Singapore—Workers’ Party MP Gerald Giam (Aljunied GRC) provided details in a Facebook post on Friday, May 21, for mandatory testing for all residents of Block 506 Hougang Avenue 8 after a small number of residents tested positive for Covid-19.

The tests will be conducted from 1 pm to 8pm today (May 21) and from 9 am to 4 pm on Saturday (May 22) at the void deck.

“To avoid overcrowding, residents will be notified by SMS of the time of your test. Until then, do stay home and avoid physical contact with people outside your household,” he added.
Mr Giam reminded residents to bring their NRIC and TraceTogether token or app and to keep at least two metres’ distance between each other.

He asked them to keep monitoring the health conditions of their family members and to consult a doctor when feeling sick.

“If you have questions or there is anything I can do to help, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’m praying that all residents will be healthy and keep safe!,” he added, providing his contact details for easy access. (WhatsApp: 89250747 Email: [email protected])

Mr Giam added in his post a letter from the Ministry of Health (MOH) giving the same information.

He was joined at Block 506 Hougang Avenue 8 by his fellow Aljunied GRC MP, Leader of the Opposition and Workers’ Party head Pritam Singh.

In a Facebook post, Mr Singh wrote that staff from the Health Promotion Board were coordinating the set-up of the swab facility at the void deck. He was thankful for the support from “various agencies including NEA and PA in the effort”, he added.

He also said a team of Aljunied-Hougang Town Council conservancy workers was doing a thorough wipe-down of the block.

“Gerald and I thanked them for their efforts and the TC will make sure they get a swab test done as well. Thank you to AHTC for assisting in communications with residents as well,” he said.

Mr Singh urged residents to follow their scheduled times for the swabs in order to prevent overcrowding.

“Our request to residents is to stick to this timing so that the safe distancing ambassadors deployed at the block do not have a difficult time. As of now, residents from the lower floors will be tested today while those on the upper levels will be tested tomorrow.”

In its daily Covid-19 update on Thursday (May 20), MOH wrote that its epidemiological investigations found that a few Covid-19 cases live at 506 Hougang Avenue 8.

“We have distributed leaflets to affected residents, and will also send them an SMS notification. Residents of 506 Hougang Avenue 8 are also advised to monitor their health closely and consult a doctor immediately if they feel unwell,” MOH added.

He added that for residents living in the surrounding blocks, there is no need to get tested unless they have visited households in the affected block from May 2.
Residents will receive a text message notifying them about their appointment for the swab test and more details will be provided on a flyer that will be distributed door-to-door, said Tan, who is also Minister of State for Home Affairs and Sustainability and the Environment.

As the residents of 506 Hougang Avenue 8 get ready for mandatory Covid-19 tests, Pritam Singh expressed appreciation to staff from various agencies for their part in setting up the swabbing facility at the block's void deck.

The Leader of the Opposition joined fellow Aljunied GRC MP Gerald Giam in visiting the block this morning (May 21).

"Thankful for the support of staff from various agencies including National Environment Agency and People's Association in the effort," he wrote in a Facebook post.

He also thanked a team of conservancy workers from Aljunied-Hougang Town Council for their thorough wipe-down of the block, as well as other town council staff for helping in communications with the residents.

Residents asked to follow predetermined timing
According to the Ministry of Health (MOH), testing will be conducted at 506 Hougang Avenue 8's void deck from May 21 to 22.

Singh wrote in his Facebook post of the "key concern" over residents crowding the void deck as soon as the swabbing facility opens at 1pm.

He asked the residents to stick to indicative timing for testing sent to them by the Health Promotion Board via SMS.

This would ensure that the safe distancing ambassadors deployed at the block would not have a difficult time, he wrote.

"As of now, residents from the lower floors will be tested today while those on the upper levels will be tested tomorrow."

Giam reminded residents to bring their NRIC and TraceTogether token or app when it was their turn for testing.

"Try to keep at least 2m distance from other residents," he added.

Cases found in 506 Hougang Avenue 8
Mandatory testing of the residents of 506 Hougang Avenue 8 was announced by MOH on May 20 after several Covid-19 cases were found to reside in that block.

The ministry did not provide further details about these cases, but said the tests will be conducted as a precautionary measure.

