Grateful to Buona Vista RC/NC and New Creation Church volunteers for supporting us in our community outreach efforts.
In My Buona Vista, we are very thankful for all our partners and volunteers. But what is even more heartening is that they understand volunteering goes beyond contributing materially.
As a community with diverse needs and capabilities, all of us can play a role to help everyone realise their potential. It is more important that we give others the confidence that they can tide over immediate challenging issues, and take charge of their own destiny. In doing so, we can also do justice to our own blessings.

Keechiu makes announcements about vaccinations for students.

Chan Chun Sing

13 hrs ·
As parents, we all want our children to be healthy and safe. Vaccination against #COVID19 will help minimise the chances of our children getting seriously ill if they do get infected, especially with the latest Omicron variant of concern.
As more of our children get vaccinated, we will be able to resume more learning activities, sports and games, which are critical to their physical, cognitive and socio-emotional well-being and development.
The Expert Committee on COVID-19 Vaccination has recommended the use of the Pfizer vaccine for children aged 5-11 years old, and assessed that the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the risks. Ministry of Education, Singapore is working closely with Ministry of Health, Singapore and the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) to get ready for the vaccination exercise which will be offered to more than 300,000 children in this age group, including those who are long-term pass holders in Singapore.

We are awaiting confirmation of the date of arrival of the paediatric doses of the Pfizer- BioNTech/Comirnaty vaccine that are specifically for children aged between 5 to 11 years old, so that we can finalise our plans to offer COVID-19 vaccination to all eligible children.
If the delivery arrives as scheduled, we will progressively open up the booking of vaccination appointments next week, and the vaccination exercise will start from end-Dec 2021 for the older children in Primary 3-5, and the younger ones thereafter in early 2022. We will give an update when details of the delivery are confirmed.
Vaccination, together with Safe Management Measures and good personal hygiene, will strengthen our suite of measures to protect our children.

Found this treasure trove of books in the library of West Spring Primary School. I used to read them - Enid Blyton’s Secret Seven, Famous Five and of course, the Hardy Boys.

Our school libraries are really well-stocked nowadays. We didn’t have that many choices in the past. Hopefully our children will still enjoy holding and reading physical books in the digital age. CCS

While it is common for Singaporeans to interact comfortably with one another using different languages in our daily lives, it was not an easy journey for bilingualism to take root in Singapore. And it takes continued effort to nurture a bilingual nation.

Enjoyed my chat with 林稚瑛 Kristine Lim on how we can encourage our children to learn their mother tongue, and acquire other languages. For our young children who are just starting out with language-learning, the most important factor is instilling confidence and motivation through words of encouragement from parents and educators. I have personally benefitted from such positive reinforcement in learning Mandarin during my growing up years. It is also important for parents, schools and the larger community to create conducive environments for our students to thrive in learning 2 languages.

Thank you Mediacorp Channel 8 for the interview on ‘Focus’ 《焦点》 which spotlights the importance and relevance of bilingualism in Singapore. Other than instilling a deeper understanding of our own heritage and culture, bilingualism opens up career and social opportunities for our people both within and beyond Singapore.

For those who are working hard on improving your mother tongue or picking up a new language -- keep trying and don’t give up!

Catch 《焦点》tonight at 10.30pm.

Thankful for the generous support of our partners from the Singapore Kwangtung Hui Kuan (新加坡广东会馆). Joined them this morning to help to distribute assistance to some of our less-privileged residents.

Grateful to all our partners who continue to contribute and give back to the community in so many different ways. They have supported us to build a home with heart in My Buona Vista.

Keechiu remembers this time of the year fondly.

It’s that time of the year.
Parents helping their growing children to try out larger uniform sizes and poring over their school booklists. Getting ready for the new school year.
Always remember the excitement and smell of getting the new and recycled books, wrapping them with talc, brown paper or even thicker old calendar paper to protect them. (We didn’t have the convenience of ready made plastic covers then.)
With greater digital access and more personal learning devices, perhaps our students will have fewer and fewer hardcopy books in the future. With the speed of technology adoption, will hardcopy text and exercise books become a thing of the past? Perhaps no more heavy school bags - our students would just need a laptop or tablet with them in the not-too-distant future?
