200,000 jobs to be axed and only half will be foreigners. We have been told over and over again that foreigners to cushion unemployment of locals in a downturn of the economy. See news report below.

In an Apr 6 note, Maybank economists Chua Hak Bin and Lee Ju Ye predicted 150,000 to 200,000 job losses in Singapore this year, even with fiscal aid from the Government.

In comparison, there were 10,690 retrenchments in 2019, according to an MOM report published in March.

Half of the layoffs are expected to affect foreigners, as the Government’s stimulus is targeted at saving local jobs, they wrote, adding that the unemployment rate is expected to spike above 5 per cent - higher than 4.1 per cent during the 2008 global financial crisis and 4.5 per cent during the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome outbreak.

I know how it feels being terminated from work and stress and unhappiness within the families. Sucks...

I don't understand!
Why not protecting the Singaporeans first, the foreigners should be sent back to their countries, like what Triump is doing right now

More retrenchments are coming.

If you think your job is safe....just wait for it. Is the govt doing anything to cancel work permits and permanent resident passes so that you citizens will have a job?

A big fat NO.
You voted for this govt. If you're retrenched it is your own fault for believing this govt will take care of you.

And now you know why they wanted to call for GE in haste because they forsee the retrenchment numbers skyrocket. And now their window of opportunity is no more.

We MUST thank the foreign workers. They are the ones who put an end to the PAP's plan to call an election in May.

Maybank are known for giving very pessimistic outlook about everything in Singapore. They are called Dis MayBank for a reason.

Why even bother to bring this up when the ppl themselves wanted the lockdown? If the want to dig their graves....let them.

Because Singapore is a trading hub and foreigners control it's economy.

All this for a virus that does less damage than the flu.

Singapore belongs to foreigners too. So it's fair that locals and foreign staff share the retrenchments 50-50. We hire and fire by merit. You think we're some racist apartheid country like jiuhu, where jobs, especially in the civil service, are given overwhelmingly to people of a certain race and religion?

It's our privilege as citizens to do NS. And along with that privilege comes with other privileges like buying subsidized HDB flats, voting for the PAP, subsidized public education, healthcare, CPF.

Dilution takes time. Cannot go on one bang the Modi party dont like it sue CECA agreement....

Retrenchment is good because it will help the younger generations to prepare an uncertain future
But nowadays the younger generations lack the soft skills. They are impatient and cannot take the slightest hardship. Indirectly, most of them have been pampered and spoiled by their own parents. All they know is easy money.
