OYK announces opening of Kallang Polyclinic.

Ong Ye Kung

4 hrs ·
Kallang Polyclinic, our 22nd polyclinic, officially opens in 2022 today.
With a new polyclinic, comes new opportunities to keep our population healthy.
It is co-located with Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital so residents can access different healthcare services.
It has self-service blood pressure machines to allow patients to check their own blood pressure.
It is also the first National Healthcare Group’s polyclinic to develop a fully automated vaccine management system.
It uses a team-based approach to care for patients with chronic illnesses, with very good outcomes. Referrals to specialists and hospital admissions have come down.
I hope Kallang Polyclinic can play a big role in enhancing the health of residents, for a #HealthierSG.
This will be a hub where we build better health in the community.

OYK pays tribute to all mothers.

Ong Ye Kung

15 hrs ·
The mother in the first picture is Teena. She told me that her son Kyler had wanted to meet and take a picture with me. So as an encouragement to the son on his birthday, she waited for me at the void deck with the family and some balloons. I was glad I could be part of the celebration.
The second picture is Siti Aisyah and her mother Mdm Zaiton. When Siti got married and moved out of the house recently, she casually mentioned to her mum that she misses her cooking. Despite her mum’s busy work schedule, she surprised Siti with a bento box of her favourite dishes the very next day.
These are little acts that show a mother’s love. And are just some of the stories of mothers I’ve met in my community, who would go out of the way to love their children in special ways.
Today we pay tribute to all mothers. Happy Mother’s Day!

Singapore’s national COVID tracking may return: minister

Don’t get too happy, contract tracing might be reimplemented again in the future, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said today.

1652194673558.png

It’s been about two weeks since Singaporeans could enter most places without using national COVID tracking systems TraceTogether and SafeEntry, but Ong warned citizens not to delete the apps or toss their tokens just yet.

“We are taking a cautious, ‘step down but not dismantle’ posture for our public health measures. If the situation requires, we will have to step up and reactivate TraceTogether and SafeEntry,” Ong said in parliament today.

Since April 26, most venues do not require TraceTogether or SafeEntry to check in, except for events with more than 500 participants and nightlife establishments.

Ong said that despite Singapore’s current stable COVID – infection rates have fallen sharply – there is a new Omicron sub-variant that has infected at least 2 people locally. Not much is known about the variant, and health officials are working to figure out if it is more infectious and tameable with existing vaccines, he added.

Thus, there is still a “high” possibility of an infection wave with even more variants and that’s why people need to stay on their toes, he said.

Ong also said that those not fully vaccinated can now enter buildings and dine in since measures have been relaxed. While the unvaccinated are now allowed to enter malls, they are still not allowed to dine in and are highly encouraged to remain at home.

Singapore is recording a seven-day average of just more than 3,500 new daily cases, a huge drop from the February peak of nearly 20,000. Hospital resources are no longer stretched, as there are more than enough beds. In total, the nation has reported 1,217,922 cases and 1,352 deaths since the pandemic began.

On occasions, I get nice and cute notes like this from residents who aren’t home when I visit. Puts a smile on my face.
Over the years, we’ve come to a place where there’s mutual understanding, concern and trust. Thank you, Sembawang!

OYK shares an update.

We have been seeing an uptick in COVID-19 cases in recent days. Some members of the public have written to me expressing concerns, while others wonder if it will trigger changes to Safe Management Measures (SMMs).
I thought it would be useful to share an update on this before the long weekend ahead.
The community cases are rising, but not doubling every few days. So there is no evidence of a new wave. The rise is also expected, given that we opened up social activities almost fully since 26 April.
Most cases show mild symptoms and recover uneventfully at home. Our hospitals and ICUs are also not seeing a rise of severe COVID-19 cases.
With strong resilience to the virus due to vaccinations and recovery from past infections, we should be able to see through this uptick of cases, without any adjustments to current SMMs.
Of course, we will continue to monitor closely, as things can change very quickly, especially if a new variant was to emerge. So even as we enjoy this period of respite, we must not let our guard down and should continue to exercise personal and social responsibility at all times.

