S$189,000 collected to kick-start STTA Sports Fund for winning table tennis team
SINGAPORE: Singapore's women paddlers made history by winning the World Team Table Tennis Championships in Moscow last month beating the world's top ranked team China.
On Saturday, they went on a victory parade to share their joy with the nation.
Feng Tian Wei proudly displayed the trophy she and the team won in Moscow, receiving loud cheers from residents in Yishun.
Also joining the party was Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean.
Soon they were aboard a double-decker bus to drive around Singapore with the silverware.
Stops included the National Library and Orchard Road.
For many fans, it was a great chance to get close to their idols who are aiming for greater glory.
Lee Bee Wah, president, Singapore Table Tennis Association, said: "I will definitely assure Singaporeans that we will continue to work hard and we hope to bring more glory to Singapore."
And to push for that glory, the association has set up a Sports Fund looking into areas like financial and medical help, and even retirement plans.
Sponsors have contributed S$189,000 to kick-start the fund which is expected to grow.
More money could come from the sale of 20,000 limited edition 'Champions' NETS FlashPay cards featuring the five team members.
Each card costs S$18, and S$8 from that goes towards the fund.
While the players can celebrate now, a tough year awaits them.
Among the major competitions are the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, where the Chinese team are definitely looking at avenging their world championship defeat.
