Having lived in Toa Payoh Lorong 8 (which is under Potong Pasir SMC) in the 80s and 90s, I give Chiam See Tong lots of credit for defeating PAP in 6 straight elections including two against the descipable Mah Bow Tan.

Beating PAP in those days was incredibly tough, PAP used public moneys and public services to "bribe" and threaten PP voters. I remember in one election, a PAP member approach my grandma and me. He pointed to the recently upgraded flats across the road in Lorong 7 and said vote for PAP and you can receive upgrading, but if PAP don't win, you cannot get upgrading so he urge my grandma to "advise" her neighbours to vote PAP.

Ashame to say that while my parents voted opposition, my grandparents voted PAP simply for the upgrading.

Malay vote very important for Chiam See Tong to wi 6 GE. Without Malay vote Lina Chiam lose Potong Babi Town Council

I can't vote as I believe he is both

a)In his 27yrs as MP, he contribute a lot. I respect him a lot
c)For 27 yrs, he cant even gloom a sucessor. He is a failure

He is a respectable no doubt but seems to be over cautious on the people around him

CST fails to plan for the continuity of his political party.

I respect him as an Opposition Leader and his bravery in standing up to MIW.
But he is still not able to form a credible team around him to mount a serious challenge to MIW.
He is not able to grow his party, not able to grow out of himself.
When he is gone, for sure his party will be gone.

while he is respected for standing up against PAP, I do not respect him for his style of managment which is no different from LKY. He made it worse when he involves his wife which leads to the ruin of the party.

It is a mistake that one should think that he should even grow a successor. Why should the opposition be like the Sith from Star Wars when one student to each master. This will only lead to extinction as in the case of SPP.

CST's style of managment is certainly his undoing. How many times has his party been broken? Shouldn't he realise by now that he is the problem?

me concur with your sentiment. true democracy allows the evolution of the society in the direction in which they want to grow.

the political parties should entrench themselves in the various ideology that drives their behavior, and the public should be able to choose freely amongst them.

as various group exists, may the actual representation of the electorate be reflected accordingly in the Parliament :):):)

Fucking retard. Mah Bow Tan stood ONLY once in 1984. Kenneth Chen stood once in 1988. Andy Gan stood twice in 1991 and 1997. Sitoh Yih Pin stood three times in 2001, 2006 and finally beat that stupid bimbo in 2011.

My bad, I forgot that Mah Bow Tan chickened out of avenging his defeat in Potong Pasir. Smart of him to get out as he would have lost again. Forgot about this Kenneth Chen, all these PAP losers to Chiam See Tong in Potong Pasir look the same to me, like some sacrificial lamb chosen by PAP management.

Can't really vote since it is quite obvious he is a person deserving enormous respect for having served 27 years and he is also equally a failure for in terms of being a true nurturer and mentor to younger politicians - both SDP and SPP.

Let's focus on his years of service instead. After all, what will be, will be.

i would say he is pretty successful other than 1 aspect -- nurturing a successor

Got a funny feeling that anyone else could have won.

While I respect him for his perserverence and determination ....the many times that the party are broken shows inherent flaws in his mgmt....unfortunately, this limit his party progress and also derail spore path towards multi party, robust democracy....

Kenneth Chen, if I am not wrong, elected through walkover in Hong Kah GRC during GE 1991 and 1997
