Transfer update! Man United just need to agree fee with Arsenal for Vermaelen

talkSPORT's top transfer expert Warren Haughton claims Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen's move to Manchester United is on the verge of being completed.

The Gunners star has agreed personal terms with the Red Devils and Haughton believes the Premier League pair just need to agree a fee, believed to be around £11million, for the Belgian.

Speaking to the Weekend Sports Breakfast show, he said: "Arsenal are ready to let Thomas Vermaelen move on. He’s only got one year left on his contract.

"The deal would cost Manchester United around £10-11million. My understanding is that personal terms have been agreed with Manchester United, the clubs just need to agree a transfer fee."

Man Utd have been told they must meet William Carvalho's buyout clause. The Red Devils are currently in talks with the Portuguese side over their star midfielder, and Van Gaal is keen to see him partner Ander Herrera in a new-look team next season.

The 22-year-old has established himself as one of the finest holding midfielders in his country, and Jose Mourinho is also believed to be interested despite already signing Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona.

The Blues have reportedly offered Sporting £11million plus a player on loan, but United are in the driving seat after negotiating deals for Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani in the past.

However they will have to splash the cash if they want to land the Portugal international after Sporting revealed that Carvalho will only leave if his clause is met.

Manchester United: Louis van Gaal gives USA tour assurance

BBC Sport New manager Louis van Gaal will be on Manchester United's summer tour even if the Netherlands reach the World Cup final.

The Reds head to the United States on 18 July for a five-match tour.

However, Van Gaal, 62, could still be in Brazil until 13 July if the Netherlands go all the way.

Assistant Ryan Giggs will take training until Van Gaal returns, but the Dutchman has assured club officials he will be on the flight to Los Angeles.

The Netherlands booked a quarter-final meeting with Costa Rica by beating Mexico on Sunday.

If they overcome the surprise team of the tournament in Salvador on Saturday, it would ensure the Netherlands' involvement continued until at least 12 July given losing semi-finalists must compete in the third-place play-off.

United's non-World Cup players are due to report back for training on Friday, although the first couple of days are taken up with medical tests.

Even if the Dutch lose to Costa Rica, Van Gaal is unlikely to be at the club's Carrington training complex on Monday, leaving Giggs in charge, as he was for the final four games of last season following the dismissal of David Moyes.

Van Gaal has already had an impact at his new club, sanctioning the combined £56m purchase of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw, in addition to new contracts for Patrice Evra and Antonio Valencia.

Three sportswear giants are bidding to secure a world-record kit deal with Manchester United.

Adidas, Nike and Warrior remain in talks with the club over the right to take over when the existing agreement, with Nike, expires next season.

A figure of £600m over 10 years has been discussed, which would dwarf the reported £31m a season Adidas pays to Real Madrid.

United's existing deal with US firm Nike is worth £24m a year.

Germany-based Adidas, who made United's kit throughout the '80s, declined to comment but the BBC understands that the firm are in talks with the club.

Nike and Warrior, the US firm who manufacture Liverpool's kit, both confirmed to BBC Sport that they are also in the running.

As part of the terms of their existing deal, Nike were granted a period of exclusivity to negotiate an extension which expired without a new agreement having been reached.

That opened the door for other companies to bid.

Nike, who will soon release this year's new kit and have been the club's partners since 2002, retain the right to match any other offer.

United, who tour America later this month, declined to comment.

They have signed a number of sponsorship deals including a £120m agreement to rename their Carrington training ground.

Holland coach reckons formation he has used at the World Cup would work at Old Trafford too - but can they find the right centre-backs?

Louis van Gaal plans to bring his Holland World Cup tactics to Manchester United - and play 3-4-3 next season.

The Dutch mastermind has already told his Old Trafford backroom staff that he is looking to use that system more often than not in his new job.

Van Gaal came up with the scheme in the build-up to Brazil 2014 and thinks it is the best way forward for United too.

However, news of the idea has forced an adjustment in the Reds' transfer plans, as they will need three top-notch centre-halves in the team.

And with Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand leaving this summer, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has to recruit a couple of centre-backs who can handle the task.

England international Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, who are not used to that system, will now have extra demands placed on them.

The idea is sure to need a couple of clever and adaptable centre backs, with Borussia Dortmund's Germany international Mats Hummels an even more significant target.

