Tonight we held a very special dinner. This was the first time in three years that My Buona Vista residents were able to gather together as a community to celebrate National Day.
Throughout the pandemic - neighbours, grassroots leaders and volunteers reached out to, helped and supported one another.
I thank everyone for their support, without which Singapore would not have been able to come so far. Without which, we will not be able to celebrate in full voice as a nation in two days’ time.

Thank you to all our residents who joined us this morning at My Buona Vista National Day Observance Ceremony.
We’re back after three years! Pride swelled as we sang our National Anthem and recited our Pledge in-person, together as a community.
This would not have been possible without our grassroots leaders and volunteers, colleagues, partners and of course, our residents. Thank you for your trust and for working together to tackle the challenges over the last few years. Thank you for taking care of one another.
We are Stronger Together. Happy National Day, Singapore

Keechiu met SP students.

Chan Chun Sing

14 hrs ·
Last week, I met with Singapore Polytechnic students to hear their aspirations for their polytechnic education and plans for the future.
Was encouraged to hear that the students are committed to their own learning and development even after graduation, to remain industry relevant and seize new opportunities.
Many also expressed interest in gaining overseas exposure to enrich skill sets and gain a deeper understanding of different cultures.
This is their commitment towards #ForwardSG.
Looking forward to hearing from more of our youths, as we jointly embark on this Exercise. Together, let us support their dreams and journey onwards!

Keechiu congratulates President's Scholars.

Chan Chun Sing

22 hrs ·
Congratulations to (from left to right) Andrew, Solai, Eugene and Elizabeth on receiving the President’s Scholarship!
I was happy to be able to meet these four outstanding young men and women at the President’s Scholarship Award Ceremony. It was encouraging to hear how they each aspire to give back to Singapore – be it through safeguarding our country’s sovereignty, nurturing future generations through education, or creating a more inclusive society for Singaporeans.
As the world becomes increasingly complex, the Public Service will have an even greater responsibility to serve and lead. We will need to draw on the diverse strengths and experiences of our people to meet future challenges and grasp opportunities.
Today is just the beginning of a journey for our President’s Scholarship recipients. I wish them success in their endeavours and that they will grow into leaders with their hearts in the right place to build a better and brighter future for all Singaporeans.

Keechu invites you to take The Caterpillar Challenge.

Chan Chun Sing

The Caterpillar Challenge
What does it take for your caterpillar to turn into a butterfly? Sing a song, play a game, help a friend or clock a personal best timing in reciting a multiplication table?
All of the above! Primary 2 students of CHIJ (Katong) Primary take part in The Caterpillar Challenge to master the multiplication tables and improve their foundations in Mathematics. Students each begin with a blank caterpillar cartoon with the aim of filling in all the sections of the caterpillar to turn it into a butterfly.
The best part is that they get to choose which challenges they want to complete first and do so at their own pace. They set their own goals and can team up with friends to play games like spin wheel and flash cards. Celina shared, “When I started learning the times tables, I thought it was very hard. But the game encouraged me to take the first step of memorising the 2 times tables. When my caterpillar was fully grown, I was very happy!”
The whole P2 level even had an Interclass Multiplication Competition on Zoom where students from different classes participated in an online competition while the rest of the class cheered them on. Seniors in the school also recorded video messages for their current P2 juniors to encourage them on this journey. Another fun fact -- when you help a friend, you get a heart sticker on your caterpillar!
I hope our students continue to help one another as they learn and have fun doing so too!

S'pore has to respond to global transitions, seize opportunities: Chan Chun Sing

1660393546211.png

SINGAPORE - Singapore must entrench itself in the global value chain by developing the capacity to produce what the world needs in times of crisis, as well as being able to attract frontier companies, ranging from vaccine developers to firms in precision engineering.

This will ensure that Singapore cannot get easily displaced, said Education Minister Chan Chun Sing at the 9th Singapore Economic Review Conference on Monday (Aug 1).

The three-day conference kicked off at Hilton Singapore in Orchard Road on Monday, bringing together academics and business leaders to discuss the opportunities and challenges of accelerating economic growth in a post-Covid-19 world. It is organised by the Singapore Economic Review journal, whose editor is Nanyang Technological University's Albert Winsemius chair professor of economics Euston Quah.

In his opening address, Mr Chan spoke about six key global transitions that will serve as the economic backdrop for the next 50 years, and the six moves that Singapore needs to make to respond to them.

For one thing, Singapore must pioneer new forms of connectivity and reinforce existing ones, he said, including growing its hub port status and global logistics network while resuming the plans for Changi Airport.

But this is not enough, especially as data and finance - the new enablers of growth - are not constrained by geography.

"We need to seize the opportunities that come from the connectivity of data, finance, talent, technology and regulations," he added.

"Connectivity of technology standards and regulations to promote interoperability in a fragmenting world will be another source of man-made competitive advantage for Singapore."

Building new talent networks is also vital, Mr Chan said.

"We need to break the artificial talent divide between locals and foreigners. The question going forward is not how many locals and foreigners we have in Singapore. The question is how many people - both local and foreign - we can have in the Singapore global talent network," he said.

