How can we help each other achieve our diverse aspirations and do justice to our blessings?
Through the Forward Singapore exercise, we held conversations with many of our stakeholders, such as youths, parents, educators and our industry partners. Together, we agreed that we must better equip our younger generation with the ability to distil, discern and discover, and equip Singaporeans with the right attitude to learn for life.
At the Forward Singapore Festival today, I shared that Ministry of Education, Singapore will continue to diversify pathways and build partnerships so that Singaporeans can equip themselves with the skills and competencies needed. But to change our mindset and embrace learning for life, it must be a joint effort. Individuals, parents, institutions and industries - we must learn to embrace learning beyond our grades, our traditional schooling years, and our past yardsticks of success.
Thank you to everyone for joining us for Forward Singapore - it was heartening to see many Singaporeans ready to do more for each other, together. With a whole of society effort, let us come together with our refreshed social compact to enact the changes that we want to see.

Chan Chun Sing is aware that the MIW is losing the support of more and more S'poreans disillusioned with rising unemployment, retrenchments, uncontrolled inflation and the end of the S'porean Dream of the 5Cs. I have no doubt that citizens are ready to do more for each other, but is Pay And Pay ready to do more for the people, instead of only gathering more $ for themselves?

How do we define success in social work? It is not found in numbers or statistics, but in the stories of individuals whose lives have been transformed and in the communities that stand stronger as a result. REACH Community Services has celebrated 25 years of doing just that.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated team at REACH Community Services Society for sharing your treasures, time and talent with the community. Your unwavering commitment and hard work have transformed countless lives, and helped to build a society defined by the big-heartedness to care for all, no matter their background.
REACH has consistently and tirelessly served the community for the past 25 years - here’s to many more years of making a lasting difference that goes far beyond numbers.

The first 15 years must build the foundations upon which learning continues for the next 50 years of life.
Take Mr Lok Eng Keat for instance. Starting as a trainee at Mediacorp's lighting department in 1991, he's now a senior manager, leading a team of lighting designers. By continually honing his skills and pursuing training opportunities, Eng Keat earned his Bachelor's in Digital Media at Singapore University of Social Sciences in 2022 and an Advanced Certificate in Training and Assessment.
In fact, there are many others like him. This afternoon, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam presented the SkillsFuture SG Fellowships to 12 Singaporeans, and the SkillsFuture Employer Awards to 24 employers. These awards recognise their strong dedication and commitment towards skills mastery and skills development. Congratulations to all awardees.
So long as you are willing and able, you will have a chance to keep learning throughout life and inspire others to do the same. That is the ultimate definition of success.

There is a famous saying: If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.
Today, our five polytechnics and ITE celebrate Staff Appreciation Day, AKA the higher education sector's Teacher’s Day.
Our IHLs are at the forefront of equipping our students with skills and competencies needed for the workforce. Over the past few decades, they have scaled new heights, in the development of technical training and expanding tertiary education to in-employment adult learners.
These would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our educators.
We also celebrated Singapore Polytechnic's 70th anniversary today, and witnessed the signing of a new MOU with Singapore National Employers Federation, which establishes a joint centre to expose staff and students to emerging industrial sectors. It is part of SP’s efforts to ensure that staff and students can compete on skills currency, with the right learning opportunities.
Congratulations SP, and to all our polytechnic and ITE staff, wishing everyone a Happy Staff Appreciation Day! May you continue to discover, create, and break new grounds everyday.

FORWARD AND UPWARD
As our leadership transition gathers momentum, we have our challenges cut out.
How well we stay united, cohesive and focused, will determine our future. It will also shape international perception and their confidence to work with us.
Our People's Action Party leadership is united behind PM Lee Hsien Loong and DPM Lawrence Wong, and determined to make this transition a smooth one that will inspire confidence and trust in us from Singaporeans and international partners alike.
We will need the fullest support from Singaporeans to win a strong mandate to focus on serving Singaporeans.
Together, we will overcome, accomplish and further distinguish ourselves as a special people and nation that can be a beacon in a troubled world.

There’s more to language learning than just words.
Ms Amalina Shalan from Commonwealth Secondary School captivates her students through engaging debates and captivating podcasts. Meanwhile, Ms Hairani Azri from Punggol Primary School harnesses digital tools like Book Creator to elevate basic writing tasks into collaborative projects. With 23 years of experience under her belt, Mdm Noraini Karsani from New Town Primary School introduced the concept of Positive Teacher Language to boost student engagement and confidence in their language skills, and even went the extra mile to create a dedicated microsite.
️

Yesterday, we celebrated Malay Language teachers who have truly epitomised the spirit of Arif Budiman -- a learned person who contributes to society through excellent and exemplary service as an educator.
My heartiest congratulations to all winners and many others who have gone the extra mile to enrich our students' learning experiences through innovative pedagoies and technology.
May all our Malay Language teachers continue to inspire in our students a love for the language and nurture the next generation of confident, bilingual Singaporeans

