There are 2 issues:
1. Having an illicit affair which may compromise his position in terms of the knowledge he may have or granting inappropriate favours to the mistress and her friends. Raises the issue of potential corruption.
2. Having an illicit affair with someone considered lower in the hierachy like a subordinate, intern or member of the staff. Raises the issue of potential abuse of authority.
If Michael Palmer had an affair with a top corporate lawyer who would have no potential or forseeable need to use his position in any way, it wouldn't be a serious problem in my view.
that's not part of your job, that's his job, don't try to steal his thunder otherwise his post count will reduce by half..............
Oh ok, don't really need but then again who knows? He may be invited to one of the gatherings!
good points..
so shdnt CPIB investigate Michael Palmer for potential corruption as there is a likelihood of conflict of interest? Shdnt LHL make an example of MP so as to deter other PAP MPs?
The issue with Palmer's case is more likely to be number 2 and not number 1.
bro,
Sam got show his face meh?

sorry..dont understand your point
Actually, I am referring to the topic of "Laura Ong Is the Villian!"'
Back in the day of JFK, the affairs will likely be with "mute" women. There are hardly any "equals" (eg in the corrider of power) but there is a possibility of security compromises because in those Cold War days, the women involved could be used by other men as spies. (007)
But what you said are valid points.
Problem with Palmer's case which caused him to resign is that there is a potential abuse of authority in him having an illicit affair with a PA staff, who is supposed to be assisting and helping him, i.e. someone lower in the hierachy, almost like a subordinate or staff member. Hence issue number 2.
There is no evidence that she or he missued his position in any way to grant her favours. Which is issue number 1.

Well, other than the sms which claimed that she loved him loads and she bought him mangoes, Laura has been practically mute too. Hardly considered an equal. If she is a villian for having knowingly had an affair with a married man, yes. But what does that make Palmer?
That is why I have little sympathy for Laura, but no sympathy for Palmer.
ahhh...ok..thanks
but CPIB wont know whether he abused his position to get sex from Laura until they investigate...and things happen so recently, so it may warrant an investigation shd CPIB not done it yet
It's already quite clear that it was a willing party relationship, so there is really no issue of Palmer abusing his position to get sex from an unwilling Laura.
But because they had almost a boss-subordinate or at least a greater power-lesser power status, the affair was inappropriate and could be seen to be a potential abuse of authority, not that there actually was.
Illegal - no. Inappropriate - yes.
Abuse of authority in fact - probably not. Abuse of authority in appearance - probably.
Laura is certainly not the villain..but the PAP, PA and SG media are trying to portray her as the villain so as to divert the attention from Michael.
I hope Laura stands up, speaks up and fights against it.
Let Palmer be seen as what he is.
Singapore is too small and connected for her to go public.
But then again, she is already publicly known, and if she can take the pressures and dirty tricks from PAP, she should be heard. Her wrongs are similar to that experienced by Singaporeans at large.
she will be speaking on what Singaporeans are thinking!