He added that a yardstick of success should also not be how many jobs are created here for Singaporeans, but how many global companies Singapore can create and how much global talent it has access to.

Singapore must also remain principled amid the shifting geopolitical tides, which means understanding and connecting with countries beyond major powers like the United States and China, he said.

"We do not take sides. We take positions based on our national interests and principles that best support our long-term survival and success," said the minister.

Singapore must be a preferred platform for collaboration in a world that is fragmenting, where different countries can connect in a trusted and rules-based environment, he said.

This means laws must evolve, especially those pertaining to intellectual property, data management and financial services.

Meanwhile, Singapore must also take a pragmatic approach in the carbon transition to balance economic growth with stewardship of the environment, Mr Chan noted.

"Beyond looking for new 'green industries', we need to 'green all industries' to the extent possible," he said.

"Developing alternative carbon-lite energy sources will be a key priority for our energy mix."

Finally, Singapore needs to refresh its social compact so that everyone progresses together, Mr Chan said. This goes beyond just paying taxes to people taking action, such as each medium or large company making it a point to hire someone from a disadvantaged background.

Prof Quah said in his opening address: "We are in the closing chapter of the pandemic, but the world and its global economy are facing new challenges.

"Other issues emerge or persist such as disrupted supply chains, inflation and rising inequality, uncovering vulnerabilities of our interconnected world."

Brunei Crown Prince visits Victoria School, hosted to lunch by President Halimah at start of official trip

1660400643092.png

SINGAPORE - It was a packed schedule for Brunei's Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah on Wednesday (Aug 3), the first day of his official trip to Singapore for a bilateral programme that is resuming after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

He visited Victoria School in Siglap, Our Tampines Hub and its integrated public service centre, and was hosted to lunch by President Halimah Yacob and her husband, Mr Mohamed Abdullah Alhabshee, at the Istana.

He was also hosted to a welcome dinner by Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean and Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Wednesday evening.

Crown Prince Billah is here for the 8th Singapore-Brunei Young Leaders' Programme (YLP) from Aug 3 to 5. Launched in 2013, the YLP is an annual exchange that Singapore and Brunei take turns to host to deepen ties between younger leaders from both sides. The last YLP was hosted by Brunei in 2019, before Covid-19 struck.

He visited Victoria School on Wednesday morning with his wife, Princess Sarah, and a delegation.

Education Minister Chan Chun Sing, who hosted them, said in a Facebook post that they observed a biology experiment and visited the school's eco-garden.

At Victoria Hall, the school's hostel, a Secondary 3 student from Thailand named Possaweekrish shared his experiences as an international student in Singapore.

To commemorate the visit, the school presented a painting of the facade of Victoria School to Crown Prince Billah. It was done by Damien Soon, a Secondary 2 student who is in an art elective programme.

Mr Chan said: "With the gradual resumption of travel, I am glad that we are once again able to have in-person exchanges with close friends like Brunei. Our two countries have much to learn from each other, and I look forward to furthering our cooperation in education and beyond."

President Halimah, in a Facebook post after hosting the Crown Prince to lunch at the Istana, said she had last met him during his visit to Singapore in 2018 for the 6th YLP.

"We have a special and longstanding relationship with Brunei that is underpinned by strong bilateral cooperation and personal ties between our leaders," she said. "The YLP is a key platform for both sides to work together to find new opportunities for cooperation and to strengthen bonds among the younger leaders."

Crown Prince Billah, who is also Senior Minister at Brunei's Prime Minister's Office, is here at the invitation of SM Teo.

SM Teo said that the YLP helps the two countries explore new opportunities for collaboration and strengthen interpersonal ties between their younger leaders.

Both sides have worked hard and well together throughout the pandemic and their efforts have paid off, he said in a Facebook post.

DPM Wong said in a Facebook post: “Over dinner, His Royal Highness and I had good exchanges on new avenues for collaboration and regional developments. May our bilateral ties continue growing from strength to strength!”

During the YLP, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will also host a lunch for the visitors.

The Crown Prince will also visit RSS Singapura - Changi Naval Base during his time here.

Besides being close partners in Asean and other international fora, Singapore and Brunei also cooperate extensively in many areas, including defence, finance and education.

Keechiu defines the Singapore Compact.

Chan Chun Sing added 10 new photos.

1 hr ·
I hope 3 distinguishing features will define our Singapore Compact:
• First, Singapore will be a land where everyone can fulfil their potential, regardless of their background. [ 卓越你我]
• Second, Singapore will be a land where we not only care for our present generation, but also strive to leave behind a better future for generations to come. [ 成就他人]
• Third, Singapore will be a land where everyone can contribute meaningfully, regardless of where they are in life. [ 贡献社会]
This 3-pronged social compact can only be accomplished if every stakeholder – the Government, industry, community, families and citizens – play our part and bring out our best in one another, and as team.
Shared how we can do this with education as an example at the Tanjong Pagar National Day Dinner today with Indranee Rajah, Alvin Tan 陈圣辉, Eric Chua, Melvin Yong 杨益财, Joan Pereira.
