China warns Philippines on 'mistakes' in maritime spat

The Philippines' largest warship was involved in the stand-off but was replaced by coast guard ships

Philippines 'pulls warship back'
China has issued fresh warnings to the Philippines over a month-long stand-off in the South China Sea.

China was prepared to respond to ''any escalation'' in the maritime situation, Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying said.

She also warned the Philippines it was making ''serious mistakes'' and damaging relations.

The two countries have accused each other of maritime intrusions into disputed waters at the Scarborough Shoal.

China claims sovereignty over a large U-shaped area of the South China Sea, bringing it into dispute with several neighbouring countries.

Philippine and Chinese vessels have been facing off at the shoal since 8 April.

'Right track'
Chinese ''government vessels'' will ''continue to be alert'' in the area because of ''continuous provocation'' by the Philippines, Ms Fu said.

The strongly-worded message was delivered in a meeting she called on Monday with Alex Chua, charge d'affaires of the Philippines embassy in China, said a statement posted on Tuesday on the Chinese foreign ministry website.

''The Chinese side has also made all preparations to respond to any escalation of the situation by the Philippine side,'' she reportedly said.

Ms Fu asked the Philippines to withdraw its ships from the area. ''China once again urges the Philippine side to seriously respond to China's concerns and return to the right track for handling the matter,'' she said.

The row began early last month when the Philippines said its naval ship had found eight Chinese fishing vessels at the shoal.

Two Chinese surveillance ships then arrived in the area, placing themselves between the warship and the fishing vessels, preventing the navy from making arrests and allowing the fishing boats to leave.

Late last week the Philippines said there were four Chinese surveillance ships and 10 fishing boats in the disputed waters, as well as a Philippine coastguard vessel and a fisheries bureau ship.

Manila has asked China to settle the issue at the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea (ITLOS).

"We do not wish to escalate any tensions right now," President Benigno Aquino's spokesman told reporters last week.

"Therefore, what we're doing for now is to just to document the situation... and consequently, raise it before the tribunals."

Current stationing of US navy ships in Singapore is just posture,Pinoy is trying to flap their wing, using US as a show of force.

If the shooting start will most likely be a minor scratch, it won't be a full blown war, unless US do really want to go all the way mutual destruction.

Do you think US will go to war for the pinoy, they kick US out, now asking for US help, what do they have to offer to the US other exporting pinoys to the US.

Triple Dare the pinoy to strike first, their bark are louder then their bites, they will be very very sorry if they strike first.

USN is using the pinoys to test the reaction and gain any electronic info on PLAN radar and other electronic devices. without US support, then what pinoys are like a snake trying to swallow an elephant.

good opinion, likewise, I believe the same as you chuckyworld, USA is just using Pinoys as a testing ground of China's military might... Looking at how's US economy is doing, I don't think USA can afford a committed war, and looking at the amount of visits USA is visiting on Beijing... this is the time where USA need CHINA to buy up their T-BILLS to help finance their debt crisis. USA's debt crisis is far from over.

USA will surely not go to war for pinoys, they only want to arm flex their military might, and what to show to China that they are still the POLICE of the world, and want China to acknowledge that.

Pinoy in this case is just a political negotiation bargain chip used by USA. I believe if Pinoy strike first, USA will not do anything... China have already reacted by stopping tourism routes to Pinoy land... one less revenue to Pinoy... if Pinoys persist, and insist on the rights of the islands, I believe China will start a all out economic blockade against Pinoys first, like what China did with the Japs last year, when Japs taken one of the fishing ships of China, and it's crew... China reacted instantly by stopping the trade of rare earths to Japs, forcing the Japs to return the Fishing Ship and Crew unconditionally.

Pinoys are being played by USA...

Actually I really admire the spirit of Ah Tiongs more than Pinoys in Singapore. Pinoys are generally known to be lazy and political in nature. Ah Tiongs are more hard working. Do not forget, if you are Chinese Singaporean, your origination is China.

If war happens between China and Pinoy Land, China will do something drastic like forcing all the pinoys in China back to Pinoy Land, and these sort of things will kill Pinoy land's economy as Pinoy Land relies so much on their exported citizens for money.

Nuke Subs Of US Not War Ready ?

BRP-Humabon-PF-11.jpg

SAN FERNANDO CITY — The Philippines is flexing what little naval muscle it has amid rising tensions in the West Philippine Sea, also called the South China Sea.

