remember these places ?

The TBG family never made it rich though i think a few sons became lawyers. The second generation held out for redevelopment but in the end it never amounted to much. One of the about 10 years go bought a small flat in Marine Parade. That stretch of Katong was absolutely memorable.

Oh, Didn't know much about the TBG family members. if they sold the land for redevelopment during the 1980s, it was probably way to early but all this is of course with benefit of hindsight.

There was another stretch of back lane hawkers East Coast Road/Marshall Road junction, behind the row of shops on main roads. Anyone else remember this?

Yes. I am a Katong boy as well and I'm sure many Katongites will also remember Tay Ban Guan. Probably one of the first air con supermarkets during the late 1960s / 1970s. There was a coffee house on ground floor where I remember a single scoop of chocolate ice cream served in a glass cup (fat wine glass style) was such a treat for special occasions.

The second floor was an assortment of shops including the first shop when you climbed the stairs was a top shop. I still remember TBG very fondly as some of my best childhood treats were from here. So sad that all of these are no longer places I can bring my kids to:-(

I do recall the 2nd floor shops above TBG. I used to get all my records at one shop I think was called Max, not too sure of the name.

Siglap corner the junction of Siglap Road and East Coast Road was at one time a wet market, now it is a dead place the last time I dropped by.

Ahhh... Max Records...that is a blast from the past....I used to listen to radio or reddifusion to wait for the song title and with my list of favorite songs ready, will bring it to Max for them to record the compilation into a single cassette tape. Kids today have it so easy with the internet and all the MP3s players etc.

Sitting here next to a window, typing this reply, with the cool air blowing in from outside, brings me back to my youth in 1970s where life was so much simpler and more enjoyable.

BTW, Max eventually moved to Katong Shopping Centre but closed down many years ago.

The old Siglap market is now Siglap Centre, also another condo cum shops complex. And indeed except for MacDonalds and Cold Storage, the rest of the place is really quiet.

For fans of Jalan Tua Kong mee pok, the original stall started from old Siglap Market. The original stall owner is still selling along Upper East Coast Road but for me personally, I prefer one of his disciple's version - The Art of Mee Pok at Simpang Bedok Shopping Complex

Yes. I am a Katong boy as well and I'm sure many Katongites will also remember Tay Ban Guan. -(
Though I did not stay in Katong, but i literally spent my teenage year in Katong.
Eh... i'm St Pat's boy. Katong Shopping Centre was where we will meet.
We would go Roxy, Katong and Palace cinema for shows.
Makan at the backlane, video games at Katong Shopping Centre and Tay Ban Guan.
Later, Parkway Parade was established, so do Liberty and Republic cinema.

Before there was Marine Parade reclaimed land, the Katong Convent Girl's School was next to the beach. I remember there was a small park where I used to go to take the ice kachang enjoying the sea breeze. Good times back in the old days.

Neptune Theatre, Next to Clifford Pier, topless cabaret, wedding dinner where the trap door open and the chief waitress will be raised up with the first opening dish. Owned by Lien Yong Chow.

Ate countless lunch there, Tim Sums, don't know how many company's dinner etc...really missed Neptune & Victor Khoo was my facourite there.

Oh! I really miss TBG, though I am not from Katong, family used to shop there for we had relatives living around those parts. It was or was it the furst deparmental store in SINgapore and in Katong was well. There was a collection of small shops there, was it first or second? there was where I will go oftern to get a certain kind of magazine from the 'mama' there, Stamps Magazine ( what were you thinking!), and Annuals, Beano, Dandy etc.. and the annual pocket books on aircrafts, I was crazy about aircrafts at one point in my life. TBG lasted for many years until recent memory, it was a supermarket of some sort. Tay Ban Guan sure bring back memory...so does Odeon-Katong cinema, Katong Shopping centre with Oriental emporium, Red House...the food there including the old type of "Noodle" house ( same as the one at Capitol Annexe) until recent years closed down.

sama sama bro...TBG /Emporium......roughly opposite it the wonderland coffee house....then the coffee house at Lau's Arcadia.

i sure do...use to call it wonderlane.....prawn noodles guys later went to the marine parade hawkers centre. The duck porridge was also quite good.

Max, DADA, Roxy, Cosdell at Orchard Rd, the one at Cortina Shopping ( where The high court is now), what's the name and The Attic etc.. I rediscovered The Attic, if people can still remember the shop, that used to be at Cold Storage Orchard Road. I visited someone at TTSH and made my way through the connector to Novena MRT found myself at what's the name of this shopping centre?, saw the shop sign that says " The Attic" and lo! and behold!...it was!. The last time I bought something from The Attic was some years ago, some CD's the last being " International Submarine Band" and "Gram Pasrson".

i remember that too bro...the ice kacang man's son was at Mt Vernon school. He should be about 60 yrs old now ...the son ..not the father :)

Solid Gold Health Centre in TBG and Take 5 in building where Wonderland was located:p

Lau's Arcadia damn suay. Through the years, most of tenants occupying corner ground floor unit have closed shops. There was a nice Penang Cafe some years ago but also game over liao

yes Max is correct...the guy closed shop after a few years. I last saw him a few years ago working for Harvey Normans in Parkway Parade. Chatted with him a bit about the old 60s. I bought a few vinyls from him too although i had no turntable....went to play the songs at my neighbour's place

Lau's Arcadia seems to have bad feng shui. Most tenants there did not survived and there were countless. I know the place well as my old family doctor was located there next to the duck rice stall.

you are correct ....Lau's arcadia sway. Used to know the son....Walter Lau but a bit snobbish guy

Wonderlane was one place to eat and look at the girls. :)
