Reach austin 12am yesterday. Slight jam, clear custom abt 45 mins from spore to tebrau. No scanning. Had supper at austin. . One of those mobile hawker, steamboat/bbq, food on sticks. Each rm1 (eg yong tau fu) to rm2.5. . Open daily from 8pn to 3~4am. Near big mouth karaoke. Very nice.

Having breakfast now (1020am) at austin E&Y 24 hrs prata. Great pratas and other indian food @ reasonable price.

Bottleneck at Johor 'not caused by biometric system'

JOHOR BARU, Malaysia - It is unfair to blame the biometric system at the causeway and the Second Link for causing the congestion at the entry points since early this month.

Home Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Mahmood Adam said the congestion only happened at both checkpoints in Johor but not at the other 67 checkpoints nationwide.

"The problem is due to the high human traffic volume and movement daily between Johor Baru and Singapore," he told The Star after attending a closed-door briefing at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration Quarantine Complex (CIQ) in Bukit Chagar yesterday.

Mahmood said the ministry was looking at ways to improve the system at the causeway and the Second Link to reduce congestion and improve the flow of visitors into Malaysia.

He said among other steps that would be taken included installing extended biometric scanners at the Immigration officer booths so that those in cars would not have to come out to have their fingerprints taken as being practised currently.

For investors, Mahmood said the ministry hoped to issue special passes which would be inserted into their passports without having to be scanned additionally.

He said the ministry was in talks with the Iskandar Regional Development Authority on the matter.

Mahmood also advised foreigners who had been given the Malaysia Automated Clearance System (MACS) for easier entry into the country via the causeway and the Second Link to make full use of it.

Mahmood said presently more than 100,000 foreigners, mostly Singaporeans, had been issued with the MACS and they could use dedicated lanes to pass through Immigration

M'sia identifies key areas to attract foreign students

JOHOR BARU - Intense competition among countries in the region to draw foreign students does not worry Malaysia, which has identified four core disciplines to gain an advantage.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the four disciplines are Islamic banking and finance, advanced engineering, hospitality and health sciences.

He said Malaysia had its own strength and capabilities to become the region's leading higher education hub.

"We have identified the four core disciplines that will put Malaysia in a better position to attract foreign students to our public and private universities," he said when opening the KFCH International College in Bandar Datuk Onn here yesterday.

Khaled said by focusing on the four key areas rather than in too many disciplines, Malaysia would be able to strengthen and develop its position as a higher learning education hub.

He said it was cheaper for foreign students to study in Malaysia than in developed countries that were facing rising costs of higher education.

Khaled said China and India were also having problems catering to a higher number of students entering universities and had sent them overseas to further their studies.

He urged public and private universities in Malaysia to look at drawing more Chinese and Indian students.

Currently, about 90,000 foreign students are studying at public and private universities in Malaysia and the Government hopes to increase the number to 150,000 by 2015.

On another matter, Khaled said the Government had not frozen the intake of new medical students but would not approve the opening of new medical schools in the next five years

Faster way to scan fingerprints

JOHOR BARU: Visitors to Malaysia coming through the Causeway and the second link will be assured of faster immigration clearance from today as they no longer have to alight their vehicles to have their fingers scanned under the biometric fingerprint scanning system.

They just have to sit back in their vehicles as the scanners at the Immigration booths could be extended to reach the hand of every passenger and driver for them to have their fingers scanned while Immigration officers on duty will verify and stamp their passports as usual.

Immigration personnel have been working around the clock this week to extend the cables connecting every scanner and computer system by 1.7 metres to enable them to be pulled out to reach every vehicle.

Immigration director-general Datuk Alias Ahmad said the hassle-free measure would significantly reduce the time needed for Immigration clearance.

To facilitate the process, Immigration officer will be stationed outside each booth to supervise the scanning process and assist visitors who are new to the system.

"These are among the proactive measures we have adopted in preparation for a possible influx of visitors during the weekends and public holidays. It will be implemented from today."

The security system is being implemented at 96 entry points natiowide from June 1 to curb transboundary crime and terrorist threats.