The Philippine Navy flagship BRP Rajah Humabon, the country’s biggest and oldest warship, left Poro Point in La Union province *on Thursday to conduct patrols along Scarborough Shoal, an *atoll which faces Zambales province and which China claims.

In Manila, President Benigno Aquino III on Friday insisted the Philippines won’t be bullied by China in their territorial spat and that Beijing should stop intruding into waters claimed by Manila.

Mr. Aquino said in an interview with The Associated Press that a government-backed mission to scout Manila-claimed waters for oil and gas had turned up “very good” prospects, though he declined to elaborate.

He said the Philippines reserved the right to explore its waters despite China’s rival claims.

“We will not be pushed around because we are a tiny state compared with theirs,” Mr. Aquino said.

“We think we have very solid grounds to say ‘do not intrude into our territory’ and that is not a source of dispute or should not be a source of dispute,” the President said. “We will continue with dialogues, but I think, for our internal affairs, we don’t have to ask anybody else’s permission.”

Mr. Aquino also said: * “We are not going to escalate the tensions there but we do have to protect our rights.”

Pursuing diplomacy, Foreign Secretary Albert Del Rosario met with diplomats from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and stressed the need for a united position “in addressing challenges.”

“Our objectives are to establish naval presence in the area and to test the readiness of our vessel in terms of territorial defense operation,” Cmdr. Celestino Abalayan, captain of the Humabon, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

“(We are) conducting defensive naval patrol to safeguard the territorial waters of the country.”
Abalayan said the patrol around Scarborough Shoal would last two to three days. A similar patrol was carried out two weeks ago.

Last battleship

The deployment of the Humabon followed a decision by China to dispatch its largest maritime patrol ship, the Haixun-31, to Singapore on Wednesday in a voyage during which it will pass through the West Philippine Sea.

The Humabon is the country’s largest and oldest warship. The 93.27-meter ship was built during World War II and has been described as “the last World War II-era destroyer escort/frigate in active service.”

The Humabon travels at a speed of 39 kilometers an hour (21 knots) and has a crew of 165.
Rival claimants

Both China and the Philippines have claimed Scarborough Shoal as their own. In 1995, they signed a code of conduct pledging to solve their dispute by peaceful means.

Scarborough is an atoll or a triangle-shaped chain of reefs and islands surrounding a lagoon. It lies about 220 km from Zambales, 350 km from Manila and more than 800 km southeast of Hong Kong.
Scarborough, with an area of 150 square km, is more than 320 km from Puerto Princesa City in Palawan province. It is not part of the Spratly Islands where China, the Philippines and four other Asian nations are embroiled in a separate territorial quarrel.

Offshore patrols

The defense department said the deployment of the Humabon to Scarborough was not a response to the voyage of Haixun-31.

“No, I don’t think these are connected. The Navy conducts regular offshore patrols and we should not connect the deployment of Rajah Humabon to the deployment of this Chinese maritime vessel,” Defense Undersecretary Eduardo Batac said.

“It’s not really an action on what’s happening in the Spratlys. It’s really the pursuit of missions which are regularly given to them, one of which is offshore patrol,” he added.

According to Batac, China could patrol its coastal waters the same way the Philippines could, so long as the Chinese would not intrude into the Philippines’ 320-km exclusive economic zone.

Zone of Peace

Malacañang didn’t sound alarmed either by China’s latest move.

“(From) what we understand, it’s a civilian ship that is on its way to Singapore, so it’s something that happens ordinarily and there’s no cause for alarm,” deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte told reporters.

In his meeting with the Asean ambassadors, Secretary Del Rosario said that turning the contested waters into a “Zone of Peace, Freedom, Friendship, and Cooperation” was a key in “advancing a peaceful settlement of disputes.”

Del Rosario urged the Philippines’ Asean partners to “take a common position and, as a family of nations, together seek common approaches in addressing challenges,” a Department of Foreign Affairs statement said.

It said Del Rosario called the meeting to brief the ambassadors on his proposal for a “rules-based regime,” under which disputed territories can be designated as a joint cooperation area among claimants.

Biggest threat

Commander Abalayan said the biggest threat to the Humabon crew was the rough sea and the erratic weather in the Scarborough Shoal area.

Abalayan, whose previous assignment included patrolling the seas off northern Palawan, said he was not expecting any confrontation with troops from countries with claims on isles and reefs in the so-called West Philippine Sea.

