitting in their draft.

If a rider is leading the race and is being chased and the chasing group consists of teams of riders he will almost definitely be caught because team members take turns to chase and in a situation where it is team vs solo rider a team will win 9 out of 10 times.

However if there are no teams chasing only individual contenders for the win then he has a chance of winning even if there is someone stronger chasing from behind because the strongest rider is not going to chase with other contenders sitting on his wheel. This is why timing is everything and the strongest rider often does not win the race.
So...TDF is usually won by the most sneaky rider? Lol!

Road cycling is a team tactical sport. In a 3 hour race you can see strategies emerge, alliance struck, politics played, and sometimes even betrayal. Le Tour is the most brutal yet beautiful annual sporting event in the world. I invite you to ignore the ignoramuses here discover for yourself.
Interesting.

The problem with bike racing is that it is impossible to fully appreciate the tactics unless you have raced competitively yourself.

EG when you see the race strung out with riders in the gutter because of a 30kph cross wind you need to have experienced it yourself to understand why it is next to impossible to close a 5 meter gap in those conditions.

And the utter exhaustion resulting from defending repeated attacks by different riders is worse than hell.

It is the same with all sports.

One needs to play the game to appreciate the feats achieved by the sportsmen.

I have played many sports. Tennis. Basketball. Soccer. Golf. Badminton. Rugby. Softball. Table tennis.

I remember a good friend telling me tennis is such a slow game compared to badminton. He said the ball moves so much slower than the shuttlecock. Well when i took him to play a game of tennis with me he wasnt having any of that "tennis ball moving slowly" chasing my baseline drives at him or try to volley shots passing him. Lol!

So yes i understand there are many intricacies of the cycling sport which i do not appreciate because i have never participated in it.

For games like tennis despite the fact that I have never hit a tennis ball in my life I can still marvel at the breathtaking skills that top players exhibit.

However for cycling everyone looks as if they are just riding along. It is absolutely boring to watch without a deeper understanding of what is being played out.

Cavendish first win was skilful and careful, yesterday’s move was dangerous and could have caused falls

But you gotta give it to Cav ... rose like a phoenix from ashes :coffee:

I just wish he wouldn't be so emo and weep like a girl every time he wins.

Competitive cycling like TDF is something between a marathon and motor GP and that is why it is so interesting. Admittedly, only those who rides can appreciate it. I’ve always wondered if I could keep up with a TDF rider for 30 seconds…

I think the adrenaline rush, the extreme exhaustion, the sudden burst of joy upon winning - it’s a formula to make grown up men weep. MVDP also wept like a pussy. Alaphillipe seems much more measured after he has a baby. He was also weeping and wailing like mad when he won the world championship last year. The Slovenians are the coolest.

I drafted behind a pro rider once in England. 52 kmh on flat. Clung on for dear life for 5 min or so and then gave up. These guys' FTP is like 300+ watts.

My money is on the Slovenians this TdF. Looks like Pogacar is emerging as the favourite. The mountains loom and things will become clearer.

5 mins is good, hope to have a chance to try 1 day

During the TT I was wondering if Filippo Ganna could have beaten Pogacar.

Pogacar's win was a result of meticulous preparation; including pre race recon and a whole team to ensure proper positioning on the TT bike. Now he has to show he can survive the mountains and then put in more time at the penultimate ITT, and he will be in yellow in Paris.

Interestingly the last time a time trial specialist (other than Pogacar) won the Tour was the mighty Miguel Indurain. I am feeling all warm and fuzzy inside now...

200W is easily achievable without pharma help.

I can do 200W for an hour despite my age. I'm sure a 25 year old can easily put in the same effort for an extra 3 hours.
Covid may not be real to you, but i'm sure lactic acid is
