Serious Little stories for the soul on a Saturday

Lets continue
Christianity:

Some Christian theologians believe that the soul enters the body when the baby takes its first breath outside the womb. They cite Genesis 2.7: “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul”.

However, the Old and New Testaments address the subject of pre-existence in Jeremiah 1:5: “Before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee, and before thy camest forth out of the womb, I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations”. Origen Adamantius, an early Christian theologian and one of the early Church’s most recognized writers, said that each soul was assigned a body as a punishment for looking downward at the corrupt earth.

Buddhism:

Tibetan Buddhism agrees on the subject of pre-existence saying that the “ensoulment” occurs at the moment of fertilization in synchronicity with the consciousness of a being ready to reincarnate.

Sikhism:

pehilai peharai rain kai vanajaariaa mithraa hukam paeiaa garabhaas ||

In the first watch of the night, O my merchant friend, you were cast into the womb, by the Lord's Command.

ouradhh thap a(n)thar karae vanajaariaa mithraa khasam saethee aradhaas ||

Upside-down, within the womb, you performed penance, O my merchant friend, and you prayed to your Lord and Master.

You uttered prayers to your Lord and Master, while upside-down, and you meditated on Him with deep love and affection.

You came into this Dark Age of Kali Yuga naked, and you shall depart again naked.

As God's Pen has written on your forehead, so it shall be with your soul.

Says Nanak, in the first watch of the night, by the Hukam (Order) of the Lord's Command, you enter into the womb. ||1||

The Sikh Holy Book - the only Holy Book that is written and contemporaneous with the Sikh Prophets and the Holy Saints who were either followers of Sufi Islam or Hindus of the time.

Sri Guru Granth Sahib contains hymns of 36 composers written in twenty-two languages employing a phonetically perfected Gurmukhi script on 1430 pages in 511,874 words, 1,720,345 characters, and 28,534 lines. It has been preserved in its original format since its last completion by Guru Gobind Singh in 1705.

22 languages used in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib and yet the compositions make perfect sense.

Again for those who want an insight into the Sikh scriptures can read the English translations for complete understanding and also for those who need to understand the Sikh religion.

The unmatched respect Sikhs have for their Holy Book - The Guru Granth Sahib

Then the question arises - Why do the Sikhs look so fierce.
I have said it before that the Sikhs were formed out of nowhere by God during the turbulent times about 550 years ago when foreigners would invade the regions of the North of present day India and settle down in the Punjab region beginning with Alexander the Great. I will explain in future how this happened.

Mardana and the stone

Mardana and the stone

One afternoon Guru Nanak and his company were resting on the banks of the Ganges at Patna. Mardana was idly inspecting a stone he had picked up along the road, thinking of the vast throngs who had come to hear the Guru. "Master," said Mardana, "you teach a way for every person to find liberation. But many of those who listen still seem to spend much of their time in conflict, and in seeking out excitement and other idle pursuits. Why do they waste away their lives so?"

"Most people don't recognize its value," replied the Guru, "although human life is the dearest treasure on this earth."

"Surly everyone can see the value of life," said Mardana.

"No," said Nanak. "Each man places his own value on things according to what he thinks. A different man with different knowledge will place a different value. That stone you found in the dirt will make a good example. Take it to the marketplace and see what you can get for it."

Puzzled, Mardana took the stone to the marketplace and at a stall that sold sweets asked what the vendor would trade for it. The man laughed. "Go away, you're wasting my time."

He next tried a produce seller. "I have paying customers to wait on," said the grocer. "I'll give you an onion for it just to get you out of here."

Mardana tried several more shops with no better response. Finally he came to the shop of Salis Raj, the jeweler. Salis Raj's eyes opened wide when he saw the stone. "I'm sorry," he said, "I don't have enough money to buy your gem. But I will give you a hundred rupees if you will let me look at it a while longer."

Mardana hurried back to the Guru to tell him what had happened.