SINGAPORE: Mandatory COVID-19 tests began for residents of three housing blocks in Yishun and Hougang on Tuesday (Jun 1).

Residents of Block 745 Yishun Street 72 were being tested after the Ministry of Health (MOH) said on Monday that there was "likely COVID-19 transmission" in the block.

Six COVID-19 cases have been identified in the block, spread over two different households. Subsequent wastewater testing detected COVID-19 viral fragments in the block, said the ministry.

Testing was scheduled to take place at the void deck from 9am to 4pm on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In a Facebook post, Member of Parliament Faishal Ibrahim said residents he spoke to on Monday were "concerned but calm, understanding the need for the swab".

Residents of Blocks 501 and 507 Hougang Avenue 8 will also undergo the mandatory COVID-19 tests.

This was announced after traces of the virus were found in wastewater samples taken from those blocks. No confirmed cases had yet to be identified in the blocks, said MOH on Monday.

The Hougang residents were scheduled to get tested at the void deck of Block 507 between 9am and 4pm from Tuesday to Thursday.

MP Gerald Giam said an extra round of cleaning and wipe-down with disinfectant was conducted for the blocks after the announcement.

"We are actually fortunate that the authorities have detected viral fragments in the sewage so that early action can be taken to swab every resident and identify the source of infection," he said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

As of Tuesday, a total of five public housing blocks had been put through or were undergoing mandatory tests.

Residents of another block in Hougang Avenue 8, Block 506, underwent testing on May 21 and May 22 after MOH said COVID-19 cases were detected there.

Residents of Block 559 Pasir Ris Street 51 were also tested for COVID-19 on May 23 and May 24 after cases were detected in households living in the block.

Singapore—Mandatory Covid-19 testing is being carried out in Blocks 501 and 507 Hougang Avenue 8 after viral fragments of Covid-19 were found in wastewater.
According to MP Gerald Giam (Workers Party-Aljunied GRC), the detection of the viral fragments has been “fortunate.”

“We are actually fortunate that the authorities have detected viral fragments in the sewage so that early action can be taken to swab every resident and identify the source of infection. Without that, the infected residents may unknowingly infect others, leading to more unlinked cases,” he wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday (June 1).

Similar swab testing is also being done at a block in Yishun, and for the same reason.
And while CNA reported that six Covid-19 cases had been reported in two separate households in the block at Yishun, there are no confirmed cases yet at the two blocks in Hougang, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) on Monday (May 31).

The swab testing will take place at void decks of the two Hougang blocks from Tuesday to Thursday (June 1 to June 3) from 9 am to 4 pm.

This is the second time that mandatory testing is being carried out at Hougang, since infections were recently detected at Blk 506, which led to a swabbing exercise on May 21 and 22. A total of 11 people were infected with Covid-19 at Blk 506, most of whom had already been placed in quarantine.
Mr Gerald Giam announced that residents need to undergo the swab tests in a Facebook post on Monday.
He also said that the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council activated cleaners to conduct an additional round of cleaning of the blocks, which was followed by a wipe down with disinfectant.

The MP told residents that the swabbing exercise “is a precautionary measure in response to a detection of a possible infection in your block, and to ensure your health and well-being”.
Mr Giam added that the exact time slot for residents to appear at the void deck to have their swab test would be announced via SMS from MOH, and asked them to stay at home as much as possible for their own safety.
In addition to the extra cleaning and disinfection, Mr Giam wrote that “SDST anti-microbial coating has been applied to all the lift buttons on these blocks to reduce the chance of infection from touching lift buttons.”

But he asked residents to continue to wash their hands with soap and water, nevertheless, after touching lift surfaces.
Mr Giam wrote on Tuesday that he stayed up until midnight the previous evening with a volunteer distributing a letter in different languages to residents’ doorsteps because he “knew from the experience just over a week ago of the swab of all residents of Blk 506 next door, that many residents would be anxious and have questions about the process”.

Mr Giam added that he had been able to provide answers to residents’ questions thanks to the Health Promotion Board.
He added that the Workers’ Party had brought up the possibility of sewage testing in Parliament as early as last year.
“My colleague, Leon Perera, had first asked in Parliament in May last year about the use of sewage testing to detect traces of infection, and the Minister at that time said that the government was running trials on it. I’m glad that those trials have materialised into something so useful in practice.”
