Khaw doesn’t want transport portfolio due to pressure

Housing Minister Khaw Boon Wan was asked by a reporter from the Chinese press
whether he would be interested in taking over the Transport Minister’s job since
Lui Tuck Yew has resigned. Mr Khaw was reported to have given an amusing reply,
implying no.
During the last election, housing was a hot potato issue and Minister Khaw
had gamely volunteered to take over the National Development Ministry from a
beleaguered Mah Bow Tan.
Mr Khaw told the reporter that after more than 4 years, the housing market
has cooled and supply and demand are more evenly balanced now.
“2 years ago, home prices reached their peak and started to drop. Trust me,
I’m one of those who heaved a huge sigh of relief,” he said.
He revealed that during those years, whenever he felt the pressure of dealing
with housing issues, he would take a stroll in Sembawang Park with his wife to
relieve tension.
Transport Minister Lui recently announced that he was quitting politics. He
would not only be relinquishing his ministerial position, but he would also not
contest the upcoming general election. In recent years, transport problems have
become almost intractable. The reporter asked Mr Khaw if he would be
volunteering for the transport portfolio this time round?
Mr Khaw did not answer directly. Instead he said:
poisoned chalice, so much so that he doesn’t want to touch it with a 10-foot
pole. This time, our heroic Minister Khaw is not going to rise to the
challenge.
Did Khaw Boon Wan drop his guard?
Indeed, housing issues may have taken a toll on Mr Khaw, causing him to be
“careless”.
The Auditor-General’s Office recently accused the Chairman of Admiralty CCC –
which falls under Mr Khaw’s GRC – of acting in breach of PA procedures by
approving his own claims and failing to declare his own interest in a company
that had won contracts from the CCC.
Also, HDB, a statutory board supervised by Mr Khaw, had awarded land reserved
for religious purposes to a private company intending to use it for profit.
So, it appears that despite our ministers drawing millions of dollars in
salary, they are only limited human beings just like the rest of us after
all.

I’ve already been to Sembawang Park many times. I can’t be camping there the
whole day.
Minister Khaw must have sensed that the Transport Minister’s job is a whole day.
