Malaysia Can't

There's a designated public park for that. It's called Hong Lim. All registrations are approved. All indoor political events are approved too. That's legitimate. In fact, there's one going on right now. CSJ and GMS are among the speakers. Suka-suka protest outside Parliament is illegitimate and undignifying. Win the voters over and get into Parliament!

Protest? A walk is a protest?

What wld u say if the event is at Hong Lim Park?

Why was this approved?

"the Consumer Association of Singapore (CASE) conducted a protest march on 18 Mar 07."

Because it is a PAP sanctioned protest?

Scores of CASE protesters assembled outside Parliament House beside the Singapore River.

Protesters wearing printed T-shirts with the words "Walk with CASE, World Consumer Rights Day" and carrying placards with various messages.

Dr Teo Ho Pin, former CASE president, Mayor and current MP, protesting with other participants.

Hundreds of CASE demonstrators marching through the streets.

A stage was even set up and a ceremony of sorts seems to be taking place involving another PAP MP Mr Yeo Guat Kwang , who is also the current president of CASE.

I believe that a World Wildlife or Greenpeace march would have been approved also, as long as the security and logistics are satisfied. These are social issues with nothing to do with politics. However, politics is by definition adversarial, just as religious or racial issues would be rejected. Anyway, what's so good about protests? I've lived in US and Thailand got sick and tired of all these, at certain times with life and limbs in danger. If you lose an election, you've lost. Try to win it next time if you want. Resorting to street protest is bad loser behaviour. If you don't believe in election, then don't participate in it. Try raising a private militia for armed uprising. I'm neither supporting nor encouraging any such thing of course, just pointing out the futility of it all if you can't convince the majority in a civil way, that's what democracy is all about.

I have seen HK Police in action and I have seen SPF in action. I say HK Police is better.

Interesting. Care to share? I know one area where S'pore Police seek advice from HK counterparts - triads. HK officers give such talks to our chaps on a regular basis. No idea if our chaps are invited to HK to give whatever talks.

You aint seen nothing yet. A lot of them are over here.

I have been in Malaysia for a few days.

Enjoyed the drive..but experienced many unpleasant happenings in Malaysia.

The Traffic Police stopped me along NS Highway. Claimed that I was speeding and threatened me with a summon of RM600. Alternatively asked me to settle the problem there for RM400. Was eyeing my lustfully. Gave me goosebumps. What kind of law enforcement police Malaysia has?

Had dinner at Malacca. The shop grossly overcharged and added additional prices..very unethical...truly third world mentality.

Stayed at Highland Hotel but most staff could only understand Malay.

Malaysia is going downhill fast..Malaysia cannot!!!

Hong Lim Park is designated a Speaker's Corner. It is there for people to SPEAK, not to stage protests or demonstration - or play soccer or cricket while people are speaking.

I noticed that in Hyde Park, the police patrol the area to ensure that the crowd is peaceful. You may shout on top of your voice on top of a soapbox - about communism, lack of democracy or human rights and it's alright. But the audience who provoke or challenge the speakers to cause annoyance is usually led away by the police. Not too sure what happens to these fellowa after that; heard that it is an offence.

Designation of a small corner for allowing others to speak is a 3rd world Joke and sinkies are very capable in making a joke of themselves daily and even put themselves in history as a total joke.

Everyone has the right to speak where ever they wanted. Only a control freak and a coward will make a clown of themselves by doing this and a funnier clown comes in to praise it and even admit speaking out is an offence.

Which country in the world will regard speaking out is an offence.

China
North Korea
Myanmar
Singapore

All these countries are branded as 3rd world in regards to freedom of speech.

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

I guess without interference of securing the warm seat of the sinkie scum in white.

How come the Singaporeans For Democracy's application for an event at Hong Lim Park was denied?

I think they apply the permit for the event at the wrong department. Hong Lim Park is for people who want to speak there. If they want to organise a demonstration or protest march to Parliament House, then go elsewhere to apply for a permit - it's a different event. Hong Lim Park should not be used as a staging post - that is fraud!

If you want to appy for a bbq event in Changi beach, then go to NPark to apply for the bbq permit.

There is no need to apply for any permit when staging a protest to throw out those who create the permit rule in the first place.

The police, army, civil service and judiciary all must identify with the government of the day. If SDP becomes government and passes a repeal to all death penalty offences, then the judge cannot sentence anyone to death. If NSP becomes government and passes a law that public procession and demonstration need no permits, then the police shall allow public procession and demonstration. If WP becomes government and disband NTUC into independent unions, then it shall be.

An example is Cpt. GMS himself. As a citizen, he's an opposition leader, Sec-Gen. of NSP. But when called up for reservist, he takes and executes orders from the chain of command all the way up to MINDEF, headed by a PAP minister, TCH.
