<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->A MANAGER of a cleaning company was jailed for two years yesterday for corruption and a series of offences under the Employment of Foreign Workers Act (EFWA).
William Koh Wee Gene, 36, who faced 65 charges in all, had admitted to seven charges of bribery and five others of breaching work permit conditions by helping in the illegal deployment of foreign workers and making false declarations to the Controller of Work Permits.
Koh was the manager of Maint-Tech Contractors when he decided to bribe a Ministry of Manpower employment inspector, Law Boon Seng, 32, in return for tip-offs on impending raids by the ministry in 2005.
He gave Law between $1,000 and $1,500 on 21 occasions through an intermediary.
But the prosecution proceeded on only three counts of $1,000 involving Law, who has already been jailed 14 months for corruption.
In another matter, Koh also conspired with a businessman to corruptly give an MOM officer a bribe to provide information on impending raids in 2006.
In the EFWA cases, Koh, who was also a proprietor of Y3A Enterprise and Sheng Yun Services, flouted the conditions of foreign work permit holders by deploying them as conservancy workers when they were only supposed to work in the marine industry.
Investigations showed that he also gave two 'fall guys', Goh Chiang Heng and Tan Wee Ling, bribes of $500 and $250, respectively, to take the rap for him should any of the marine services companies be investigated by the ministry.
The remaining 53 charges were taken into consideration.