"See," said Guru Nanak, "how when we are ignorant we mistake a valuable gem for a worthless stone. If someone had told you its value before you knew what it was, you would have thought they were crazy. Such a jewel is human life, and whatever you've traded for it, that is what is yours."

----- So, human life form is a precious gift we all have been given after many many lifeforms.
Let us not waste this opportunity. Always pray whatever your religion - for the well being of all.

This is a beautifully sung rendition by the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan of Guru Nanak's universal message.
Love watching the yogi who is in such deep intense devotion, that I had to repeat this message again.

This is an Interfaith Hymn from the Guru Granth Sahib which promotes tolerance towards every faith and religion,
peace, love and goodwill. This message of pluralism and interfaith harmony amongst the world faiths is unique. The Hymn is as follows:

"koee bolai raam raam koee khudhaae ||
Some call the Lord 'Ram, Ram', and some 'Khuda'.

koee saevai guseeaa koee alaahi ||1||
Some serve Him as 'Gusain', others as 'Allah'.

kaaran karan kareem ||
He is the Cause of causes, and Generous.

kirapaa dhhaar reheem ||1||
He showers His Grace and Mercy upon us.

koee naavai theerathh koee haj jaae ||
Some pilgrims bathe at sacred shrines, others go on Hajj to Mecca.

koee karai poojaa koee sir nivaae ||2||
Some do devotional worship, whilst others bow their heads in prayer.

koee parrai baedh koee kathaeb ||
Some read the Vedas, and some the Koran.

koee oudtai neel koee supaedh ||3||
Some wear blue robes, and some wear white.

koee kehai thurak koee kehai hi(n)dhoo ||
Some call themselves Muslim, and some call themselves Hindu.

koee baashhai bhisath koee suragi(n)dhoo ||4||
Some yearn for paradise, and others long for heaven.

kahu naanak jin hukam pashhaathaa ||
Says Nanak, one who realizes the Hukam (Order) of God's Will,

prabh saahib kaa thin bhaedh jaathaa ||5||
knows the secrets of his Lord Master."

Sikh Gurus have propagated the message of "many paths" leading to the One God and ultimate salvation for all souls who tread on the path of righteousness. They have supported the view that proponents of all faiths can, by doing good and virtuous deeds and by remembering the Lord can certainly achieve salvation.

The students of the Sikh faith are told to accept ALL leading faiths as possible vehicle for attaining spiritual enlightenment provided the faithful study, ponder and practice the teachings of their prophets and leaders.

The Sri Guru Granth Sahib says: "Do not say that the Vedas, the Bible and the Koran are false. Those who do not contemplate them are false." (SGGS Ang 1350).

Most of the 15 Bhagats that contributed to the Sri Guru Granth Sahib were non-Sikhs and belonged to faiths including Hinduism and Islam.

Sikhs have always being eager exponents of interfaith dialogue and will not only accept the right of other to practise their faith but have fought and laid down their lives to protect this right for others.

So much so that the Ninth Sikh Guru did something unparalleled in history. He as a founder of one religion laid down His life for the right of people to practise a different faith altogether.

At a time of religious persecution, Guru Tegh Bahadar hearing the pleas of the Hindu Kashmiri Pandit, gave His life protecting the right of Hindus to practise their religion.

For these reasons, the Sikhs have practised their faith as an Interfaith religion and take a lead in uniting all the different peoples and religions of the world so that together peace and prosperity can be found for all the peoples of this Globe and the suffering of the poor of the Third world can be properly addressed together.

The message of unity of the faiths is summed up in this quotation from the Guru Granth Sahib: "One who recognizes that all spiritual paths lead to the One shall be emancipated. One who speaks lies shall fall into hell and burn. In all the world, the most blessed and sanctified are those who remain absorbed in Truth." (SGGS Ang 142)

-------- The Sikhs therefore encourage a Muslim to be a good Muslim, a Hindu to be a good Hindu and a Christian to be a good Christian.