Keechiu wants to grow the perfect worker. :o-o::confused::laugh:

Chan Chun Sing

Is there such a thing as a “perfect worker”?
Companies are hungry for talent. Many may focus on bringing in new employees who can inject new skills, or who graduate with competencies ready to meet their needs.
But in a fast-changing world, we must break free from such a mindset and do differently, do better, if we want to stay competitive.
Met business leaders today at The American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore Human Capital Conference 2023. It is impossible for our education system alone to predict and design curriculum accordingly to train “the perfect worker”. Technology and disruptions are fast and unpredictable forces. So, one of the topics that drew great discussion was how our education institutions and companies can close the chasm between academia and industry and shorten the knowledge cycle.
Our IHLs are helping with this, by detecting changes in industry needs with speed, and reviewing curriculum to equip our students with the necessary skillsets. Companies and businesses too can contribute – and go beyond signalling skills and competencies needed for success. Come forward, partner our IHLs and provide frontier industry exposure to students and faculty, collaborate with us on research and innovation projects and let us work together to shape our workforce.
So, does the “perfect worker” exist? Do we hunt for them, or can we grow our own?
If we tighten the industry-IHL nexus successfully, perhaps we will no longer have to weigh such dilemmas.

In the 1960s, when Singapore first achieved independence, the biggest challenge we faced was mass access to quality education.
Fast forward several decades to today, and we must now overcome the challenge of mass customisation of education. Mass customisation is perhaps a paradox, but it can and must be reality for us.
Had a spirited exchange with Mr Erik Schatzker and trailblazers in the field of educational technology at the @Bloomberg New Economy Forum today, where we discussed how AI has changed education as we knew it, and how it can be used to better how we learn and size opportunities, in an increasingly technology-saturated world.
If we can do this well, AI and technology can be a capability multiplier to enable teachers to go beyond teaching to the middle - and instead uplift the bottom, enable the middle and stretch the top - bringing out the best in every unique student.
Ultimately, technology is neutral. Whoever masters it, wins. Whoever masters it with the right values, society wins. If we help our people master it, with the right values and principles, we can unlock great possibilities, improve quality of life and shape the next generation of change-makers.

We are the Port that never sleeps. Who keeps it awake?
Delighted to celebrate the Port Officers' Union (POU)'s 55th anniversary with our dedicated port officers and about 400 of their stakeholders. POU represents all Professionals, Managers and Executives working in PSA International, PSA Singapore and PSA Marine, upholding the spirit of trust and co-operation among the various parties. This united spirit ensures that PSA workers are well taken care of, even as our ports continue to run efficiently.
Awards were given out to those who had contributed greatly towards the strong POU-PSA relationship, and POU veterans, including 2 dedicated employees who have served our ports for over 50 years!
Through good and bad weather, PSA and the unions have contributed to keeping our supply chains running smoothly for our people and our businesses. Amid these busy and complex operations, our ports continue to find ways to grow, with new developments at the Tuas Port promising opportunities and jobs for the future of both workers and Singapore.
Echoing our late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, the port is our raison d'etre, and the commitment and support of POU will play a part in ensuring that Singapore remains a maritime capital.

How can we tackle a problem like climate change - one that knows no borders and larger than what any one nation can tackle alone?
Today, we celebrate the official launch of the Indonesia-NTU Singapore Institute of Research for Sustainability and Innovation (INSPIRASI), a timely and important milestone in our bilateral cooperation on climate change mitigation and sustainability research.
INSPIRASI’s flagship project expands on Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Renewable Energy Integration Demonstrator, and I am confident that this will contribute towards many sustainable and cost-effective energy solutions.
My heartiest congratulations to NTU and our Indonesian friends, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Indonesia, Institut Teknologi Bandung and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember. May this partnership inspire more collaborations within the region, as the future is ours to protect!

I was at a school visit recently, and teachers and students shared about a community programme which they embarked on. Students organised activities for an elderly care centre, and put up music performances. They were briefly nonplussed when their pop hits did not resonate with the seniors.
Eventually, one of them took out a chess set, and started a game with a senior. I was told the senior was hard of hearing, so it was a silent battle of wits.
But then again, young and old(er) can connect even with non-verbal activities, like chess bringing people together regardless of gender or age...
1f642.png

So how can we build a stronger, healthier community for our seniors?
Today, I witnessed an MOU Signing between Agency for Integrated Care - AIC Singapore and National University of Singapore which aims to provide more volunteer opportunities for students to spend more time with our seniors, understand and support them, and keep them healthy in their silver years.
Through befriending programmes at Active Ageing Centres, we can create new shared experiences through intergenerational bonding, and have meaningful conversations that will help nurture the hearts of the next generation.
I think both young and old have much to learn from each other. Time spent together is good for the heart, and for the soul.
