That is, on the assumption that the astute closet politicians will move in at that time.

But what if they may want to move in but because of the potential turmoil and current dominance, martial law is declared, dissidents arrested and a dictatorship is formed?

And for the sake of argument, lets assume that they are allowed to move in. Then what makes it apparent that voters will start to vote against the PAP at that time? In periods of turmoil, voters will play it even more safe.

And to carry the argument even further, lets assume the PAP split into two. Here, the crystal ball becomes hazy where PAP's future is concerned. But the opposition's future in such a scenario is quite clear. A PAP's offshoot can play the role of opposition far more effectively.

A famous economist (i think it is Lord Keynes) once said, "In the long run, we will all be dead".