The versatility of Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen would also work in that way of playing - despite his current run of injuries.

There is bonus in moving to 3-4-3 for some United stars: It would suit athletic wing-backs, with new boy Luke Shaw perfect down the left and the re-signed Antonio Valencia also given a boost.

A three-pronged attack also potentially gives Wayne Rooney a lift as insiders reveal Van Gaal sees him, Robin van Persie and Juan Mata as ideal for those roles.

Ryan Giggs says Louis van Gaal will "relish" the challenge as Manchester United boss, after it was announced the Dutchman will take charge of his first game at Old Trafford on 12 August.

The 62-year-old's home debut will be a friendly against Valencia but, before that, Van Gaal and his squad will embark on a tour of the United States.

"He can't wait," said Giggs. "He's not scared about the challenge.

"He's been at Bayern, Barcelona. He has the experience to do it."

Van Gaal will take charge of a squad which finished seventh last term under previous manager David Moyes.

Only 12 months earlier, the club had won a 20th top-flight title in the final season of Sir Alex Ferguson's 26-year reign.

It was claimed Moyes was out of his depth, but United assistant manager Giggs does not believe Van Gaal, who led the Netherlands to the World Cup semi-finals, will be similarly overwhelmed.

"Louis has a clear philosophy and he sticks to that philosophy," said the Welshman. "He won't be afraid of taking over Manchester United. He'll relish it.

"It won't be easy. It never is. But I was excited about how forthright and how clear he was about what he expects from the staff and the players."

Midfielder Darren Fletcher reported a different feel to life on the training ground, stating: "There's a real buzz around the place again."

Van Gaal is yet to experience it himself, however, because of his commitments with the Dutch national team.

Now retired, Giggs was in charge for the start of pre-season training on Monday.

Van Gaal sent new coaches Albert Stuivenberg and Marcel Bout to assist Giggs, although even from South America he still had a significant input.

"Everything's been planned by Louis," he said. "Albert and Marcel know how he works so the blueprint has been prepared by Louis and we're just following it."

Although Netherlands were beaten on penalties by Argentina in Wednesday's World Cup semi-final, they still have another game to play - against hosts Brazil in Saturday's third-place play-off.

Van Gaal is expected to arrive in Manchester early next week.

United's hopes of signing Arturo Vidal this summer have been handed a major boost.

According to the Telegraph, Juventus are lining up a £20million bid for Tottenham's Paulinho, which could pave the way for the Chilean to move to Old Trafford.

Vidal has admitted his future with the club is unclear, alerting new boss Van Gaal who is said to be readying a £40million bid.

Juve are desperate to raise funds and with the club insisting Paul Pogba is going nowhere, Vidal looks to be the man on his way.

Sportswear giant Adidas has signed a £750m deal to make Manchester United's kit for 10 years from next season.

It comes after US rivals Nike decided to end their association at the end of the coming 2014-15 season.

Nike have been paying United £23.5m a year, and the new deal is worth a world record-breaking £75m a season to the Old Trafford club.

Champions League winner Real Madrid's £31m-a-year deal with Adidas was previously the biggest club deal.

Adidas will provide training and playing kit to all of the club's teams. In addition, it will have the exclusive right to distribute dual-branded merchandising products worldwide.

The huge sum involved is only £40m less than the Glazer family paid for club in 2005.

Sales boost
Adidas chief executive Herbert Hainer said the deal would help the firm "to further strengthen our position in key markets around the world".

"We expect total sales to reach £1.5bn during the duration of our partnership," he added.

It will be the first time Adidas has made the Premier League's team's strip for 23 years, since the 1991-92 season.

The announcement comes a day after the German firm, a Fifa World Cup sponsor, provided the playing kit for both the teams in 2014 final, Germany and Argentina.

In midday trade on the German stock exchange, the firm's shares were up by 2.78%.

Other teams supplied by the firm include Bayern Munich, Chelsea, AC Milan, Flamengo and - from the 2015/2016 season - Juventus.

When it announced it was stepping away, a Nike statement said "the terms that were on offer for a renewed contract did not represent good value for Nike's shareholders".

Manchester United did not qualify for this season's Champions League for the first time in 19 years.