Previously, foreigners only had to have their passports stamped to enter Malaysia.

Last weekend, the system was too slow to cope with the influx of visitors from Singapore in conjunction with the republic's school holidays.

This slowed down immigration clearance at both the checkpoints at the Sultan Iskandar Building at the Causeway and the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex at the second link.

The long and slow traffic leading to the checkpoints from Singapore, disrupted travelling and holiday plans of many Singaporeans and other visitors.

However, immigration clearance at both entry points was reported to be stable during weekdays.

Alias said the fingerprint scanning system had been upgraded to expedite the scanning process.

"For long term measure, we would like to advise foreigners to apply for the Malaysia automated clearance system at any Immigration office for faster Immigration clearance.

"Under the system, foreigners only have to scan their index fingers during the first visit to the country. For subsequent entry, they only need to have their passports stamped.

Anyway by then they would have finished finger printing most of the visitors.

A substantial data banki would be with them by then.

Imagine if at a later date Spore implements finger printing??

We would be doing Mas Selamat all over again.

yeah best to be firm with kids.... I agree to that.... No pampering and giving carrots all the time....

Just tell them that they have to get up and get into the car or later get up and get out of the car.... irrespective of how sleepy they are.... No wailing or throwing tantrums....

wah? For me if its 7am plus, I will forget about coming in to JB already. Usually do it before 530am if possible. Kids? Just slap them and get them to drink some coffee and wash up.. if no use, simply carry them and throw them into the car to sleep. thats the best!

Today read the news. The malaysia government gota make the wire for the scanner longer to allow passengers to stay in their cars to thumbprint. Arhh i think they are missing the point. The massive jam is a result of the thumb print in the first place. Even if u have 10 scannersi in one counter, the process will slows down the traffic.

want to ask you AP did you start your pine tree from sappling or a transplant or was it from baby tree? I suddenly have the urge when I saw a house or two having it and I thought it was lush!

In Johore itself i have seen several types of pines....

So intoxicating......

I was hell bent on this...

But this is the easiest part.....

The harder part is finding a nursery and then finding the pine you like in that nursery.... If not you gotta visit several nurseries until you find the one with the pine of your choice.... This is the tedious and rather laborious process....

1) Now if you try to grow them from seeds/tiny sapplings this is possible. It will be worth the effort as well as you can see the plants growing before your eyes like a baby.... But it is a tiring process no doubt. Finding the right seeds may not be easy while finding the right sappling may be easier...

2) In my case i got 3 foot pine trees. I wanted them to mature soon.... I could not wait to raise them up from the sappling stage.... i got 10 pine trees. Paid a bit more cause the guy knew i was a singaporean. Hardly managed to secure any discount from him.

I decided to get the nursery to plant the trees for me as well cause they are skilled at doing it.

After spending on the plants it would be silly of me to try and plant it and lose the plant. So i got them to plant it....

I even asked them to provide a stick to ensure that the plant grows straight up and not wayward....

Ofcourse they were not interested in doing all that....

And then comes the even more tiring part....

Tending to the plants....

I was in a hurry to plant them closer to the rainy season last year. I ended up planting them in Sept or Oct. Cant remember exactly.... Cause i was on a 45 day holiday from mid Nov to early Jan. Hence i needed the rains. Therefore i chose the Nov Dec period.....

Ofcourse the plants are bigger now and can manage to live for a week to ten days without rain although they may look a bit wilted and worn. but surely wont die......

But those early days were crucial when they were transferred from nursery to rough conditions.....

I chose 10 pines... I felt i needed 13.....

But i cant get the additional 3 now since the sizes would be different..

So you must calculate how many you need and get them at the same time.....

In addition you gotta protect them from insects/fungus/ant attacks during the early period.

Proper nutrition is essential too like compost/ N-K-P mix etc....

and yes a bucket or more of water a day....

10! I am only thinking of 1 hurhur, cos there is not much land. it will be quite a sight to see 10 fully matured pine trees in the garden.