Again the Universe as explained in Sikhism

Table1: Answers to Hawking’s questions available in Guru Nanak’s hymns

Hawking's QueriesExplained in Guru Nanak hymns
1Did the universe have natural boundaries? (Hawking: p.5) Whether the universe is limited in space? (Hawking: p.8)The Lord's creation is limitless. The bounds of His creation and their end are limitless. (SGGS:p.5)
2.Were the stars static or moving? (Hawking : p.6)"Lord's fear moves the sun and the moon. They travel myriads of miles without an end." (SGGS: p.464)
3.a) Has the universe existed forever or was created at finite time in the past? (Hawking :p.6) b) Is the universe expanding or contracting? (Hawking: p.6) c) Is the universe eternal and unchanging? (Hawking(a): p.6) What could have caused the stars to turn on in the first place? (Hawking: p.7) What was the first cause of creation of the universe? (Hawking: p.8) Did the God create the universe? (Hawking: p.9) Is it right to imagine that the God created the universe at the instant of the big bang? (Hawking: p10)With one word (bang) thou (the Lord) didst effect the world’s expansion and whereby millions of rivers (of galaxies) began to flow. (SGGS: p.3) We find these answers: 1: The universe did not exist forever. 2. It was created at a finite time in the past. 3. The universe has been expanding ever since its origin 4. The universe is continuously changing and not static. 5. The stars were formed with the expansion of energy. 6. The Lord created the universe with one sound (bang!)
4.When was the universe created?(Hawking: p.8)None can tell the time of creation except the Creator. (SGGS: p.3)
5Whether the universe had a beginning in time? (Hawking: p. 8) What did God do before He created the universe? (Hawking: p 9) Did time start with big bang? (Hawking: p9)For countless ages, there was utter darkness. There was no earth and sky. The Infinite Lord's will alone was pervasive. There was neither day, nor night, nor moon, nor sun. The Lord sat in profound meditation…..There was no hell, nor heaven, nor death, nor time." (SGGS: p.1035) "Time originated from sun" (SGGS: p.357) Universe thus did not have the beginning in time.
6Have Newton's theory of gravitation and Einstein's general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics provided the right answer to the beginning, existence and ending of the universe? (Hawking: p 9-12)No. They have not. Guru Nanak has explained the beginning, existence, expansion and end of universe clearly as follows: With one word the Lord created the universe and started the expansion of the universe into millions of rivers (of galaxies) (SGGS: p.3).He created the universe smoothly (SGGS: p.930) The existence of the universe is as per Lord's Will and will end when He so wills. (SGGS: p.1-2)
7Why are we on earth? (Hawking :p.14)We are on earth to perform according to His Will.
8Where did we come from? (Hawking: p.14)We came from the True Lord and our ultimate aim is to merge wherefrom we came i.e., into the True Lord.

How did Guru Nanak come up with the concept of the Universe and its origin?

