Today, I read a news article claiming that
Incomes of Singaporeans rise and inequality falls
https://www.straitstimes.com/singap...aporeans-rise-and-inequality-falls-but-growth
Such statement is very distorted. Perhaps, the PRs are considered locals, locals working in the gig industry like driving Grab or food-delivery is getting a good pay because they can command more than $3000 a month (full-time).
I am not refering to PRs but Singaporean kids whose father or maternal grandpa served NS.
When I look at the current housing prices and salaries, I feel that the future is very tough for our young locals. We are very much like Hong Kong. Or maybe HK is better because at least, healthcare is almost free and there is no need to serve NS.
Do we still remember the Singapore dream? Is it stripped down to just Degree and BTO now? If you throw in either car or condo, a couple without inheritance will have to slog for their whole life. For the same efforts, Degree, House, Car and affordable Healthcare will easily attained in many other countries.
Singapore does not prioritize locals and in many ways; instead locals are penalized (NS, influx of foreign students and workers), so where is our social safety net?
Even if I assume that they don't get retrenched, then how about their family baggage? Taking care of a senior above 80 years old or sending preschooler to a mid-tier childcare cost about $1000 each. Unlike Australia or Japan, the wealth that our forefathers accumulated didn't appear to reduce the financial burden of our sandwiched class too.
With income being stagnant for the man on the street due to influx of foreigners, seriously do our kids still stand a chance to be better-off (work stress and purchasing power) than their parents?
Common sense tell me no, the outlook is sobering