Ong Ye Kung: COVID-19 cases rising, public express concern if it will trigger changes to Safe Management Measures (SMMs)

Despite Covid-19 community cases in Singapore doubling in a week, from 1,638 cases on May 4 to 3,890 on May 11, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said on Thursday (May 12) that this is not a new wave.

1652448606785.png

“We have been seeing an uptick in Covid-19 cases in recent days. Some members of the public have written to me expressing concerns, while others wonder if it will trigger changes to Safe Management Measures (SMMs),” he said in a Facebook post.

He provided an overview of the situation, noting that community cases are rising but not doubling every few days. “So there is no evidence of a new wave.”

Mr Ong also said that the rise is expected, “given that we opened up social activities almost fully since April 26.”

The Ministry of Health (MOH) reported 3,645 new cases on Thursday, the weekly infection rate at 1.49, down from 1.76 on Wednesday.

The weekly infection rate measures the ratio of community cases for the past week over those in the week before; hence, a rate of more than 1 indicates an increase of new weekly Covid-19 cases.

Amid the surge in cases, Mr Ong said that most show mild symptoms and recovery “uneventfully at home.”

Furthermore, Singapore’s hospitals and intensive care units are not seeing a rise in severe Covid-19 cases.

“With strong resilience to the virus due to vaccinations and recovery from past infections, we should be able to see through this uptick of cases, without any adjustments to current SMMs,” he said.

Authorities will continue to monitor the situation closely, as it could change very quickly, especially if a new variant were to emerge, he added.

“So even as we enjoy this period of respite, we must not let our guard down and should continue to exercise personal and social responsibility at all times,” said Mr Ong.

According to MOH’s report, there are 265 patients in the hospital, including 30 needing oxygen supplementation and seven in ICU.

A week ago, on May 5, there were 231 patients hospitalized, including 18 needing oxygen support and six in the ICU.

Netizens commented on Mr Ong’s post, thanking the minister for the explanation. “Thank you for the explanation and assurance that the situation is under control and being monitored closely,” said Facebook user Yu Lik Ng.

Mr Ong listed some reminders on April 26 as the country further eased Covid-19 measures.

“As we go about our daily activities, here are five things to still remember:

1) Mask is still required indoors. Also a good idea to mask up in crowded outdoor areas.

2) Take your booster when eligible.

3) Test yourself before seeing someone vulnerable e.g. your grandparents.

4) Keep your TraceTogether app or token even if you may not use it very much.

5) Live life, exercise and stay healthy!”

OYK is in Bali.

Arrived on the beautiful island of Bali yesterday for the 15th ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting.
This is our first in-person ASEAN meeting since the start of the pandemic, and a significant milestone as ASEAN collectively learn to live with COVID-19 while keeping our population safe.
I thank my friend and colleague, Minister Budi Sadikin, Indonesia’s Minister of Health, for hosting us to this milestone meeting.
Looking forward to more fruitful discussions over the next two days.

OYK attended a gala dinner.

Ong Ye Kung

1 hr ·

The 15th ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting and Related Meetings wrapped up on a high note this evening with a gala dinner hosted for all delegates.
ASEAN is a close-knit community. While culturally diverse, we share similar aspirations and hope for our people and nation. We are a culturally diverse community of more than 600 million people.
The COVID-19 pandemic has also brought us closer together as we share information, resources and experience. Health Ministries, in particular, went through the same baptism of fire. These are linkages and ties that we want to build on. In our formal and informal conversations, we inevitably share the troubles, pressures and challenges that we respectively went through.
Over various meetings these 2 days, a common conviction runs through – that regional health cooperation is key to enhance our collective preparedness and response to pandemics, whether for new waves of COVID-19 or a new virus.
Many thanks to our Indonesian colleagues for hosting us in beautiful Bali. It was good to finally reconnect face-to-face.