Guru Nanak

Guru Nanak

Modern Scientists
1Origin of universe
a) “For countless ages, there was utter darkness. There was no earth and sky. There was neither day, nor night, nor moon, nor sun. The Lord sat in profound meditation. There was no hell, nor heaven, nor death, nor time." (SGGS, p.1035)
b) "The Lord Himself was in a state of nothingness from where He came into existence Himself. There was nothing of the universe at that time. ( SGGS: p.1035)
c) With one word (bang) the Lord effected the worlds' expansion whereby millions of rivers (of galaxies) began to flow. (SGGS: p.3)
d).He went on creating the entire nature creating nothingness from nothingness. (SGGS: p.1037)
(e) The Lord started creating regions and the universes from unmanifest to manifest. (SGGS:p.1036).
Origin of Universe
Gregg Easterbrook "Something made an entire cosmos out of nothing."
Francis Collins: “The universe came into being out of nothingness, approximately 14 billion years ago.”
Prof.Abdus Salaam: In the first moment of time, everything in the universe was compressed into an unbelievable dense form. So crushed was the matter that Physicists have to start the clock of time some few moments after zero because the law of nature will not extend to that point of infinite temperature and mass.
In 1929, Edwin Hubble made observation that wherever you look, distant galaxies are moving rapidly away from us. In other words the universe is expanding. This means that at earlier times objects would have been closer together. In fact it seemed that there was a time, about ten or twenty thousand million years ago, when they were all at exactly same place and when, therefore, the density of the universe was infinite. This discovery finally brought the question of the beginning of the universe into the realm of science. (Hawking : p.9)
2All the five elements were created from nothingness.( SGGS:p.1038) He further explained how the Lord created the universe from nothing very vividly on SGGS: pp.1037-1038) Everything is created out of Him alone. (SGGS :p.223)
There is only One Lord who created the entire universe. ( SGGS:p.1188) "Time originated from sun"(SGGS, p.357)
About the creation of life, Guru Nanak explained, "The physical body is created by the union of semen and blood and the life is created by the union of air, water and fire. He is doing this wonderful play by creating this world of materialism and love. (SGGS:p.1026)
A set of theories of the universe known as the big bang theories satisfiy the cosmological principle. Basically, these cosmologies say that once upon a time there was a great big bang that began the universe. From that moment onwards the universe expanded.
Modern astronomical observations indicate that the universe came into existence roughly 10,000 million years ago, from a huge ball of fire tremendously hot and very dense indeed.
Allen Sandage: The big bang can be understood only as a "miracle." “..the world is too complicated in all its parts and interconnections to be due to chance alone."
Hawking: Scientists have failed to describe the universe.
Georges Lemaître: "Existence began with the detonation of a "primordial atom" of infinite density."
3Unlimited Expanse of the Universe
a) The spread of the universe is limitless. Man is not alone in the universe. No one knows how much is the spread of universe. (SGGS: p.9) No one knows his end. (SGGS: p.469)There are millions of regions and nether lands. These are beyond my calculations.Billions are the airs, waters and fires. Billions are the countries and earths. Billions are the suns, moons and planets. (SGGS: p.176).The Lord created the physical world in numerous varieties of colours. He goes on creating the universe the way His Greatness is. (SGGS: p.6)
Unlimited Expanse of the Universe
French biologist Jacques Monod wrote, "The ancient covenant is in pieces: man knows at last that he is alone in the universe's unfeeling immensity; out of which he emerged only by chance."
Hubble's observations suggested that there was a time, called the big bang, when the universe was infinitesimally small and infinitely dense. Under such conditions all the laws of science, and therefore all ability to predict the future, would break down. If there were events earlier than this time, then they could not affect what happens at the present time. Their existence can be ignored because it would have no observational consequence. One may say that time had a beginning in the big bang, in the sense that earlier time simply would not be defined. (Hawking : p. 10-11)
4The entire universe is on the move "In Lord's fear is the sun and in Lord's fear is the moon. They move myriads of miles without an end." (SGGS: p. 464)Galileo; The Earth rotates on its axis every day and revolves around the sun once a year.
5We get the Truth about the True Lord only by getting tuned to Him. He can be seen in the three worlds (the entire universe) through the truth of true Lord's Name." (SGGS: p.56-57)Einstein: "The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead. His eyes are closed."
6Even if I have millions of tons of paper and have ink which never finishes writing, moving with the velocity of winds; the writing which I continue reading and get attachment to the Lord; even then I cannot appraise Thee (The Lord).Nobel Prize Winner Steven Weinberg, "The more the universe seems comprehensible, the more it also seems pointless.” An expanding universe does not preclude a creator, but it does place limits on when he might have carried out his job! (Hawking: p. 9-10.)
7Binding together air, water and fire the Lord has created the body fortress. To it the Creator has fixed the nine doors. In the tenth gate is the abode of the Indiscernible Infinite Lord. (SGGS: p.1036)Hoyle declared, "The probability of life originating at random is so utterly miniscule as to make the random concept absurd."
8Only the one who can be as higher than the Lord; can understand Him." (SGGS; p.24)The Lord watches all beings while the beings cannot see Him. This is the greatest wonder. (Japuji)."Sigmund Freud, "Man exalts the image into a deity and makes it into something contemporary and real. The effective strength of this mnemonic image and persistence of his need for protection jointly sustain his belief in God.”
9Through the true knowledge, meditation on True Lord's name and living a truthful life, the enlightenment of the truth occurs. (SGGS: p.223) The worldly attachments and detachments are the two sides. The faith is the deciding factor between the two.Pope, John Paul II declared that "Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to contemplation of the truth."
Einstein said, "Religion without science is blind; science without religion is lame."
10If God shows mercy then one remembers Him. His soul is softened and He remains absorbed in the Lord's love. He makes his soul one with the Supreme soul. His mind's duality is reabsorbed in the mind. By Guru's Grace the lord is obtained. (SGGS: p.661)Francis Collins, Director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, insists that "a lot of scientists really don't know what they are missing by not exploring their spiritual feelings."

