Many thanks to my friends for all the well wishes. My wife bakes me a cake on this day every year. I always ask for a chocolate cake — which is multi-layered and a lot of work. This year for a change, I asked for simple

chiffon cake. Not the prettiest, but tastes really nice!

This is honestly where my favourite mee rebus can be found in Singapore.
Selling over 50 varieties of dishes, Nur Fah Muslim Corner is run by couple Mr Rosly and Mdm Salbiah. They met as Kampung neighbours when Sembawang was a coastal village, and then became childhood sweethearts.
Having inherited the Kampung recipe from their elders, I’m glad the Kampung legacy of old Sembawang is still alive and thriving.

Read about the snow leopards that died at a zoo in Nebraska, which prompted me to enquire how our animal carers and lions are doing at the Singapore Zoo and Night Safari. Our Zoo gave me a reply, through Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin, who is also the Deputy Chairman of Mandai Park Holdings.

They said that the animal carers are ‘on the mend with only mild symptoms’. Both lion prides ‘are also recovering well’ in their dens, away from public areas. The lions at the Night Safari are ‘bright, alert and doing well, and their diets are being boosted with vitamins and supplements. All the lions continue to eat well’.

OYK updates MTF's latest announcement.

Ong Ye Kung

MTF announced that from Monday, group sizes for dine-in and social gatherings will increase from 2 to 5 persons.
It is a significant move, and MTF assessed that this is the best time to do so.
From the public health viewpoint, the current wave of transmission is subsiding, and it is better to do so now when antibodies are strong because of the booster exercise. Over 22% of our population has received their booster shots, and we are aiming for 50% to be covered by year end.
Further, we are rolling out Vaccination-Differentiated Safe Management Measures at hawker centres and coffee shops, which will reduce the exposure of the unvaccinated to the virus. This makes a huge difference to the number of infected people who will need to be hospitalised, require ICU care or pass on.
So as the rules are relaxed from next Monday, use it to visit parents or grandparents whom you have not visited for some time, or catch up with some old friends. But try to exercise restraint and not make full use of it. We are not out of the woods yet.

No 'significant' easing of COVID curbs in December: Ong Ye Kung

1637416684226.png

SINGAPORE — Singapore's COVID-19 restrictions will not be significantly loosened amid the year-end festivities in December, following the upcoming increase in social gathering and dining sizes from Monday (22 November).

Given the "pent-up demand" to go out and socialise during the year-end festive period, any further relaxing of restrictions could spark off a new wave of infections, said Health Minister Ong Ye Kung during a virtual media briefing by the COVID-19 multi-ministry taskforce (MTF) on Saturday.

"Once we cross into December, there is a certain mood as we move closer to the year-end festivities and there will be pent-up demand to want to go out," said the MTF co-chair.

"We don't want to do an opening move that is significant in the month of December, because social activities will spike, and it can spark off a new wave (of infections)."

Explaining the current move to increase social gathering and dining sizes from two to five, Ong said that it is a "valuable window of opportunity" to allow the public to ease into the festive mood.

He cautioned that such a move will mean more social interactions, which will increase the circulation of the coronavirus. This may result in more daily infection cases and more hospitalisations.

However, the impact of this move on healthcare systems will be counteracted by three factors: vaccine booster-shot administration which is gathering pace; safe recovery measures; and Vaccinated Differentiated Safe Management Measures (VDS).

"If we miss this window and delay opening until next year, protection from boosters against infection and symptomatic diseases may weaken by then, and the case numbers and public health outcomes will likely be worse than if we open up now," Ong said.

Finance Minister and MTF co-chair Lawrence Wong added that the "next series of moves" can likely be considered around end-December, if the overall situation and health care system remain stable.

The plight of migrant workers

In response to a query from Yahoo News Singapore on when Singapore's 300,000 migrant workers can expect fuller freedom of movement, Wong insisted that the city-state has to take an "incremental" approach in easing restrictions on these workers. "After one move, we'll monitor the situation, we'll monitor the effect, and then we'll make another move."

It was announced last Monday that from 3 December, some 3,000 migrant workers will be allowed to go out of their dorms each day, for up to eight hours each time. However, this represents just 1 per cent of all workers, of whom 98 per cent have been fully vaccinated.

Wong added, "We are very aware that our migrant workers need that time and space to go out, and that's why, besides allowing them go out to the community, we also have eased up considerably their time in recreational centres... We'll monitor the effects of (this move) over one or two weeks, and if the situation remains stable, we will continue with this incremental approach."

Since April 2020, some 300,000 migrant workers in Singapore have been living under restricted conditions at purpose-built dormitories and factory-converted dormitories, in a bid to control the spread of the coronavirus. Most are still not permitted to leave except to go to work, or to mix with the general public, even though cases from the community have far outstripped those in the dorms in recent months.

Today marks the first day that groups of 5 can dine-in at selected hawker centres and coffee shops with Vaccination-Differentiated Safe Management Measures (VDS) checks.
I visited #KampungAdmiralty Hawker Centre, operated by NTUC Kopitiam & Foodfare, to see how things are going.
NTUC Foodfare staff were assigned different roles – checking the vaccination status of patrons, issuing stickers to vaccinated persons, managing the queue and controlling the crowd. Entry into the hawker centre was quick and seamless, as many patrons came prepared to show their vaccination status.
Great to also see families and friends catching up over their meals at the hawker centre. Let’s all continue to stay vigilant and play our part to keep each other safe.

I am in Hong Kong at the invitation of my counterpart, for the inaugural Asia Summit on Global Health (#ASGH2021).
Am glad to be able to participate at the Conference, shared our experiences with senior health officials from the region, and met with Hong Kong senior officials and leaders such as Chief Executive Mrs Carrie Lam, Chief Secretary for Administration Mr John Lee, Secretary for Food and Health Prof Sophia Chan, and Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Mr Edward Yau. All of us shared the conviction that the virus cannot stop us from collaborating and connecting, and we will beat the virus together.
Despite being on a controlled itinerary, we managed to get some delicacies delivered to our quarantine hotel!
