French police have arrested a 16-year-old boy claiming he 'wanted to die as a martyr' at the upcoming Paris Olympic Games, local media has confirmed.
The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office (Pnat) began an investigation on Tuesday following the arrest, with the young boy making threatening statements on social media. The teenager expressed a will to make an explosive belt in order to die as a martyr, with his posts being shared on networking site Telegram.
His alleged intention was to "Die as a martyr in the name of the Islamic caliphate." After the home was searched a cell phone and various handwritten documents were recovered with an apparent declaration of allegiance to Daesh, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
The teenager was arrested in Marignier, Haute-Savoie, at his parental home. It's a region in the Alps of eastern France, approximately 600 kilometers from Paris where the Olympics will begin on July 26.
