i think the msia side all this time felt very unfair and very tulan.
some johore high ranking fellow requested some years back for a levy, it was rejected.
again some road builders asked to collect toll for the use of EDL, it was rejected.
so now they tak boleh tahan leow. spore now increase so high, they red eye now.
so by hook or by crook must raise it now now now (bang table)!

For a govt, u have to govern by rational logic and fairness like Singapore (at least appear to do so). You can't rule by revenge and greed; u are bound to fail long term and lose your grounds with your own people. The opposition party is going to attack and gain political mileage on that.

I read about how one goondo Malaysia ( Chinese as usual ) who asked ALL Malaysians to return home to Malaysia and make "Singapore collapse"

He is either retard or born with a tumour in his brain.

Singapore economy will suffer that I know if the Malaysians leave but the locals gota take up dirty jobs, which the locals have been quietly doing since Independence ( look at those in their 50s or 60s who toil daily )

The Malaysians I know for sure will starve to death. No way you can survive on a RM 1500 monthly salary nowadays.

News of VEP to enter Malaysia is a fact. The issue is how much. It can be either RM 1 entry to RM 1000 per entry.

But the news of the increase in tolls at causeway has yet to find its way to Singapore and major Malaysia press. So I am not sure if its real

If only we had some road connectivity with Indonesia.

Yes ur right below.

Sorry hor what the Malaysia govt did or roll out we have no right to criticize. But what I know if that the Singapore govt is giggling fro behind the scene while issuing statements showing " concern " that Malaysia is doing tit-for-tat.

What the Malaysia govt do ( the VEP ) could potentially stop the flow of a few hundred millions of Singapore dollars into Malaysia economy and thereby boost the Singapore economy to make it much stronger.

And you know what? The PAP don't even need to stop Singaporeans from crossing over. The other side is doing it for them!

Power?

that's what we think.

What they think is tht their domestic economy is great.

All they need to do is look back at wht JB was 8 -10 yrs ago.

Cos the M'sia gov wish to see lesser & lesser S'porean visiting to their country.. Thereafter everywhere poor business.. Many retail business close shop.. Less S'porean buying their pty.. etc etc haha

Here you go:

http://www.straitstimes.com/news/asia/south-east-asia/story/malaysia-ups-toll-charges-jb-checkpoint-singapore-cars-affected-2014

From Aug 1, all motorists will have to pay higher vehicle entry fees once they pass through the Johor Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex to and fro Singapore and Johor Baru, a move that is likely to upset Malaysians working across the Causeway.

The works ministry had on Friday announced a revision in toll charges for all vehicles, except motorcycles, passing through the CIQ complex, otherwise known as the Sultan Iskandar Building, without explaining why. The CIQ complex is the border checkpoint near the Johor Causeway.

Currently, private cars entering Johor from Singapore only pay a one-way charge of RM2.90 (S$1.13), irrespective of whether they are locally- or foreign-registered.

But when the new charges kick in, cars will pay a total of RM16.50 for a day trip to Singapore and back, while buses pay RM13.30 to and fro Singapore. Taxis will be charged RM8.20 per two-way trip.

Finally concrete stuff.

The above news is similar to the one below which first appeared before EDL opened.

This means it was planned long back and implemented only now.

Hopefully no VEP on top of this.

JOHOR BARU: Motorists using the Causeway to travel between Malaysia and Singapore may soon have to pay five times more in toll charges.

Currently, motorists using the Causeway pay a toll only when driving from Singapore to Johor Baru. Cars pay $1.20 at the Singapore end and RM2.90 (S$1.20) at the Malaysia end.

Sources said the revised toll proposed was RM6.20 for cars one way, although this has yet to be confirmed. Besides the RM6.20 toll, drivers will have to pay RM1.45 to highway operator PLUS. This means the total toll is RM7.65 one way, which works out to RM15.30 to leave and return to Malaysia, they said.

Past reports have suggested that the revised toll to be levied at the Causeway is meant to pay for the new, toll-free Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL), an 8.1km highway linking the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) facility in Johor Baru directly to the North-South Expressway. Even if motorists do not use the EDL, they would still have to pay the toll as the collection will be done inside the CIQ Complex.

Scheduled to open this month, the RM1.27 billion partly elevated three-lane highway promises to speed up the journey as it bypasses the many intersections - and congestion - on the busy Tebrau Highway and Jalan Pandan that many motorists now use.
The toll has always been a sensitive issue on this side of the Causeway, as many Malaysians commute to Singapore daily to work. Some 50,000 vehicles cross the 1km link every day.

Describing the collection process as absurd, Johor Baru MP Shahrir Samad said it would be unfair to those who did not use the EDL to travel to and from Singapore.

'It is unfair to force everyone using the Johor Baru CIQ to pay the toll,' he said, adding that he hoped the Malaysian Cabinet would review the long-term implications.

