remember these places ?

Orchard Road carpark in the late 60s and 70s my favourite. Daud's tea was bestest.

Remember a Malay "cowboy" who used to raom the area complete with plastic revolver, holster and plastic bullets.
If only some Gymkhana could have loaned him an old horse.
That would have brought the Wild Wild West to Orchard Road.

yes i remember the cowboy character. The carpark wantan mee and soup kambing were good.

the original Fatty Weng's at albert street was also a very good place to eat. Lots of ang mos patronised him because he spoke fairly good english.

I think there was a punchdrunk former boxer who used to look after people's parked cars.

Places to conclude end of night business - MacRichie, Pierce, Sembawang Park, Mt Faber, Bukit Timah Campus, etc, if you got car. No car, Padang in the middle with newspaper.

Pasir Panjang Hotel was an old favourite.

You old folks would remember the Virgin Corner close to Sembawang End, where there was a Sembawang Patio and the Famous Roti John.

Hordes of foreign sailors used to descend on that strip when their ships docked in Sembawang Wharves for repairs after being shelled by the Vietcongs.

The so-called virgins were all above 55 years of age, in heavy make-up and in dark areas. These sailor boys did not mind and would pick them up for a quickie at the back-lane or the park infront.

Heaven knows how they feel when they woke up in the morning and saw the wretched old hag asleep next to them.

Sembawang Roti John no horse run, the original!

Was he Malay??, I still remember him, with his plastic revolver, bullets & Sherif badge, pity Star Wars wasn't shown then yet, when he was around, John Wayne was the Hero of the West. He used to stand at the Bus Stop where Pavilion the shop & Bibi Baba Was, whch id now somewhere between the present Courts Store is ( last time, OG & before New York Department Store).

Wonder if he is still alive?

Those days, SILO was supposed to be the union supermarket co-operative and NTUC Wellcome was supposed to be the union department store co-operative. Then came Phey Yew Kok who started a basketball league but himself bounced away with lots of cash missing from NTUC. To help NTUC plug the hole in the account, SILO was given over to NTUC Wellcome that became the NTUC FairPrice of today. It was something like POSB given over to DBS minus the corruption and abscondment.

Yes I remember SILO, still have a mental picture of what the logo looked like. "Pay You Cock" is rumoured to be hiding in ROC!

Bugis Street before Bugis Junction and Bugis MRT was for mostly Brit and Yank sailors to have fun with drinks and ladyboys. After the decision was made to develop Bugis, police chased the ladyboys away to Johore Road where it became Petain Road (Banana Leg) brothel style. No more entertainment and sweet talk servicing. That turned out to be bad location as it as it was just next to a convent school and a major Singapore-Johore bus terminal.

So police chased them away again and they ran to Clifford Pier. Bad location again, central financial district even if they only came out at night after office hours. So police chased them away again, all the way to Changi Village. No more choice, can't chase them away any further, otherwise they all fall into the sea.

"ang teng bay tow", aka Clifford Pier, back in those days, one have to take ferry from there to the Sounthern Islands & Pulau Blakang Mati and then later Sentosa. Every once a year it will swamped with devotees taking the ferries to Kusu island, the police will be doing crowd control. The 'ladies' would swarm Clifford Pier starting at around 6 or 6.30pm and made it inconvenient for office workers and even people to get to the bust stop & the taxi stand and those who need to use the pier. They were 'shooed' off & they started 'occupying' the underpass linking from the 'old NRIC office' building to Esplande (Queen Elizabeth) walk that lead to Satay Club & later to Marina Square. That, inconvenient a lot of people who had to use that underpass.

As for "ang teng bay tow", it was one "little Thailand" with all the 'tigers' ( hmm Thai Girls) with food stalls & stalls selling all sort of things, till they moved to Golden Mile Complex ( aka Woh Hup Complex), then came the Pinays & the Pinoys all 'occupying' the beer garden, then they moved to Orhard Tower, Mind Arcade...

SINgapore was 'colourful' back then, especially when the Americans on their R&R, the Autralian & New Zealand troops were here, Bugis Street, "ang teng Bay tow"..was the 'talk of the town'.

if so he should be in his 70s at least.

Wonder if we still can dress up like "John Wayne" with the cowboy boots, Hat, plastic bullets & revolver & walk down Orchard Road, without someone calling the SBF or appearing on STOMP or You Tube??

By the way, have not been to Shaw Centre for a long time, is that shop selling Cowboy books etc. still there?

palace theatre, bright cinema, seaview hotel, ambassador hotel...both with their coffee houses and lounges.

I used to go to seaview hotel to watch the X-periments perform.

