Racist who filled Muslims' shoes with ham as they prayed in a mosque walks free from court
A racist thug who stuffed ham into the shoes of Muslim worshippers at a mosque has escaped a jail term.
Jamie Knowlson, 30, also draped slices of the meat - which Muslims are banned from eating - on railings outside the mosque as his victims prayed inside.
He was then caught on CCTV hurling abuse at worshippers after they confronted him over his sacrilegious act.
Islam teaches its followers to avoid pig meat as it makes them impure and unclean.
Knowlson initially told police the stunt was a drunken joke but later admitted that he was fully aware of the offence his actions would cause.
He pleaded guilty to causing racially or religiously aggravated harassment and could have been jailed for up to two years.
But walked free from Bristol Crown Court with a suspended six-month prison sentence because he had returned to the mosque to apologise for his actions.
Sentencing, Her Honour Judge Carol Hagen said: 'It is difficult to imagine a more offensive incident.
'Not only the fixing of meat to railings but aggravated, in my view, that members of the mosque were inside praying at the time.'
The court heard that Knowlson, from Kingswood, Bristol, targeted the Al-Baseera mosque in the St Judes area of the city which is used by more than 2,000 Somali Muslims every week.
He crept to the mosque from nearby Redwood House homeless shelter on January 9 this year - putting ham in footwear and on railings outside the building as worshippers prayed.
CCTV footage showed him returning to the shelter, where he was confronted by the mosque's caretaker Abdi Djmaa.
As Mr Djmaa returned to the mosque he heard shouts of 'the next visit will be harder', 'bad meat' and 'girls' coming from the direction of the building.
David Hunter, prosecuting at Bristol Crown Court, said it had been a premeditated attack specifically targeted at the Muslim community.
The court heard that shamed Knowlson had returned to the mosque to apologise after the hate crime.
Ian Halliday, defending, said: 'This was a brutal, misconceived, drunken prank.'
He returned to the mosque and offered his apologies in person.
Knowlson sat in tears as he was handed a six-month suspended sentence and 150 hours of unpaid work.
A second man is due to stand trial in connection with the incident later this month.
After sentencing, Mubarak Mohamud, one of the three imams at the Al-Baseera mosque, claimed the inflammatory act had upset the Muslim community.
He said: 'There wasn't anger, people were more upset and shocked.
'We don't eat pork and we are banned by our faith from eating it, as it makes us impure when we are going to our prayers.
'We don't hate the man - we just suppose he doesn't know us.'
Knowlson refused to comment after leaving court.

Bern (Onislam.net) – Sending shockwaves across the peaceful Swiss Muslim community, body parts of a dead pig were buried on the site of a future mosque, in a new clear sign of growing anti-Muslim sentiments in the European country.
"Since the ban on minarets there's been an increase in Islamophobia and Islamophobic events, so it was not really surprising" Abdel Azziz Qaasim Illi, spokesman for Switzerland's Central Islamic Council, told CNN on Saturday, November 12.
A dead pig and four pig heads were buried at the site of a future mosque in the town of Grenchen.
The attack was uncovered last Friday when police received an anonymous message claiming that someone had buried the body parts in the proposed site for the mosque.
The unsigned flier, written in German, says "This operation was done (conducted) to protest against the growing expansion of Islam in Switzerland," and says that a similar desecration in Spain earlier halted another mosque construction project.
The note also said that 120 liters of blood from the animals were also spilled in the site to desecrate the ground to halt the construction of the mosque.
Islam considers pigs unclean because they are omnivorous, not discerning between meat or vegetation in their natural dietary habits unlike cows and sheep for instance, which eat only plants.
Muslims do not eat pork and consider pigs and their meat filthy and unhealthy to eat.
Illi said the deed "crossed a line" that had already been pushed against Muslims since a popular referendum in 2009 banned the construction of new mosque minarets.
The mosque site was purchased several years ago by the local Muslim community from a Swiss far-right political activist.
The man claimed that he had not been informed that it would be used for a mosque and had fought the sale in court, before losing his civil case recently, paving the way for the construction to go forward.
Though the message clearly targeted the Swiss Muslim community, the police said that whoever is responsible will not face hate crime charges.
Veterinary health officials have been called in to find if pig's blood has in fact been spilled, and that charges may be filed over illegal dumping of animal parts in addition to other potential criminal charges, he added.
Despite the incident, Illi, the spokesman for Switzerland's Central Islamic Council, said the mosque project will go on.
According to Illi, Switzerland is home to an estimated 500,000 Muslims, out of a population of more than 7 million, most of whom are immigrants from Albania and elsewhere in the Balkans.
In 2009, the far-right party led a 57 percent of the voters’ approval on a proposal to ban the construction of mosque minarets nationwide.
The huge propaganda surrounding the voting, however, was regarded as a main cause of tarnishing the image of peaceful Muslims in the European country.

The mosque has been the site of vandalism when three pig’s feet were seen thrown onto the center’s driveway in August 2012. A security guard said he saw two women throw the feet. Members of the Muslim religion are forbidden to eat pork. Group members called the act a “hate crime.” (Muslims call EVERYTHING a hate crime)

The pig heads were hung on a gate at the entrance to the mosque shortly before morning prayers and a large amount of pig blood was spilled on the ground.
"It is contemptible," the mosque's president, Hajii Mohamed, told AFP. "To attack a religion like this, I don't know what is happening. People lose their heads, especially during Ramadan."
Abdallah Zekri, the chairman of France's Islamophobia Observatory, said Wednesday's outrage occurred against a background of an increase in anti-Muslim actions in the first half of this year.
"For this to occur during the holy month of Ramadan, it's unspeakable," he said. "It is racist provocation."
The Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France said it was "outraged by the hateful desecration of the mosque".
The mayor of Montauban denounced what she described as intimidation of Muslims after the heads were discovered in the early morning attached to two pillars at the entrance of the Salam Mosque, a huge pool of blood on the ground.
