After Securing Juan Mata, Where Should Manchester United Look Now?
By Jamie Spencer on 26 January 2014
Manchester United may have secured the signing of Juan Mata from Chelsea for a club record fee, but the arrival of the just one player will not solve all of the club's problems. David Moyes' squad still seems light in certain key areas, particularly central midfield and defence, while injuries to key players have also not helped. If Moyes chooses to go back into the market this January, as he has said he will try to, which players would be best suited for United as things stand?
Central midfield has long been the biggest issue for Moyes' team this season. United have already signed Mata, which will add much needed creativity to central areas, but there is still a call for an additional player who could play in a deeper role. For that, Moyes' best option is surely Yohan Cabaye. The Frenchman's form has been a major factor behind Newcastle's improved fortunes this season and, being accustomed to the Premier League already, would be an instant fit. His excellent set-pieces would also add an additional weapon. Newcastle have tried to warn off suitors with a £35m price tag, but for a player who cost the Magpies just £5m in 2011, a deal could probably be engineered for less.
Beyond that, United cannot afford to overload on new players in such a key area, with the risk of needing extra time to gel them together, potentially costing them fourth place in the league table. Therefore, arguably as much as additions, Moyes also needs his existing midfield players to return to full fitness and form. Michael Carrick has been in and out of the team with injury, while the highly criticised Marouane Fellaini has yet to show any of the form which made him such a valuable asset for Everton. If the Belgian can get fit and reproduce the form that saw him regularly bully opponents and score 11 league goals from midfield last season, he would unquestionably be a formidable weapon.
There has been no secret that among Moyes' greatest wishes this season is a new left back. United have been linked with several choices since the Scot took over, with Luke Shaw, Fabio Coentrao and Leighton Baines all allegedly in the frame at one time or another. However, given that Patrice Evra is well backed up by Alexander Buttner, United's immediate full back requirements seem more urgent on the other side of the field. Moyes may well choose to move Evra on in the summer, meaning then, rather than now, would be the right time for a new left back.
Piszczek Would be a Dynamic AdditionPiszczek Would Be A Dynamic Addition
At present, Rafael is the club's only recognised right sided full back, with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones 'filling in' when necessary. As good a player as Rafael can be, he still displays rash tendencies, as demonstrated by his reckless two-footed tackle at Stamford Bridge and is often inconsistent. Borussia Dortmund's marauding right back Lukasz Piszczek could be a good option to add extra strength to the position. The Pole has won many admirers over the last few seasons and his desire to get forward would bring additional attacking options to the team. The similarities between the Premier League and the Bundesliga would also help Piszczek settle quicker than a player arriving from Spain or Italy might.
Central defence also remains a concern. With Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic both ageing and struggling for regular fitness, United have often looked frail this season. Moyes has found it difficult to nail down a favourite centre-back pairing with Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans all guilty of inconsistency. United need a strong character who can fit in seamlessly and play every week until May.
Sir Alex Ferguson often had a lot of success signing players already plying their trade in the Premier League and Moyes would do well to follow a similar method. Argentina international Ezequiel Garay has been mentioned, but the Benfica player might take too much time to settle in mid-season. A better option might therefore be Jan Vertonghen of Tottenham. The Belgian was named in the PFA Team of the Year last season, though he has been out of action since December. However, should he regain fitness shortly, Vertonghen would be an outstanding addition to United's back-line, though he would undoubtedly not come cheap.
If United could engineer deals for Yohan Cabaye, Lukasz Piszczek and Jan Vertonghen to go along with the existing capture of Juan Mata, they would suddenly once more have a squad with the quality and strength still able to challenge for honours this season. The important thing to remember when looking at mid-season transfers is that players arriving from abroad where the lifestyle and football is vastly different to England may need too much time to adapt to be immediately effective. These three players not only offer the right quality, but would fit in quickly and efficiently and are certainly individuals that Manchester United and David Moyes should be looking at to strengthen in the remainder of the transfer window.