Bright Cinema brings back fond memories. A cheap cinema offering lots of privacy for young ppl like us then.
I watched Gunfight at OK Corral, Mist Over Dream Lake and other shows starring Wang Yu, Lo Lieh, Peter Cheng Ho. Old color films like ASIAPOL, INTERPOL and Heroes of Telemark

I remember this Chinese usher with long hair and gruffy looks and the Malay family (watchmen) of the premises. All of them spoke good Hokkien.

My favourite hawker was a tiny lame Chinese hawker who used to sell Yong Tau Hoo. He used to carry his wares on his shoulders and set up his stall at the front empty land. Acoss the road was the famous Porridge shop and a shop selling turtle soup. You may also recall Jalan Telaga and the old Lorong Tai Seng Market

Next to the cinema was a couple selling mee-soup (opposite the SWEE construction godown along Irving Road just behind the ESSO petrol Kiosk). This led to Playfair school and Khong Guan Biscuits Factory and into Lorong Koo Chye.

Opposite Harper Road was an empty space where you could get the best char-kway teow for 30 cents (had to bring along your own egg), Chng-Tng and much more.

You may also recall the former ROSE Cinema (an open-air cinema amidst coconut trees and ponds) along Kim Chuan Road opposite the former Primary Production Abbatoir and the old Bethany Church close to Kim Chuan Avenue.

At Lorong Bakar Batu there was these Peking Theatre (open-air) where Indian pai kias from Kolam Ayer would gather when it screened Tamil shows starring their idol, MGR. After the show there will be fights and bottles would fly.

Oh blimey, those good ol days when we were young, happy and contented. When 10 cents a day could buy us lots of things. When I could bring Ah Huay, my girlfriends out with only a dollar.

Those blurring days when British military trucks and Royal Navy buses rolled down the road.

Let me share this with you good folks:-
Reminds me of a gangster/thug by name of Mani
Whose live was always sunny
Mani, an extortioner, had lots of money
For wine, women, milk and honey.
One day he had a clash with Sani
Who said something funny.
About Mani and his love for Lallang-Tani (Chinese samsu).
Both landed behind bars at Changi.

Joe and the X-periments
Oh Jungle People we hare happy people.
Use to watch the group in Shangrila Hotel in the 80's
Joe was then a devout Hindu.
His wife and he then opened the House of Israel.
There was a big court case.
Never heard of him anymore.

Have a good day mates.

Blimey! that far back, when MGR, P. Ramlee, Leong Seng Por rules the cinemas?? wow!. I know only that area, when I have to go past Jalan Kambing, "where the goats and the...goats roam". When I have to go to Jalan Kambing Camp.

anyone remember this shop called 'Shalom Associates '? They were along orchard road quite close to Fitzpatricks. Amongst other things they sold

the Speedo and Jantzen swimming trunks/costumes. This was in 1967 . I accompanied some ACS guy there and he bought 2 pairs. Each pair of

trunks cost $6.30. Shit that was more pocket money than i got in a month from my parents...i got 20 cents a day, minus my bus fare to and from

school.

I recall the shop you mentioned. I bought my Speedo there too! Nearby, Sri Dewa and High Society Escort Services? Along Cairnhill Rd, one quite class male barber shop. I think called Cairns or something that sounds like that. Wtf, 4 decades passed like that.

Neon Billboard(s)....the one on top of Cathay Cinema... advertising Toray, the hammer & anvil man, of Lam Soon Oil, togther with the ones for Craven 69, Abdullah Cigarettes, Beiklin ( Beiklin for Vitality) at Eu Tong Seng Street or the huge National at Capitol Cinema Crapark...and that Pink Pussy Cat Orhcard Rd..

Talking about old cinema, my parents used to bring me to watch movies at the old cinema beside Wing Tai building at kovan/hougang. Still remembered the ticket were those pink or blue type of soft paper and we would buy kachang puteh and dry cuttlefish. Cinema ticket then was $3 I think. That was around year 1987. We had just moved from the village at Lentor to hougang.

That was the ZENITH Cinema where I saw the movie SSSSSSSnakes.
It has "Gone With The Winds of CHANGE"

There were two of these that I recall: one here in Kallang, and another in Queenstown, where I lived.

The funny thing was I was driving around in London, somewhat lost when I finally saw a sign that pointed to the Chelsea Bridge. I turned as directed and saw the bridge. As I approached the bridge, I saw on the far bank of the Thames, a structure exactly like this one! The Brits must have brought it over lock, stock and barrel.

Since we're on this old places thread. I like to go off tangent a bit, anybody remember what was the name of the electronics shop at Holland V that never fails to advertise its electronic products weekly in the straits times?
