Olympics Disastrous Opening Ceremony

Actually, when it comes to materials that inspire for a show, China has alot to offer, as it has 5,000 years of history and achievements.
For the British, it can only come up with "ring the bell" childish shit.

In any case, the British's history is peppered with slavery and colonization and it's long-standing feuds with North Ireland and IRA, which was the pioneer in car bombings. LOL!
Maybe they should send in the Pirate Ships, those they sent over to colonize the world were "Pirates". Our colonial masters were Pirates, Drug Dealers(opium)
Slave traders!

The ceremony was very British. I doubt few of the world-wide audience knew what the hell was going on. James Bond and Mr Bean were quite good.
Paul McCartney's lip syncing was totally off!

This bitch should take this opportunity to say sorry for the murders, invasion and colonization of foreign lands.

Say sorry of the legalized opium trade to drug the Chinese and the Opium Wars.

Germany had their WW2 and the British even worst history compare to Germany.

She actually looked very bored.

After Beijing's spectacular show, it was going to be a tough ask anyway. Chinese threw money and the kitchen sink to save face and I doubt any nation can afford that sort of expenses at least for the next 20 years.

They should come to tiny Singapore. We'll paint Singapore in Olympic colors for them. A curfew will be imposed on all residents and Vivian will overspend 10 times the budget, then declared it as a huge success!

I pity those who actually paid for a ticket and are in the stadium. They would not have a clue what the hell is going on.

Mass events are held in stadiums because the space and distance does not lend itself easily to minor movements being interpreted. There is also lot of video shots from outside shown on screen.

uncle, u forget that good mass display events are only good in countries that have dictatorship leadership aka one party rule where majority of the population are either brainwashed or fear the authorities. just becasue u got use to seeing it on a local context it do not mean brits general public cannot connect to the opening ceremony.

The closing ceremony of the 2008 BJ Olympics is even better than this opening ceremony.

it is horrible, i think it started off good, and mid and ending horrible. I hate the caldron and choice of people lighting it. I think the brits knew they cannot beat the chinese, so they go totally another direction to avoid comparison. Too much british humors too little olympic.

LONDON - A celebration of free healthcare, the trade union struggle, the battle for women's rights and a fleeting lesbian kiss: the Olympics opening ceremony Friday did not shy away from weighty social issues.

Unsurprisingly, the show devised by Oscar-winning British director Danny Boyle drew accusations from the British political right that it had strayed into "leftie" issues.

Aidan Burley, a lawmaker from Prime Minister David Cameron's ruling Conservative party, tweeted: "The most leftie opening ceremony I have ever seen - more than Beijing, the capital of a communist state! Welfare tribute next?" He followed that with: "Thank God the athletes have arrived! Now we can move on from leftie multi-cultural crap."

Several people tweeted their support for his comments.

Alastair Campbell, former British Labour prime minister Tony Blair's communications chief, retorted on Twitter: "Brilliant that we got a socialist to do the opening ceremony."

Others, including British Paralympian skier Kelly Gallagher, lauded the ceremony's "socialist" values.

Cameron's Downing Street office distanced itself from Burley's comments, tweeting a message from the premier reading: "The opening ceremony has been a great showcase for this country. It's more proof Britain can deliver."

Burley was removed from his job as aide to the transport minister last month after attending a Nazi-themed stag party in a French ski resort.

Ahead of the show, Boyle - whose film "Slumdog Millionaire" won eight Oscars in 2009 - denied he was pushing a political agenda.

"The sensibility of the show is very personal," he said.

"We had no agenda other than... values that we feel are true.

"Not everybody will love that but people will be able to recognise (it) as being honest and truthful really. I felt that very strongly. There is no bullshit in it, and there is no point-making either."

The show began with sections showing idyllic rural Britain being overtaken by the Industrial Revolution, before a 10-minute sequence celebrating the state-run National Health Service (NHS).

Boyle said nobody from the government had expressed any reservations about the NHS section.

"We are presenting it as representing values that we believe in. We believe as a nation in universal healthcare," he said.

"We thought that is a great thing to celebrate, and I defend that."

Britain's first televised lesbian kiss - from a 1993 episode of soap opera "Brookside" - was shown in a fast-moving montage of film and television clips.

Dancers formed the shape of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament badge and other performers represented the struggle of trade union movements.

Post-World War II Caribbean immigration to Britain was also highlighted.

Burley later said: "Seems my tweet has been misunderstood. I was talking about the way it was handled in the show, not multiculturalism itself."

I thought it was one of the best ever.

Wasn't that bad lah. Only the flags + walking in was long (but necessary). Skipped watching Singapore flag held by a non-Singaporean-born. Couldn't bear to catch that.

At least we were reminded that the world-wide-web was invented by UK. Mr Bean's participation with the London Symphonic Orchestra was funny and the forging of Olympic rings was spectacular. Kudos to the person who thought up the immaculate final light-up.

Not the neatest performance but at least didn't have to bear with plastic/all-same faces. Not too show-off like Beijing's and definitely more enjoyable than Atlanta/Athens/Barcelona.

were you watching a re-run of opening ceremony 2008?

2008 was terrible. Does the word "fake" mean anything to you?... fake fireworks, fake singers.. you name it, the Chinese will fake it.

When it comes to putting on a great show, you can't beat the Brits... Bean, Mary Poppins, Tim Berners-Lee, Bradley Wiggins. .... all world Icons. Ang Mohs are the best!

actually enjoyed it. rate it 10 out of 10. much much better than bullshit beijing.