Zambales Governor Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. said the Navy routinely patrols the Scarborough Shoal because “it is within the borderline of (Philippine territory).”

Ebdane, a former defense secretary, said fishermen from Zambales ply the area frequently but Chinese fishermen sometimes venture in Scarborough’s periphery.

Zambales officials have endorsed a resolution of the Masinloc town government claiming Scarborough Shoal, known locally as the “Bajo de Masinloc,” as part of Masinloc.

Vice Governor Ramon Lacbain II has pushed the provincial council to endorse the resolution.

Coast Guard to help

In Manila, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said it was prepared to assist the Navy in patrolling the West Philippine Sea.

Commandant Adm. Ramon Liwag said a Coast Guard ship, the BRP Edsa, and a surveillance vessel owned by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources but manned by the PCG, were stationed in Puerto Princesa.

“We will assist [if called],” Liwag told reporters.

Bayan Muna Representative Teodoro Casiño said the House of Representatives’ foreign affairs committee could invite the Chinese ambassador to the Philippines and ask him about his country’s plans on the Spratlys.

Casiño said one reason for China’s recent actions in the Spratlys could be related to the Joint Maritime Seismic Undertaking (JMSU) which showed the area had rich oil and gas deposits.

Sometime ago when the US tried to convert a few of its nuke subs into a conventional warfare using the Navy Seal for infiltration, I was worried. Because, Russia was fast becoming richer with many tycoons from oil companies like that Chelsea FC boss. With money, the state can fatten up its war machines once more. US nuke subs may have empty silos or tubes. Cut down maintenance cost ?

Frankly speaking, what are the Pinoys going to fight with ? I think navies from Vietnam and Thailand cannot do much too.

On point 1, I agree, on point 2, I agree, on point 3, I agree, on point 4, I agree, and on point 5, I agree, and finally on point 6 I agree.

This kind of lazy nation, with no hope of winning any protracted war against China... if they do trigger a war, they will be so very sorry that they did, because this is EXACTLY what China wanted, a provoked war, as right now, China have so many mouths to feed, and requires so much energy resources and land... so, Padi Pinoy Land is a good option, as their military strength is so weak compared to that of China... and why would USA interfere?

Pinoy can't afford any modern weaponry... and they got nothing good to offer to USA other than their citizens for exports, not forgetting that USA is having a huge debt crisis and high unemployment rate, USA wouldn't want to do anything stupid to upset their biggest debtor (CHINA)

Re: Jade Seal Of Ching

Its just a matter of time the rest of the world, INCLUDING USA, and EUROPE, kowtow to CHINA and it's CCP government.

It is just within this decade that China's GDP will exceed that of USA... and using Technology as a form of debt repayment to China, China's technology advancement is expected to be leaps and bounds, again within this decade.

Singapore in a way is already kowtowing to China. [Did anyone of you know that Singapore Shipping Services are offering very low prices for goods from China, Routing IN SINGAPORE?]

Do not be mistaken, SINGAPORE NEED CHINA more than CHINA NEED SINGAPORE.

Count your lucky stars that Singapore is positioned as such, where goods do actually route from Singapore Ports, if not, Singapore will be fucked.

Count your lucky stars that Thailand and Malaysia have not come to an agreement on building a "Suez Canal" in their shared peninsular.

Count your lucky stars that CHINA regards Singapore as a model city (even for China's city development)

just stating my point of view that's all... no intention to defend nor attack

Pinoys have the worst war record in the world, even worse than India. The Spanish came and they surrendered the whole country. The Americans came and they surrendered the whole country. The Japanese came and they surrendered the whole country. After Japanese surrender back to Americans, Americans gave Pinoyland back to Pinoys because they too were sick and tired of babysitting them with no profit or benefit. At least Thailand and Singapore were useful in logistics supply lines during Vietnam War. Pinoyland is totally useless and Pinoys are totally useless, relaxing under trees.

Pinoys at war with PRC must a joke that would choke US somewhere between laughter and trying to recompose from laughter. If Pinoys dare to fire the first rounds, I open plate, within one month, PLA at the gates of Manila, with or without US interfering. Any takers? PRC would never fire rounds, as in the cases of Korea, Vietnam and India. They won't fire first and let you accuse them of bullying. You fire first and let's see what'd happen to you.

Pinoys are not only useless, they're fucking crazy pullings stunts for fun that's for nothing and not profitable. They should concentrate on singing and domestic help.