Your thoughts at the moment of death would determine what form you will take in your next life.

Your thoughts at the final moment will be and in fact are a reflection of what you been upto throughout your life.

A person who pursues wealth all his life without a thought of others will be reborn a serpent.

Dote on your children leaving aside everything else and you will be reborn a sow.

Thinking throughout your life about women and sex, well your next life will be that of a prostitute.

Your life spent on remembering the Lord and in the process you serve humanity will result in you in attaining union with God.

If you do not believe this try it out and see what you will become in your next life.

Guru Har Rai Ji on the importance of reciting Baani! (hymns from the Sikh Holy Book)

One time someone asked Guru Har Rai a question about this. They asked, “Guru ji, may I ask a question?” Of course the Guru lovingly allowed the question, “We always sing so much Gurbani. Sometimes we don’t understand what we are singing. Is there any use in singing these holy words when we don’t know what they mean?”

Guru ji didn’t answer at that moment, he just smiled and waited till he could teach by showing. Rather than just preaching to us, Guru ji always teaches us through experience.

He waited a few days until everyone was riding somewhere together on their horses. Guru ji had them all stop and asked, “Do you see that pot over there?” “Yes, my Guru, that broken pot on the ground? Yes I see it!” “Go bring a piece of the pot.” One of the Sikhs brought a piece of the clay pot over. The pot used to have butter in it, ghee actually. It had been laying in the sun and the ghee had melted into the sides of the pot. The shiny ghee left a streak down the inside of the piece.

Guru ji explained, “This is what happens when we sing Gurbani.” The Sikhs wondered what he meant by that. He continued, “Even when we don’t understand Gurbani… when we sing it with devotion… it still sticks to our hearts, just as the ghee stuck to this pot.“ They began to understand why he had them bring the greasy piece of pot over, "Someday the sunlight of knowledge will come to our minds and then, just like this ghee, it will melt… and the Gurbani in our hearts will turn to wisdom.”

Guru ji showed them the great benefit of Gurbani, “Even if we don’t understand it, Gurbani is the seed of our liberation.”

I was going through my earlier posts here and was amazed at the wonderful moral stories humans have come up with like this one posted initially.

Another beautiful Sufi moral story.

Outward appearances are just that-outward appearances.

It is what you have inside you that counts.

The Dog, The Stick, and the Sufi

Spiritual Story by Idries Shah

A man dressed as a Sufi was walking along one day when he saw a dog on the road, which he struck hard with his staff.

The dog, yelping with pain, ran to the great sage Abu-Said.

Throwing himself at his feet and holding up his injured paw, he called for justice against the Sufi who had maltreated him so cruelly.

The wise one called them together. To the Sufi, he said: "O heedless one! How is it possible for you to treat a dumb animal in this manner? Look at what you have done!"

The Sufi answered: "Far from its being my fault, it is that of the dog. I did not strike him from a mere whim, but for the reason that he had fouled my robe."

But the dog persisted in his complaint.

