Manchester United Season 2012-13

Fletcher sidelined for season

Darren Fletcher will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to resolve his ulcerative colitis condition, Manchester United have confirmed

While United have stressed the move is part of a "planned procedure", they admit it is "frustrating" for the 28-year-old Scotland midfielder, who has made just two short substitute appearances since starting the Premier League win at Reading on December 1.

A United statement read: "Darren Fletcher will be unavailable for the remainder of this season having undergone surgery to resolve his ulcerative colitis condition."

The statement continued: "We wish to stress this was a planned procedure undertaken at the optimal time having achieved a period of sustained good general health, as illustrated by the fact that Darren has trained with the team regularly this season and been available for selection right up to the operation.

"Whilst it is frustrating for both Darren and the club that he won't be able to contribute further during this campaign, this decision has been taken with our full support in the best interests of his long term health and we look forward to him returning next season with this problem firmly behind him.

"We would be grateful if his privacy could be respected at this time and in the coming months in order to aid his recuperation."

They should not have included him in the squad in the first place. This is the third time in 3 seasons that the midfielder will play no part at the business end of the season.

Big game on Sunday against Spurs. Somehow I have a funny feeling Spurs will do a double on us this season.

Awww.... don't be sad red....

Mancini: Players must take responsibility

Roberto Mancini expects his Manchester City players to take responsibility for their 3-1 defeat at Southampton on Saturday.

Mancini conceded the Premier League title race was all but over after the result, which was compounded by Manchester United's 2-0 victory over Everton 24 hours later. United now sit 12 points clear atop the standings, but Mancini has called on his charges to respond.

"When you play football and you are a top player, you should take your responsibility, always," he said. "It's not always the fault of the manager.

"The players should take responsibility - if they have big balls. If not, they can't play in a top team."

The defending Premier League champions also struggled in the Champions League this term, finishing bottom of their group. But Mancini insists he was expecting a tough campaign, particularly after their title-winning feats in recent years.

"For a team like us which has won the title, won the FA Cup, won the Charity Shield after 38 years, it's normal the year after as champions could be difficult," Mancini explained.

"But probably because we did some mistakes in the summer and we didn't improve our team. But now we have good players and I think we shouldn't do a match like this."

Asked if he regretted not making better signings in the summer, he said: "No, no, now we can do nothing about that.

"But in this moment we should do more because we have 12 games, we should get the maximum points we can get, we have the FA Cup and this season is not finished.

"I don't want to see a player like we saw. A player who plays like that should stay at home, not even be on the pitch. Usually, we play well and even when we don't play well we put everything on the pitch but we didn't even for that.

"That's the problem. Only this. They played better than us, they deserved to win, congratulations to Mauricio Pochettino, to Southampton, but I am very disappointed with our performance."

Mancini in United jibe

By MARTIN BLACKBURN

ROBERTO MANCINI says Manchester United have been lucky in opening up their huge lead at the top of the Premier League.

City face a huge task to close their rivals’ 15-point advantage, starting at home to third-placed Chelsea today.

But Etihad boss Mancini reckons United have had the rub of the green.

And he points to December’s Manchester derby when United nicked a 3-2 win through Robin van Persie’s injury-time goal.

Mancini said: “Until now United were lucky with everything. They won a lot of games in the last minutes.”

The two teams are due to meet again at Old Trafford on April 8.

But Mancini added: “If United go forward in the Champions League the last two months will be hard for them.

“They could lose five points in two games before the derby.”

Master vs Pupil but the pupil has better winning records when both lock horns. :p

They were never master and pupil, so it's more like old master vs young master.

And btw, a better nickname and moniker would be "Hulk".
