SINGAPORE - Barricades and chairs were being set up at the void deck of Block 506 Hougang Ave 8 on Friday (May 21) morning to prepare for a swabbing exercise slated to begin later in the day for the entire block.

This is after some residents of the 12-storey block were found to have tested positive for Covid-19.

This is the first time an entire block of residents, comprising about 120 households, will be undergoing mandatory Covid-19 testing as a precautionary measure.

Swabbing will take place on Friday and Saturday, as announced by the Ministry of Health (MOH) on Thursday (May 20).

Last July, 58 households were offered testing after nine Covid-19 cases were detected in Block 111 Tampines Street 11.

When The Straits Times visited the Hougang block on Friday (May 21), many residents were surprised that they have to take a mandatory swab test.

Some said they have yet to receive an SMS informing them of the swabbing exercise. Others said they read about the news online.

A resident, who wanted to be known only as Ms Q. Z. Tan, 38, found out that there were Covid-19 cases living in her block only after she read an article in The Straits Times last night. "They said leaflets were distributed, so I'm coming down to check my letterbox," she said.

The IT analyst, who works from home and lives alone, said that it was the first time she was leaving her flat in a week. As an added precaution, she will also be cancelling her weekly visit to her parents' home this weekend.

Another resident, Mr Amos Lim, 29, was shocked when he read the news on Facebook and decided to take extra precaution. "Instead of taking away food, we will get it delivered," the construction site engineer said.

Many residents also said they did not know how many cases were linked to the block or who they were.

Leader of the Opposition and Workers' Party chief Pritam Singh, who is an MP for Aljunied GRC, went to the block on Friday morning and spoke to the staff there.

Covid cluster at his own ward and he's doing a great job? Are you a twit?

As I have been saying over and over again there is no stopping the virus and there is little point in wearing masks and locking down over and over again.

All this does is delay the inevitable.

Tio covid also can blame workers party. come I clap for you.
Then immigration officer tio covid and spread to so many ppl. So should the home affairs minister be responsible?

As the residents of 506 Hougang Avenue 8 get ready for mandatory Covid-19 tests, Pritam Singh expressed appreciation to staff from various agencies for their part in setting up the swabbing facility at the block's void deck.

The Leader of the Opposition joined fellow Aljunied GRC MP Gerald Giam in visiting the block this morning (May 21).
"Thankful for the support of staff from various agencies including National Environment Agency and People's Association in the effort," he wrote in a Facebook post.
He also thanked a team of conservancy workers from Aljunied-Hougang Town Council for their thorough wipe-down of the block, as well as other town council staff for helping in communications with the residents.

Residents asked to follow predetermined timing

According to the Ministry of Health (MOH), testing will be conducted at 506 Hougang Avenue 8's void deck from May 21 to 22.
Singh wrote in his Facebook post of the "key concern" over residents crowding the void deck as soon as the swabbing facility opens at 1pm.
He asked the residents to stick to indicative timing for testing sent to them by the Health Promotion Board via SMS

Did piss and poop deliberately plant Wuhan virus at oppo wards ?

This is what happens when you vote opposition.

Lifts and common property are dirty and become unhygienic infested with bacteria and viruses. These residents deserve it if they are infected and suffer long term covid illnesses.

They deserve who they voted for.

Mr Singh is doing a good job. He makes sure the things are well run in that situation. Provide any logisitical needed.

This is just a beta test of future mandatory testing done at various low SES HDB heartlands... including the PAP ones.

Of course, gaming the optics of 'WP is incompetent' by the 160th news cycle is a side benefit for the PAP establishment. Another distraction after that little diplomatic spat with India.

Don't get distracted and focus on what really matters: the incompetence bordering on treason shown by the PAP govt, and the mounting evidence that Covid-19 came from a Chinese military lab.

Answer this basis question.... the circuit breaker in June last year obviously did not work which is why we are back to square one now. If we do another circuit breaker just like the one last year why would anyone with half a brain believe that the outcome will be any different from the first time round.

As Einstein said :

It's a futile exercise. Just learn to live with the virus the way other countries have done. There is no other way out of this conundrum. Yes there will be a few more deaths but the overall impact on society will be far less serious. If these lockdowns keep happening people will start dying for other reasons eg frustration, despair, undiagnosed cancers, heart attacks and so on.

That only works if you assume the swab tests to be reliable.

Those incoming ah nehs at the airport were diligently swabbed... did it help?