Then the peerless one addressed the dog: "Rather than waiting for the Ultimate Compensation, allow me to give you a compensation for your pain."

The dog said: "Great and wise one! When I saw this man garbed as a Sufi, I was able to conclude that he would do me no harm.

Had I seen instead a man wearing ordinary dress, I would naturally have given him a wide berth.

My real mistake was to assume that the outward appearance of a man of truth indicated safety.

If you desire his punishment, take away from him the garment of the Elect.

Deprive him of the costume of the People of Righteousness..."

Many of you may not have even heard of the Sufis.

A simple and beautiful moral story.
Many pray to God to help them now and then.
When you see a poor man asking for some change or someone in need give him what you can afford.
Do not be like the very very rich and do not move away.
Remember the poor soul is also praying to God for help and all our accounts here are recorded.

Story of the Leper, the Bald Man and the Blind Man – Sahih Bukhari

Narrated Abu Huraira, that he heard Rasulullah sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam saying:

Allah willed to test three who were a leper, a blind man and a bald-headed man.

So, he sent them an angel who came to the leper and said, “What thing do you like most?” He replied, “Good color and good skin, for the people have a strong aversion to me.” The angel touched him and his illness was cured, and he was given a good color and beautiful skin. The angel asked him, “What kind of property do you like best?” He replied, “Camels (or cows).” (The narrator is in doubt, for either the leper or the bald-headed man demanded camels and the other demanded cows.) So he (i.e. the leper) was given a pregnant she-camel, and the angel said (to him), “May Allah bless you in it.”

The angel then went to the bald-headed man and said, “What thing do you like most?” He said, “I like good hair and wish to be cured of this disease, for the people feel repulsion for me.” The angel touched him and his illness was cured, and he was given good hair. The angel asked (him), “What kind of property do you like best?” He replied, “Cows.” The angel gave him a pregnant cow and said, “May Allah bless you in it.”

The angel went to the blind man and asked, ‘What thing do you like best?’ He said, “(I like) that Allah may restore my eye-sight to me so that I may see the people.” The angel touched his eyes and Allah gave him back his eye-sight. The angel asked him, “What kind of property do you like best?” He replied, “Sheep.” The angel gave him a pregnant sheep.

Afterwards, all the three pregnant animals gave birth to young ones, and multiplied and brought forth so much that one of the (three) men had a herd of camels filling a valley, and one had a herd of cows filling a valley, and one had a flock of sheep filling a valley.

Then the angel, disguised in the shape and appearance of a leper, went to the leper and said, “I am a poor man, who has lost all means of livelihood while on a journey. So none will satisfy my need except Allah and then you.
In the Name of Him Who has given you such nice color and beautiful skin, and so much property, I ask you to give me a camel so that I may reach my destination.” The man replied, “I have many obligations (so I cannot give you).” The angel said, “I think I know you; were you not a leper to whom the people had a strong aversion? Weren’t you a poor man, and then Allah gave you (all this property)?” He replied, “(This is all wrong), I got this property through inheritance from my fore-fathers.” The angel said, “If you are telling a lie, then let Allah make you as you were before.”

Then the angel, disguised in the shape and appearance of a bald man, went to the bald man
and said to him the same as he told the first one, and he too answered the same as the first one did. The angel said, “If you are telling a lie, then let Allah make you as you were before.”

The angel, disguised in the shape of a blind man, went to the blind man and said, “I am a poor man and a traveler, whose means of livelihood have been exhausted while on a journey. I have nobody to help me except Allah, and after Him, you yourself. I ask you in the Name of Him Who has given you back your eye-sight to give me a sheep, so that with its help, I may complete my journey.”

The man said, “No doubt, I was blind and Allah gave me back my eye-sight; I was poor and Allah made me rich; so take anything you wish from my property. By Allah, I will not stop you for taking anything (you need) of my property which you may take for Allah’s sake.”

The angel replied, “Keep your property with you. You (i.e., the three men) have been tested and Allah is pleased with you and is angry with your two companions.”