Johoreans woke up this morning with the shocking news that effective from 1st August 2014 onwards, the new causeway toll rate would see an unprecedented 570% increase!

Currently, those that come in through the Causeway only have to fork out RM2.90 on the Malaysians’ side, but from 1st August onwards, they would have to pay a combine toll rate of RM16.50, an increase of nearly 5.7 times.

Yesterday, the Works Ministry out of the blue, announced the new toll rate for the Causeway, with all outgoing cars from Johor Baru are required to pay RM6.80 (currently none) and incoming cars RM9.70. For the latter, the calculation should be RM6.80 plus the existing RM2.90.

Besides cars, other vehicles such as vans, transport lorries and buses are also subjected to the increase though with varied rates.
Bear in mind this increase, is over and above the soon to be implemented Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) on the Malaysian side which the figure has yet to be finalized.

The Singapore government had already announced their new VEP rate of SGD35.00 (equivalent to RM90.00) will officially be implemented coincidentally also on 1st August. Furthermore, the Singapore government has always taken the stand that if there is any increase on the toll rate on the Malaysians’ side, they will reciprocate by increasing their rate in tandem with ours. Currently minus the VEP, the Singapore toll rate is SGD 1.20 (equivalent to RM3.00).

To further complicated matter, the new toll rate increase bears remarkable resemblance to the proposed Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL) deal, which was supposedly dealt with by Prime Minister Najib Razak two years ago.

In 2012, the EDL which is owned by Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB), was supposed to commence toll collection for every vehicles that crossed the causeway regardless of not whether the vehicles actually travelled on the EDL. This has led to a huge outcry in Johor Baru area as there is no alternative non-tolled road to the Custom and Immigration Quarantine Complex (CIQ) since all toll charges are collected inside the CIQ.

The public anger was only subsided after the Prime Minister promised that no toll will be levied on the EDL and the government will looks into way to resolve this matter, including the possibility of buying out MRCB for the EDL.

Now suddenly, with this new announcement, the government must explained to us whether the new toll rate increase has anything to do with the EDL and is MRCB still the toll concession holder for the EDL?

If the collection is indeed for MRCB’s behalf, what is the justification for the ridiculous amount of RM16.50 when MRCB already holds a 34 year concession and the entire EDL is only 8.1km long?

PKR Johor is very concern with the new toll rate which will definitely have a strong impact on the local economy especially Southern Johor region and also thousands of Johoreans that commuted to Singapore daily be it for employment or schooling.

We are anticipating some strong reaction and outcry from local communities which are already divided and concerned with the impact of the soon to be enforced VEP.

Already we are facing the problem of oversupply and cooling of property demand in the Southern Johor and Iskandar Regions. We strongly urge the government to reconsider the implementation of the new toll rate and a feasible study must be taken on the viability and amount of the new VEP as not to further burden Johoreans and our economy prospect. – July 26, 2014.

Frankly the state govt is shooting itself in the foot.
If true they really have to see the demographics of the type of Singaporeans going into Johor. If you think the rich and well to do are flocking to Johor, then they are dreaming. Most of Singaporeans going there are not that well off. Just look at the type of cars going in. Just a lot of middle class going in trying to find a good deal and to stretch the dollar.

If the Malaysian govt thinks that such increase is just peanuts to these Singaporeans then they'll find out the hard way that they are wrong.

frankly , nobody cares what class of people (rich, poor, middle income,) are driving in. they just care about collecting $$$. state govt has suddenly realized they can collect $$$ from people driving over. a lot of $$$.

but the obvious question is: won't everyone now go and use the 2nd LINK since it is CHEAPER from 1st Aug??? 2nd link will be jam like f***.

The immediate result of this toll charges increase at 1st link is going to cause the jam at 2nd link to be worsen and that at the 1st link to be lessen as now it will cost roughly the same to use the 1st link with the Sg govt policy of matching whatever amt the Malaysia charges at the CIQ.

The 2nd link will be the preferred way to commute as I believe most of the Malaysian people work in the Jurong area and live in Nusajaya. Those who live in the Skudai and Kempas area who has been using the 1st link as a cheaper entry to Singapore might convert to use the 2nd link after 1st Aug as it would be more convenient for them to do so without the cost savings at the 1st link.

I envisage a lot people who has been currently using the 2nd link to work in Singapore would be late for work during the first few weeks as they adjust to the changes after 1st Aug.

In fact whenever Malaysia make a changes at the CIQ, there will always be a lot of hiccups here and there and unexpected jams at the CIQ are to be expected. As recent as we can recall, when they initially implemented the finger print scanning at the CIQ, long jams occurred and now it is just a white elephant on display. But those parties involved with the finger print systems are satisfied as they they have achieved their own self "internal objectives" while the local taxpayers have already resigned to fate that this is the Malaysia way of governing.
